This is the third time students from St Aidan’s have won the International Award, which puts high school students alongside and in the shoes of aerospace industry engineers. St Aidan’s involvement highlights the importance the school places on science.

Teams from North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, the UK and Latin America are grouped into four teams ´FRPSDQLHVµRIWRFRPSHWHLQWKHannual competition at NASA Johnson Space Center.

Our girls worked with students from Sheldon College Brisbane, Romania, Wales and Colorado.

Supervising teacher, Mr Tim Kemp, said it was an intense competition and an experience the students would remember for a lifetime.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity – they are WKURZQWRJHWKHUDQGKDYHKRXUVWRFRPHXSZLWKDSDJHSURSRVDORQKRZWRGHVLJQDÁRDWLQJVHWWOHPHQWin the clouds above Venus in the year µ0U.HPSVDLG

“Students have to work out how the station would be constructed, how DQGZKDWWKH\ZRXOGIHHGWKHSHUPDQHQWDQGWUDQVLHQWUHVLGHQWVand how they would deal with waste, energy and power. This included coming XSZLWKVSHFLÀFDWLRQVIRUWKHURERWVneeded to serve the colony.”

Student engineers must demonstrate creativity, technical competence, management skills, space environment knowledge, teamwork, and presentation techniques to conquer the problems inherent in siting and designing a Space Colony.

Sarah Krause headed up one of her company’s four sections – business and ÀQDQFH²DQGWKHWHDPKDGDFFHVVWRa senior Boeing employee and Winston Churchill’s great grandson to help them SUHSDUHIRUDPLQXWHSUHVHQWDWLRQWRan expert NASA team of judges.

The St Aidan’s girls wore their medals on arrival home at Brisbane airport, and were amused to be mistaken for returning Olympians.

Share your generosityWhile many people consider donating parcels of shares in their wills, living share donations allow donors to take advantage of tax benefits.

“You might have a parcel of shares that you don’t want or aren’t attached to. The Foundation has a Perpetuity Fund under management, consisting of listed shares and cash, that provides funds to support future projects and scholarships,” said Foundation director Don Chandler.

´7KHVKDUHPDUNHWRIIHUVDÁH[LEOHDVVHWFODVVto the Foundation for our Perpetuity Fund. This provides a conservative savings plan with a high dividend yield and the prospect of capital gains over the medium to long term.”

Former St Aidan’s Foundation director, stockbroker Chris Burrell, helped set up this fund to ensure the Foundation had a longer-term capital account to provide for the future. He continues to administer the fund on the Foundation’s behalf.

Donations of artwork, shares and even luxury accommodation over the years have all helped enrich and enhance the school environment.

“There are many ways that Old Girls, parents and former parents are able to give back to the school,” according to Foundation chairman Tony Markwell.

“Financial contributions large and small are always welcome, but many families who are not in a position to donate ÀQDQFLDOO\PD\EHDEOHWRRIIHUVKDUHVworks of art or even the use of beach houses, boats or any desirable item that could be auctioned,” he said.

“We are also always interested in GRQDWHGSUL]HVWRUDIÁHDWVFKRROfunctions and donated catering.”

A number of St Aidan’s alumni and supporters have already chosen to donate to the school in meaningful ways that do not involve cash.

One generous couple is artist and Old *LUOWKHODWH-R\5RJJHQNDPSand her husband Ross McCowan.

The couple have donated six paintings that grace the school.

Principal Karen Spiller acknowledged the school’s Roggenkamp collection as a valuable body of work.

Donating a work of art recognises the talents of the artist – in Joy’s case actually nurtured at St Aidan’s – and ensures the work is permanently cared for, as well as inspiring the next generation of artists, Mr McCowan said.

AidArena is an innovative online auction service developed by former St Aidan’s Foundation director, Mark Wilson, to provide registered charities with an exciting new fundraising avenue.

The St Aidan’s Foundation has had tremendous fundraising success through the site, raising PRUHWKDQIRUWKH)RXQGDWLRQRYHUWKHSDVWPRQWKVWKURXJKWKHDXFWLRQRIDEHDFKSHQWKRXVHKROLGD\DQL3DGDQGDFXVWRPPDGHsofa to name a few.

Mr Wilson said the sky was the limit in terms of fundraising potential through AidArena.

“The motivation for setting up AidArena was to assist a wide variety of charities in challenging HFRQRPLFWLPHVDQGKHOSÀOOWKHGRQDWLRQshortfall by utilising goods and services rather than seeking cash.

“As a director on the St Aidan’s Foundation board, I saw the potential for AidArena to help the Foundation raise much needed funds from alternative channels.”

Mr Wilson encouraged parents and friends of St Aidan’s to register with AidArena and both donate auction items and start bidding.

“People can donate things like household items, electrical goods, sports equipment and even professional expertise and services.”

Visit www.aidarena.com and register, then visit the St Aidan’s Foundation page under ‘Charities’.
