Steve Kidd - President

President’s Corner

In last month’s issue of Kassette I discussed in detail our proposed bylaw change and the upcoming election. This month I’ll be brief and direct on those topics…..please vote. It is important that the membership express their views since the proposed bylaw revision will dictate how future elections are run and bring technology to this process. When

we know the results of the proposed bylaw change we will let the membership know….and it is very possible that our next election could have the electronic voting option. August is traditionally one of the slowest months with GCR activity. However, what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality with a fabulous Pot Luck get-together hosted by Ed and Beena Kohly. Everyone brought food and beverage to share which resulted in a spectacular spread. This event also allowed members who pre-registered to pick up their custom name badge…courtesy of Gold Coast Region. New members were welcomed and made to feel right at home which generated excitement about participating in future activities such as autocross and drivers education.

As we move into the 4th and final quarter of 2012, please check the website and Kassette calendar for the great activities we have planned, including but not limited to the Collier Museum tour, the Mandarin concours/social and our holiday party. We also have 2 autocrosses and 2 days of driver education at Sebring. Stay tuned for additional activities that are in the planning stages and will most likely be first announced thru our e-mail blast notifications.

As we turn the corner to 2013, and celebrate our 50th birthday, one of the premier events will be Zonefest. If you have never heard of Zonefest . . . then here’s the scoop. Once a year all the PCA regions in Florida (Zone 12) get together for a huge multi-region event filled with competitive activities such as Concours, Autocross, Rally and Tech Quiz, as well as banquets, partying and enjoying our Porsches. Every year the event moves to a different part of the state with a different host region and is traditionally held over the Memorial Day weekend. For 2013 Gold Coast is hosting the event at the Chateau Élan in Sebring Florida, adjacent to the world famous Sebring Racetrack, from May 24 to 27. This promises to be BIG . . . with attendees from all over Florida as well as a PCA National level presence.

Here’s a brief overview of the schedule….but we need some help. If you own a business or would just like to contribute, we have all sorts of opportunities for your assistance. Please see the partial list below and feel free to contact Steve/ Dottie Kidd, Zonefest 2013 co-chairs at (954) 946-3196 for a complete listing of the sponsor packages. We are also looking for door prizes such as tire sets, gift certificates for service work as well as items to stuff our goodie bags . The Master, Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsor packages are designed to be win-win and offer the contributor an avenue to new customers and business.

Until next month, drive safe and enjoy your Porsche.

Concours Corner: Leather

Leather is one of the strongest fibers that exist. It is flexible and durable, and has hundreds of uses, from shoes, clothing, furniture and, yes, even car seats. When kept up properly, leather can give you

years and even decades of service. A high percentage of Porsches produced today, and in the past, come with leather, or partial leather seating. I thought it would be an interesting topic to have a look at some of the aspects of this material. Understanding how it is produced may help us to safeguard and preserve the beauty and elegance of our magnificently crafted seats, and will definitely help us in Concours, not to mention in resale values. In this issue we will discuss the general topic of leather, rather than how to preserve and clean it. Thanks, Joanne Price of Color-Plus, for providing so much of the research and information below. In a later issue we will discuss the preservation and care.

So what is leather? Simply put, leather is animal skin, treated to stop decomposition, soaked, rolled, dried, oiled, stretched, split, dyed, softened and colored. I know that’s a mouthfull. The skins, dyed to the desired color, are split by machine into several layers of thickness. “Top Grain” is so called because it is the original surface, or first layer. “Split Grain” or “flesh splits” are the subsequent layers. These other layers are resurfaced through various means of

e m b o s s i n g and finishing, and made to resemble the original pattern, or sometimes even to imitate the grain pattern of other animals. The thicker “top grain” leathers are used for u p h o l s t e r y , p a r t i c u l a r l y automobiles, while the thinner leathers are used for furniture and apparel where a softer material is preferred.

The fiber structure of leather is omni directional, which means that it has no particular direction or pattern. It will stretch in all directions with no obvious grain pattern or stress. The surface coating, however, does not withstand this much abuse, and when it is stretched or stressed continuously in the same spot, the surface coating develops minute cracks not yet visible to the naked eye. Over time, however, this repeated flexing and stretching eventually causes the color surface coating to chip away in certain areas. Eventually, the natural leather color beneath becomes visible. Even though it may appear as a crack, it is not a crack, but merely the absence of the surface colorant running in a patterned direction known as “wear creases”. The darker colors usually show the light color of the natural leather beneath easier than the lighter colors; but in either case, here is where the danger lies. This loss of resistant

color coating protection exposes the leather and attracts dirt, oils, and other matter, which eventually can have negative affects on the leather.

In this country we have developed and use polymer coatings for leather, which help keep the leather soft, making it less brittle, and enhancing the ability to wear extremely well. Most of the leather produced in the United States is for furniture and wearing apparel, but the polymer coatings are extremely useful when durability and wear are important. Here again, even with these coatings the leather beneath will eventually dry out if

not treated and conditioned periodically.8 Die Porsche Kassette | October 2012

There are many types of leather sources, but cattle remain the most common for our purposes. America is cattle country, while Europe is not. In the United States there are millions of head of cattle roaming the open plains. These cattle are exposed to rain, dead heat of the summer sun, freezing winds of winter; exposed to every natural element, and some not so natural. This causes them to have thicker hides. Exposed to barbwire, shrubs, brush, insect bites, gored with cattle horns, American leather is tougher, and has what is called “characteristic markings” or scars.

European cows are pampered, as farmers have much less grazing land and consequently fewer head of cattle. Often these cows are kept in sheltered barns during inclement weather and at night, which results in thinner, finer hides and unblemished in comparison. European leather is finer in quality and not as desirable as American leather for automotive uses. They are good for purses and other apparel.

Knowing about the process of producing and coloring leather gives us a better

understanding about preserving it, and some of the reasons for its deterioration.Preserving our leather seats is a fairly simple matter and requires no special

abilities. In the next issue we can look at some of the many ways to preserve and keep our leather supple.

It is hard to think we are going into the winter months when the temperature gauge reads in the 90’s. I should be used to our seasons having lived in south Florida since the mid 1950’s but I guess that is part of living in a tropical paradise.

Our social team has been very busy planning the winter schedule to help us transition

from the summer months. We are returning to our very popular Halloween Party that presented us with a variety of characters at last years event at the Briny Pub. The event location has been moved south so please book early and don’t miss the fun. It has been many years but this year we will be celebrating Oktoberfest with the American German Club in Lake Worth. Be sure to bring your Porsche so it can also celebrate the event.

I hope you registered early for the Collier Museum Drive and Tour. The event sold out early as is always the case. If you were unable to book in time or if you have never gone before, make your calendar for two years from now and look for first notice of the event. We are very lucky to gain admission to this world class private collection of cars with documented race history every

other year. We thank Niles Collier owner and Gold Coast member for sharing his collection with fellow members. Please do not bring a camera because photos inside the museum are prohibited.

Another charity event that GCR attends each year is the Compassionate Friends Car and Truck Show in Boca Raton. Come out and support a great cause and enjoy the car display with a chance to win some nice gift packages with all proceeds going to charity.

We had a well attended Pot Luck Social at the Kohly’s last month. The turn out of new members was the best I have ever seen. Our socials are a great way for new members to learn about all of the activities available to PCA members. The selection of food was outstanding. Thanks to Ed and Beena for opening your home to the members.

We are not all about socials, we also have an Autocross planned for the end of the month. If you are new to track events, this is the starting point. We have a great track, excellent instructors, and many runs to help you learn about your car as you develop your driving skills.Hope to see you at the next event, Roger

members who made them feel welcomed and hopefully we will see them at many more events to come.

In summary, it was a great evening! Old friends, new friends, good food, great wine and lots of Porscheizing. See you next time.

Beena

Despite the afternoon downpours, we had a lot of people who braved the weather and attended our Annual Potluck Social with 91 who RSPV’d and 80 showed up!! Not a bad turnout given the monsoon-like conditions. Typical afternoon rain showers for August we should have expected it.

If you wanted to see team work and a group of people who wanted this event to be a successful one, you should have see the number of members with towels and rags drying off the tables and chairs after the rain!!! Thanks to all of you for your collaborated efforts.

We wanted to entertain both inside and outside so we stationed all the food inside of the house and all the drinks on the patio. That worked out well, since it allowed people to utilize all the space available.

We had a wide array of dishes and drinks to enjoy and the tables were never bare. There was a constant flow of food and drinks throughout the evening. Thanks to everyone, I mean absolutely everyone because no one walked in without a dish, a drink or a miscellaneous item. This was indeed a very successful potluck.

There were at least 15 new members who came by and hung out with us. We could not be happier that you chose this event to be your first. Thanks also to the seasoned

I now live in south Florida and have worked in the pleasure boat marine industry since 1985 in construction management, service and repairs, marine surveying and consulting. I have been self employed in that

industry for the last 20 years.Michael became involved with Porsche Club Gold Coast Region almost 20 years ago with the purchase of a 1981 911 SC Targa. At that time he became involved with the Gold Coast Region’s socials, autocross and driver’s Ed programs.

I am currently the Gold Coast Region Vice President and the Driver’s Ed Chairman. I have been the Driver’s Ed Chairman since 2007 and have seen the implementation of night driving events, combined events with other clubs, and have focused on financial efficiency in the DE program, helped to promote expanded passing rules allowing passing in the corners for advanced drivers. I have served Gold Coast as Vice President for three years.

Michael Grant

Ed KohlyI have been a member of PCA Gold Coast Region since 2009, but have been involved with Porsches for a very long time. I am currently on the Board of Directors for Gold Coast Region, hold the Membership Chair position, and I am also on the 2013 Zonefest committee. In 2010, my wife and I won the GCR Rookie of the Year award.

I have found many ways to get more involved with the club helping wherever I am needed. I help my wife Beena (Broward Social Chair) with all of her events such as Collier Museum, Key Largo Brunch and the annual picnic. I also volunteered the last few years at the 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race.

This year, I initiated the idea to make and distribute new GCR name badges for all of our members. Our first batch of badges at this year’s spring fling annual picnic was a huge success.

Last year, I launched the Gold Coast Region Facebook page and helped our Webmaster improve our website. In addition my

company, Peak 10, provides the server so our website can continue to grow and improve.

My interests are all Porsche activities and I love playing in poker tournaments. Being part of this organization has been very rewarding and I have made great friends along the way.

Dottie Kidd - Incumbent TreasurerMany of our members know me as the GCR Autocross Registrar from 2003 to 2011, as a Board Member 2010 and 2011, and most recently as GCR Treasurer for 2012. In the past my husband Steve and I were honored to receive GCR’s Family of the Year and Enthusiasts awards.

I have been actively involved with Gold Coast Region over the past nine years and am always willing to jump in and help wherever needed. I recently retired from the US Postal Service as a letter carrier for fifteen years, and prior to that was Bookkeeper/Office Manager for several private employers and a single mom with two kids. That background has been an asset to my duties as Treasurer which I take very seriously. I have also been actively involved as a volunteer and member of Compassionate Friends, a grief support group for parents whose children have passed.

You can find me at most events driving my blue 944S2 (unless I can sneak out with Steve’s GT3). I love participating in local events, as well as National and Regional events such as Parade and Zonefest. Besides everything Porsche, I enjoy our Tennessee mountain cabin, retirement, and my granddaughter Riley.

That got me into Karting, Off Road Bikes, Rally and Race Cars of all types, eventually winning multiple National Championships in Karts (’73 & ’74) and Enduro (’82 & ’84) in my native Dominican Republic.

I’ve been very involved with my passion: Porsche automobiles for the past 30+ years and I have been Author, Developer and Innovator of multiple modifications and upgrades for Porsche models such as the 986, 987, 996, 997, C7 and more. I now own a 986, which is my daily driver and track car, which I maintain and modify myself. It just finished the break-in period, as it turned 220,000 miles. In the past I’ve also owned various other Porsche vehicles, such as a 912, 914, 914/6 and a 932.Aside from participating regularly in PCA DEs and AXs, I get invited to many National Porsche Gatherings, such as the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit (BRBS), held every year in the Blue Ridge Mountains to participate as a Trainer, Guest Speaker and Presenter, as well as Instructing Tech Sessions. I’ve also done the same at the BoxstoberFest Event in the Texas Hill Country, at the West Coast BoxsterFest (WCBF) held in Lake Tahoe and for other groups such as Tri-County Boxster Lovers (TCBL), etc.My undergraduate studies were in Mechanical and Civil Engineering and later I received a Master’s Degree in Business Management. After leaving the corporate world, I founded PedrosGarage.com in 2004, a firm dedicated to the Porsche marque and it’s owners. I’ve been a member of PCA since 1998 first joining the Club in St.

Louis, MO where I lived at the time and then moving to Florida in 1999 and joining Gold Coast Region.I’ve been very involved with GCR for the past five years, not only actively participating in the AX Championship, where I was fortunate enough to win Class Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010, but also in the DE program, where I am proud to serve as a Nationally Certified Instructor. For the last three years I have also been the Tech Article writer for our Newsletter: “Die Porsche Kassette”, as well as for three dozen more PCA Regional Newsletters. I was also elected to serve as an Alternate Member of the GCR Board of Directors in 2010 and as GCR Board Member in 2011 and 2012.I live in Weston with my wife Mary. We have two sons, one daughter and two grandkids (both of whom are already Porsche fanatics).Happy Porscheing,Pedro

Sergio I. de Araujo On August 1, 2011 with my son and partner Andrew we launched AnSer Latin American Opportunities Fund, LP., a new venture. implementing various client relationship initiatives. In addition, I was a portfolio manager responsible for investing individual client assets. Over the years I held other senior management positions in both international and domestic private client asset management including working for the Rothschild family. I spent thirteen years with Citigroup in Asia, Europe and New York where I was one of the founders (in 1971) of the International Private Banking Division and was associated with its growth and development until 1981. Richard Diaz - Incumbent Alternate DirectorMy love affair for Porsches started 28 years ago with a Red 911. I currently drive a yellow Boxster S that I ordered from the factory. In 2006, I joined GCR and began driving at the Autocross events, which led to driving at DE events, where the “Hook” was set! My participation at DE events became almost an addiction and made many good friends amongst the

drivers. The natural development of a driver led to becoming a PCA National Driving Instructor, which I found to be very rewarding. Passing on what I have learned from others is more enjoyable than simply participating. My wife, Cynthia is the Miami Social Chair and Secretary of GCR, in which I help her with the social events. If you have been to the Mandarin Luncheon & Concours, you will have seen me coordinating the placement of the cars. I have led the caravans to the 12 Hours of Sebring, helped at the PCA hospitality tent at the 24 hours of Daytona. Awarded Family of the year in 2008. Have submitted articles and photos for the Kassette, a few photos have become cover shots. A new challenge is to help in the charity drive to raise money for the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Research in Weston.

I have been in the automotive industry for 25 years and currently the Parts manager at Audi Coral Springs and Lighthouse Point. I am an avid motorsport fan and Porsche Nut. I have been active on the board for about five years. I would like to see the club continue to grow and offer members quality events that are rivaled by none! Remember, Porsche, there is no substitute!

Dan Doyle - Incumbent Alternate Director I purchased my first Porsche (Carrera) in 2007. I immediately joined Porsche Club of America and have been a member of the Gold Coast Region (Zone 12) for the past five years. I initially became involved in the Autocross Program and later the Driver’s Education Program. I then became a PCA Instructor. Teaching beginning drivers is fun, a challenge and

is also immensely gratifying. I enjoy giving back to the Porsche community as an instructor and have also been able to do so as a 2nd Alternate Board Member. Being a Board Member has given me an opportunity to interact in a different way with all of the great people I’ve met in GCR. I would like to continue my service as a Board Member in the upcoming year and would greatly appreciate your vote. Thank you for your consideration and, as always, I look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming PCA GCR events.

Alex OrtegaI have been a PCA member since the late 80's. It all started in New Jersey (NNJR) and now I am part of GCR. I have been actively involved with GCR especially in the Autocrosses and Driver's Education Program. I am a PCA Instructor and also just recently my family and I were honored with the award "Family of the Year." I am currently involved

in the 2013 Zonefest committee. I have been involved in regional and multi- regional events. I am truly a Porsche enthusiast. Ever since I can remember I have been in love with Porsches. I am running for a directors position in the upcoming election and I feel that by serving as a board director, it would be a way for me to give back to our members and our club.

I was born in New York, my parents moved to South Florida when I was nine years old. First joined Gold Coast Region in 1975 but only stayed as a member for 2 years, then rejoined in 1985. I graduated from North Miami Senior High, Miami Dade Jr. College (AA) and the University of Miami (BA). Attended first multi region Sonnenfest event in 1991.

Got my first car at 14 (illegal driving age) cars were definitely in my future, I paid my way thru college Drag Racing a 1969 Pontiac Ram Air GTO Judge for money at Miami Hollywood Speedway and Moroso Motorsports park. Purchased my first street Porsche at the age of 22 and have owned 34 Porsches since including 911S, 911SC, 930 Turbo, 911 Carrera, 944 Turbo, 944S, 964, 964 RS America, Boxster, Boxster S, Cayenne S, Cayman, Cayman S, 996C4S and I’m not done. I have owed Several Factory Porsche Racecars - 911 Carrera, 944 Turbo, 944S, 911 RS America, 993 Supercup, 996 GT3 Cup, Cayman S (Work in progress). I have been the Autocrosses D and Modified Class Champion, Twice Porsche Owners Club 996 GT3 Cup Race Champion and raced over 95 PCA Races.

I have held these Gold Coast Region Positions: Chief of Tech 1994 to present, President 95-96, Vice President 94, Board member 91,92,93,97 Family of the year and twice Enthusiasts of the year, PCA Club Race Committee 15 Years. I am a Porsche Factory Trained Master Technician, ASE Master Technician, 1 of 6 members of Porsche Cars North America After Market Council, received Broward County’s Emerald Award for Environmental Excellence and owner of Foreign Affairs Motorsports serving South Florida for over 30 Years. Foreign Affairs is the longest continuous sponsor of Gold Coast Region PCA.

48 Hours at Sebring - 201320th Anniversary

Thanks to you, this year will be the 20th Anniversary of the 48 Hours at Sebring. Through the support of our sponsors, drivers, volunteers and dedicated committee members, we have grown to be the premier Club Race that is envied by many regions across the country. Since this is a special year, we can feel the excitement building and are planning to provide an event better than ever before. Even though registration is not open as yet, check the '48 hours at sebring.com' web site for further details. The dates for this exciting extravaganza are January 31, 2013, through February 3, 2013. So, mark your calendar now and start planning. Because we expect a full roster, once registration opens, submitting your entry early will be critical in making the field. Now, if you are not a racer but want to participate in the fun, check out the Volunteer Tab at the '48 hours at sebring.com' web site for information on how you can be an active part of the team. Volunteers are most important and will be needed in a variety of the following areas: Corner Worker, Grid, Timing & Scoring, Pit Marshall, Tech & Scales, Goodies Store, misc runner and general gofer. Check the web site to see where you would like to help. It's exciting to be involved in the race and to be "in the trenches" with racers and cars. Again, keep checking the web site for the opening dates as positions will fill quickly. However, at this point, mark your calendar, plan your vacation and start getting the car ready. Remember, there is something magical about Sebring so come out and witness the eye-popping action and be a part of history. Check the '48 hours at sebring.com' web site frequently so you don't miss the fun.

Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Tech Corner: A Brighter Future

There’s a Brighter Future!

A little history first.

The very first headlights were introduced

in the early 1800s. Two common types

were oil and acetylene lamps with a

reflective mirror behind the flame and

they were used on carriages. The

acetylene type quickly became more

popular since they would stay lit in high

wind conditions.

The first electric headlight was

introduced in 1898 on the Columbia

Electric Car from the Electric Vehicle

Company. Peerless made electric headlights standard in

1908. Around 1910, the Corning Glass Co. introduced the

first lens-focused headlight.

When “High” and “Low” beams were first introduced,

it meant that the headlights were directed high or pointed

low, literally and their positions were changed manually.

In 1912 Cadillac integrated their vehicle’s Delco

electrical ignition and lighting system, creating the “modern”

automotive electrical system.

Osram introduced dual filament high/low beam

bulbs in 1924.

Between 1940 and 1983 sealed beam headlights

were used. When the bulb burned out the whole unit was

replaced. In 1983 composite headlights became available

in which only the bulb needed replacing when it burned

out.

The earlier electric bulbs used tungsten filaments

in a vacuum. These were not very efficient and soon gave

way to halogen lamps which use chlorine and iodine gas to

make the tungsten element burn brighter, also using less

energy.

In 1991, the BMW 7-series was the first car to

have HID or High Intensity Discharge headlights. HID, also

known as Xenon or Litronics in our Porsches, use light

bulbs filled with the inert gas xenon inside a high-quality

quartz or tungsten glass tube. Two tungsten electrodes arc

a powerful electric discharge which interacts with the gases

that surrounds them vaporizing the metal salts present in

the bulb, producing a plasma that emits very intense light.

In 2008, Lexus first introduced the next generation

in automotive lights, LEDs as headlights. LEDs had

already been in use as parking lights, turn signal, taillights

and daytime running lights on some vehicles for several

years. Light Emitting Diodes while currently expensive,

offer several advantages. They illuminate 200 times faster

than a comparable halogen bulb, and they are low heat

producers since they don’t heat up an element to produce

light. However, there is heat produced from the back of

the lamp which requires the use of complex and expensive

heat sinks. The main disadvantage of LED is seen in cold

weather, since LEDs will not melt ice or snow which has

accumulated on the headlight. They are also temperature-

sensitive, giving off different light levels depending on the

ambient temperature.

If your Porsche didn’t

come with Litronics (HID)

and you’d like to benefit

from the advantage of

having brighter roads

ahead, you can easily convert your headlights to Xenon

HIDs by installing a simple kit. HID bulbs come in the same

type base as your halogen bulbs therefore there’s no need

to modify the headlight itself.

30 Die Porsche Kassette | October 2012

Page 31: Oct. 2012 Kassette

Aside from the fact that you will get whiter

(daylight) and brighter light, there is a lot

less heat generated by the HID bulb which

wont burn or turn yellow the inside of your

headlight.

Below I installed an HID kit on the driver’s

side headlight (on your right) while leaving the

passenger side the original halogen bulb for

comparison.

You can see the difference in brightness

and color, but also notice the difference in

the temperature measured with a LASER

thermometer below.

Newer model Porsches also include LED DRL (Daytime

Running Lights) which make you more visible to traffic, and

have been shown to reduce accidents.

You can also add LED DRLs easily to your car with another

simple kit.

So, as you can plainly see, there can be a brighter future

ahead if you upgrade your halogen headlights and take

advantage of these new automotive lighting technologies:

HID and LED.

more, please visit my website at: www.PedrosGarage.com
