December 2018 OWQS Quarterly
Ocean Waves Quilt Society Quarterly Meeting December 1, 2018
Masonic Hall, 24 Queen Street, Baddeck
Program
The Fall quarterly and special general meeting of Ocean Waves Quilt Society was held September 29th, 2018 at the St. Mark’s Church Hall in Port Hawkesbury. The approximately 60 attendees were warmly welcomed by Colleen Dewolfe who had been designated by the Chair, Theresa MacLean, who could not be present.
Agenda: Colleen moved that the agenda be accepted as presented. Motion seconded by Mary MacDonald. Motion carried.
Minutes: Minutes of the last regular quarterly meeting held in June 2018 in Havre Boucher were read by Colleen Dewolfe. Since no further questions arose from the minutes, a motion that the minutes be approved as read was made by Colleen and seconded by Ginette Chiasson. Motion carried.
Business arising: The only thing on the list was the auditing of the books and the report will presented for discussion at Point 8 of the agenda.
Special resolution to amend the By-Laws: Ginette Chiasson explained that the By-Laws submitted for filing with the Registry of Joint Stock did not meet the requirements of the the Registry and were sent back to Donna Larade on August 15th be reworked. This was done meticulously after consultation by phone with the author of the letter from the Registry. Moved by Ginette Chiasson, seconded by Frances Aucoin: “That we adopt the Ocean Waves Quilt Society By-Laws as amended in September 2018 to include all information requested by the Registry of Joint Stock in letter addressed to Secretary, Donna Larade and dated August 15, 2018.” Motion carried by unanimous vote.
2019 AGM: The executive has determined that the 2019 AGM will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church hall in Sydney River on Sept. 28th and 29th of 2019. A turkey dinner will be served for our luncheon and we hope to have a special guest, show & tell, vendors, demos and workshops. We were reminded that we are looking at a possibility of up to four (4) different workshops taught by local teachers from Cape Breton & Eastern Nova Scotia. Interested Workshop instructors should be aware that we will require concise description of the workshop you wish to teach, including pictures of finished product, maximum number of students, kit availability and cost. Instructors are advised to send workshop proposal no later than October 31, 2018 to Chairperson at [email protected]
As we are talking about e-mail, Colleen mentions that in January 2019, she will be getting a new e-mail especially for Ocean Waves as using her personal mailbox for the Society’s business is getting to be an issue.
20th Anniversary in 2020: Anne Morrel was asked to give us a rundown on preparations. She tells us the event will be held at the same venue as our 2019 AGM (Our Lady of Fatima Church Hall in Sydney River) and the theme is to be “It’s Not All Black & White” Anne tells us about a challenge that would determine prize winners in three categories (Traditional, Contemporary and Wearable) who would then be eligible to participate in CQA “Viewers’ Choice” competition at the next annual meeting. Anne clarifies that there is no size restriction.
Auditors’ Financial Report: The report presented by Carolyn Langley and Nancy MacLennan was read and accepted as presented. A point regarding a grant in the amount of $500 involving Tea Thyme Quilters was mentioned and Barbara MacIntyre was asked to explain the project in question. We learned that way back in 2006, Tea Thyme Quilters made a request of Destination Cape Breton (made up of the Cape Breton Municipality, the Municipalities of the County of Inverness, Victoria and Richmond, as well as Port Hawkesbury for money to put together Quilting at the Causeway, a quilting show & tell event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canso Causeway.
The event has since become an annual event, with Destination Cape Breton contributing yearly due to Barbara’s hard work and diligence in preparing the funding request. A sincere thank you was extended to Barbara for her hard work on behalf of Tea Thyme Quilters and Ocean Waves Quilt Society.
Colleen feeling that she had to fill big shoes replacing our Chair, she asked if she could share something called lapkins to which she was introduced by friends. We all had a good laugh at “her” undies…
Ginette invites participants to take photos if they want and to please forward them to her so she may use them on our Web and Facebook pages as well as in the Newsletter.
Logo: Nothing has yet been decided by the executive, so this point is tabled until the next meeting.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Colleen Dewolfe tells us that after the June statement shows an amount of $3,677.07. She has since received $80 from 8 new members for a total of $3,757.07. Of that amount, $50 must disbursed to cover gifts for the June meeting ($3,707.07) and $45 remains to be deposited ($3,752.07).
Membership: Colleen tells us we now have a total of 145 members. Moved by Colleen, seconded by Carolyn Langley that the Treasurer/Membership report be accepted as presented. Motion carried.

Minutes of the September 2018 Quarterly!
Communications’ Report: Ginette presents her report, stating that since the last meeting, only one Newsletter was sent out in early September. She mentions that 11 newsletters are sent out by post, the remaining members getting theirs by e-mail in PDF form. As regards the Webpage, she mentions that although some updates (contact information, “About Us” and Newsletters tabs) has been done, she would like to reorganize the site to make searching it easier.
Ginette asks us to please check out the site and give her our suggestions and or corrections as needed. We are reminded to “like” the Facebook page in order to receive notifications of important events. We are invited to submit events and activities that might be of interest to our membership. Ginette was thanked for all her hard work. Moved by Ginette, seconded by Colleen that her report be accepted. Motion carried.
Special Projects: Carolyn Langley invites us to take part in a Christmas time charitable project. Her suggestion is that between now and the Christmas quarterly, we encourage our guilds to make Christmas stockings to be donated to seniors’ care facilities in our communities. She has checked with several seniors’ care facilities in her area and has been told that there are several seniors with no family who are unlikely to receive gifts at Christmas. Our stockings would be those gifts. She was told that personal care items (shampoo, soap, powder, etc.) are always in scarce supply and would be a welcome addition to the stocking. She knows that in some areas, there may be less seniors needing our stockings than our guild might be making but suggest that we might want to share with other communities who might not have enough.
Carolyn asks for volunteers in each guild to get in touch with their local seniors’ care facility and to bring the idea to their guild and then to report to her. We are happy to say that volunteers were eager to offer their help with the project. She asks that stockings be brought to the Christmas quarterly in Baddeck on Dec. 1st. Moved by Carolyn, seconded by Nancy that the Special Projects’ report be accepted as presented. Motion carried.
Christmas Quarterly meeting: The December quarterly meeting will be held in the Masonic Hall in Baddeck (behind the drug store on Queen Street). Details to follow in next newsletter.
Carolyn Langley moved to adjourn the meeting.
After a beautiful lunch prepared by Tea Thyme Ladies and some friends, Colleen presents our guest speaker, Julie Crouse, who comes to talk to us about a quilt she purchased in a thrift shop. Her talk takes us through several decades when the quilt gave her much needed support in her jobs working with mentally ill people until the time when she decides to have the quilt repaired by her mother, only to find something hidden in the quilt’s construction that sends her on a search to find the quilter. A reminder to all of us of the importance of labeling our work.
Colleen tells us that tomorrow’s workshop in Arichat could accept a few more participants if some are interested. Barb proceeds to draw the names of ticket holders who brought fat quarters for the swap. The winner of the Name Tag draw is Pat Sharpe.
Leslie Carruthers, aided by Vanna White (Barb MacIntyre but without the heels), demonstrated her wonderful “No Waste” Flying Geese method. They were helped by inventive demo boards and wonderful examples of the pattern which makes the absolute most of your scraps. Leslie had lovely hand-outs to give all of us. A warm thank you was extended to both ladies.
All through the day, a silent auction was going on with 25 lots of beautiful stacks of fabrics, patterns and kits! The items had been donated to St. Marks Church and it was believed that bringing it to the Society’s quarterly meeting would give it the best chance for profit, it was agreed that the money raised would be split among the Church, Tea Thyme Quilters and the OWQS. We raised $1,027 for the three organizations! Barb MacIntyre of Tea Thyme Quilters turned over $504 to OWQS’s treasurer, Colleen, for deposit in the Society’s account. The Church received $500 ($300 from the auction and $150 rental fee from OWQS) and the remaining $173 went to Tea Thyme Quilters, who meet at the Church, for their quilt show Quilting at the Causeway 2019.
We ended the day’s activities with thanks going out to the hostesses, Tea Thyme Quilters for the wonderful venue, the great welcome and the wonderful meal and finally with draws for the door prizes. The winners are:
Debbie Brennick Margie MacIsaac Judith Breene Helen Fougère Shirley Mason Marge Crosson Bea Tilsley Pearl Magee Sandra MacDonald Helena Hart Ruth Stevens Ann Marie Meagher Jean MacNeil Danièle Burloch Judy Castle
Vali Ross Ruth Innis Stella Warner Georgie Stewart Marilyn Gillis Libby MacDonald Clare Cameron Cheryl Mycroft Doreen Beaton Helen Poirier Lorna Bishop Sherille MacKeigan Betty MacMullin Anne Morrell Robinson Nancy MacLennan
May this festive season sparkle and
shine, may all of your wishes and
dreams come true, and may you feel
this happiness all year round.
Merry Christmas!

Remember the Christmas stocking for seniors project that Carolyn talked about at our Fall quarterly? These Stockings are destined for seniors in care facilities who are unlikely to receive gifts at Christmas; perhaps because they have no family or for other reasons.
The stockings you make should be ready by our next quarterly on December 1st so that we have time to fill them with small gifts and distribute them to the Senior Care Homes that need them.
If you have made one - or more - and can't make it to the quarterly in Baddeck, please send them along with someone who is going.
f you didn’t find the time to make one, we understand. Maybe you’d like to send along a stocking filler or two? Small gifts that seniors can enjoy: cards, books, crayons, socks, pretty scarves, costume jewellery, etc.
