About This Quilt: I designed this quilt to host a fun little quilt along here at Charming Chatter! I made two of the mini versions (41” x 41”), and one of the larger version (59” x 71”), and I love them all! We had a fun little naming contest with the sample version that I made, and our sweet bloggy friend Esther suggested that we name this cutie “Half-Pint”, after the nickname of little Laura Engals Wilder from Little House on the Prairie! Since the pieces are so small, and I loved that show when I was a little girl, the name fit perfectly! Thanks again to Esther!
Hope you all will enjoy making a little “Half-Pint” of your own!
41 medium/dark strips of fabric that are 2 1/4" x 20" long (you can cut these off of fat quarters from your stash or use jelly roll strips). This fabric will be used for the 9 patches, saw tooth border, and scrappy binding.
Note: I prefer a medium binding. If you prefer a wider binding, use 2 1/2" strips.
For the Lap Quilt, You'll Need:
4 1/4 Yards Background Fabric
48 medium/dark precut 10" squares You can cut these from fabric in your stash or use layer cakes. This fabric will be used for the 9 patches, saw tooth border, and scrappy binding.
Cutting Instructions for the Mini Quilt (41" x 41").
WOF = 44"
From Your Background Fabric (this is the white fabric in the sample), Cut:
1. Cut 4 strips 3 1/2" x WOF. Subcut into 3 1/2" squares. Cut a total of 40 squares. (for alternating blocks)
2. Cut 4 strips 1 7/8" x WOF. Subcut into 1 7/8" squares. Cut a total of 68 squares. (for sawtooth border)
3. Cut 6 strips 1 1/2" x WOF. Subcut into 1 1/2" squares. Cut a total of 164 squares.(for 9 patch blocks)
1. Gather all of your 11/2" squares (set the rest of your pieces aside).
2. For each strip you cut, you'll be making one 9 patch block. Place on background square and one medium/dark square RST (right sides together). Stitch three sets together:
3. Set aside the other two 1 1/2" medium/dark squares.
5. Stitch a medium/dark square to your background square on two of your segments, and stitch a background square to the medium background square of the remaining segment
6. Press seams toward the medium/dark, and stitch the three rows on the 9 patch together.
7. Make 41 of the 9 patch blocks. Blocks should measure 3 1/2".
1. Gather your background and medium/dark 1 7/8" triangles
2. Place one medium/dark triangle on one background triangle, RST (right sides together). Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance (I move my needle over one titch) stitch along the longest side of the triangles
5. For the Mini Half-Pint, make 132 blocks, and for the Lap Half-Pint, make 232 blocks.
For the Lap Sized Half-Pint:
1. Stitch the 27 1/2" x 3 1/2" strips to the sides of your quilt center.
2. Stitch the 33 1/2" x 3 1/2" strips to the top and bottom of your quilt center:
3. Gather your 1" HST's.
4. Lay them out with a total of 34 squares (17 facing to the right and 17 facing to the left) across the top and bottom, and 32 squares down (16 facing down and 16 facing up) each side.
2. You can use a straight seam to stitch all of the strips together.
3. Or, you can do a diagonal seam (which makes the piecing in the border less visible).
4. To make diagonal seams (the Kelly way), lay one strip of fabric so that the edge has the 45 degree angle line on your mat running through the middle of the end
5. Lay the next border strip on top of it, with your fabric facing right sides together (RST)
18. Lay them out with a total of 52 squares (26 facing to the right and 26 facing to the left) across the top and bottom, and 62 squares down (31 facing down and 31 facing up) each side. See photo above for layout.
19. Stitch the rows together, and stitch them to your quilt center.
20. Stitch one 3 1/2" x 65 1/2" strip to each side of the quilt.
21. Stitch one 3 1/2" x 59 1/2" strip to the top and to the bottom of your quilt.
And, you Half-Pint quilt top is finished! Whew – it was a lot of very small HST’s (in fact, I promised the Charming Girls I’d never do that to them again) – but, it does make for a really pretty little quilt – no?
Quilt as desired!
Piecing & Applying the Scrappy Binding
1. Gather your binding strips and stitch them together on the 2 1/4" ends.
4. Starting approximately half way down one side of the quilt, stitch the binding using a 1/4' seam, and leave a tail 8" to 10" long hanging (so you have room to work when you connect the binding at the end).
5. When you get to each corner, lay the binding above the corner, making a 45 degree angle
6. Pin corner, pin binding to side of quilt and stitch. Repeat as you work your way around the quilt. After you have finished the last corner, be sure to leave 6" to 8" unstitched, so you have room to work while attaching the two ends of your binding.
7. On my mini quilt, the binding matched up perfectly. On the lap size it needed to be trimmed. Lay the two ends of the binding over each other and clip at the 1/4" overlap as follows:
8. Stitch the two ends together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seam open, press binding in half, and stitch to quilt.
9. Fold the binding over the quilt edge, and stitch the binding to the back of the quilt, using small stitches:
