Page 4: OBJECTIVE:

“All people are equal as the teeth of a comb”

This quote can be found in the Hadith (a book containing the teachings of the prophet Muhammad).

What does this tell us about how the religion views men and women?

Islam teaches that men and women are equal and created by Allah.

Page 5: OBJECTIVE:

In Islam men and women are seen as having DIFFERENT

but EQUALLY important roles.

The Qur’an teaches that Allah made men STRONGER and

so they should protect women...who in turn are

required to have the children.

Equal BUT different…

Page 6: OBJECTIVE:

• 2. Men should provide for their wife and children.

• 3. Men should dress modestly in loose clothing from navel to knee

• 4. Men should go to the Mosque to pray.• 5. Men should worship separately to

women in the Mosque.

OUTCOMES…

Grade C

You will be able to interpret the picture clues to

identify the roles that men

and women have in Islam.

Did you achieve your GOAL…

Page 9: OBJECTIVE:

• “All people are equal as the teeth of a comb”

• Look at the lists you have written. Do you agree with this statement?

• Give at least one reason for your opinion at this stage.

First thoughts…

Page 10: OBJECTIVE:

The Qur’an teaches that BOTH men and women should dress modestly.

However a lot of people outside of Islam think that the rules on clothing are oppressive to women and too strict.

Do these rules stop men and women being equal?

Clothing…

What are the arguments for and against wearing the veil (hijab/Niqab/Burqa)?

Watch the following clip…

FOR AGAINSTMen are less likely to bother or harass you.You can control who sees your body and how much.It forces people to look beyond your physical appearance.

Gives women independence.

It shows people what you believe as a Muslim.

It’s unfair because men don’t have to wear it.Why should women suffer because men are too easily tempted? It’s not practical to wear it when doing certain jobs. You can’t express your personality if you are wearing it.

It might cause Islamophobic people to attack you.

Page 12: OBJECTIVE:

OUTCOMES…Grade B

You will be able to use information from the video clip to give at

least 2 arguments for and 2 against

Muslim women wearing a veil.

Did you achieveyour GOAL?…

Page 13: OBJECTIVE:

• “All people are equal as the teeth of a comb”

• Whether you agree or disagree, you need to be able to see both

sides of the argument.

Second thoughts…

Page 14: OBJECTIVE:

• Write out the quote from the previous slide and then underneath, in bullet points, write THREE reasons why in Islam this could be true and THREE reasons why other people might disagree.

• Use the work and notes you have done today to help you.

Second thoughts…

Page 15: OBJECTIVE:

Yes because...

- They have equal roles like working, getting married and starting a family, bringing up the children.

- Both men and women are also entitled to education and to work.

- Both men and women are expected to dress modestly.

No because...- Men are expected to provide for

and protect women.- Women should look after the

home and family.- Women have to cover up more

(Burqa/Hijab etc...)

Reflection…“All people are

equal as the teeth of a comb”

Add other ideas in green pen
