Dear parents and friends of the school, Mathematics Competition Congratulations to George Sandral and William Bott for achieving Credit awards in the NSW University Mathe- matics competition. Connor Arnold, Logan Kerr, Ellie Arnold, Gabrielle Sutcliffe and Riley Kerr achieved Proficiency Awards. These results are very pleasing as the standard is ex- tremely high. Local Government Week Congratulations also to Jasmine Bateman and George Sandral for winning prizes in the senior section of the Local Government Week competition and Matthew Sut- cliffe and Emma Nolan for winning prizes in the junior section. All of these students received a certificate to- gether with a $10.00 prize. School Concert The concert was a great success again this year and we would like to thank the Hall Committee for all their co- operation and help, the P&C and the wider school com- munity for supporting the students to make the night so enjoyable. We have made a DVD of the performance which is available for sale at a cost of $5.00 from the front office. We raised the fantastic sum of $234.50 in donations which went towards expenses. Camp @ Moulamein Thanks to Vanessa Barnes for taking Nathan Barnes and Lachlan Day to a camp at Moulamein as a follow up to the Schools Spectacular trip last year. The program is called Aspire me to Colour My World and Nathan and Lachlan participated with students from 15 other schools and were able to access the expertise of experi- enced art teachers. They were engaged in workshops learning about sculpture, lino printing and film. The camping aspect of the event meant that students had the opportunity to mix and to make new friends. Jasmine Bateman and Allanah Moloney will be going on the Sydney trip to Schools Spectacular this term. These are excellent opportunities to give students the chance to develop their creative arts and to have a city experience. Thanks also to Ms Vicki Kempton for organising these opportunities and to the Moulamein Public School, staff and P&C for hosting it. HSC Samantha O’Riordan and Phillip Purtell have started their Higher School Certificate exams this week with English Papers 1 & 2 and Industrial Technology-Multi media. We wish them all the best. Our new hall has come into its own as an excellent venue for holding ex-ams. Samantha and Phillip will be having their Year 12 graduation at Barellan. Families and staff will attend to celebrate with the Year 12 cohort from the Partnership schools. Demi Smith, Jamie Walker and Greg May have all started their Year 12 courses enthusiastically. It is won-derful to see our senior students taking full advantage of the opportunity to study a diverse range of subjects with students from similar schools and teachers experienced in their particular areas. Canberra Excursion Primary students are very excited, planning their trip to Canberra. This is a very important opportunity to visit our National Capital and experience democracy first hand. Our itinerary covers a very wide range of educa-tional areas. We will be sharing this excursion with students from Urana Central, St Francis Xavier Urana and Savernake. Driver Education Students with L Plates will have a driving lesson at Oaklands next Thursday under a road safety driver pro-gram run in conjunction with the Finley High School and the NRMA. We thank Urana Shire for their finan-cial support and Woody Motors Berrigan for their par-ticipation. Teacher Training Mrs Fiona Marshall attended a LEGO training day in Melbourne last week. She is very excited by the range of learning experiences available through the various application of LEGO. Last term Mrs Marshall and Years 7 & 8 students thoroughly enjoyed the LEGO robotics work that they did. Staff completed CPR updates this week to comply with the departments regulations that CPR training be com-pleted every 12 months. Thanks to Miss Melinda Elith for presenting the session. Melinda is a Royal Life Sav-ing Trainer. Thanks also to Mel for her work with our senior students last term. School Improvements A 1000L rainwater tank has arrived and will shortly be fitted to the school hall. This is part of the BER (Building Education Revolution) program. The fibre network has suffered a certain amount of mouse damage and has bee repaired this week. We are trying to mouse proof sensitive areas of the school. Moulamein Art Camp Nathan and I went to Moulamein Public School for two days. We went on Wednesday, 12th October and we stayed at the Caravan Park so we did not have to get up early. There was 15 schools there. We did film making, plaster making and lino print. It took us two days to finish our projects. We got to go because last year Na-than, Alley and I went to Sydney for the Schools Spec-tacular and the people who were in Year 6 got to go. We had a great time, made new friends and even slept overnight at the school. The food was great also.

English Report We might be into the last term of the year but that has not made anything less hectic. Most importantly, Samantha and Phillip completed their two English pa-pers this week. Both of them were very comfortable and happy with both the quality and content they produced. I

am sure that their results will be testament to the suc-cess of the Riverina Access Partnership and the oppor-tunities provided to students through that program. On a similar topic, the previous Year Elevens have be-gun their HSC! This is their first term of their final year. I am also very fortunate in the respect that I am coordi-nating three English subjects in the Riverina Access Partnership. Through this I am teaching students at Oak-lands, Urana, Hillston and Barellan all through video conferencing. This is a great opportunity for both the students and myself, as it provides everyone with far more variety and opportunity. Junior students are fast approaching their yearly exams and are busy recapping and refreshing on topics this year as well as current topics being studied in class. There may not be much time left, but there is still a lot of work to get through. Students need to ensure they continue to study both at school and at home in prepara-tion of their exams. Finally, I would like to wish Sam O’Riordan and Phillip Purtell all the best as they embark on the next adventure of their life when they enter the big wide world of em-ployment and responsibility. If they approach every challenge they encounter with the same enthusiasm and perseverance they demonstrated at school they will be destined for success!

Jeremy Atkins English/History Teacher Textile News Last term students were issued with the challenge of producing A3 size art quilts with the theme of “colour and texture”. It was a difficult task to achieve in one term with only one artist completing the entire task! Amy Nolan produced the beautiful quilt pictured here. Other works of art are still in progress and we will con-tinue to work on them during lunch times in term 4. A huge thank you to all those generous people who do-nated the fabrics and trimmings which inspired great creativity and to the students who have worked hard in their lunch times to create their stunning artworks. Burrumbuttock Village Festival The school has obtained a market stall site at the Bur-rumbuttock Village Festival (Sunday, 20th October) to enable the students to sell excess vegetables and sheep manure. Mr Robey will be at the festival and will pro-vide the equipment but he will need some students to help sell the vegetables. If any parent can take 2 or 3 or more students across to Burrumbuttock on Sunday, it would be a great help and hopefully an enjoyable day. Proceeds from the market stall will be used to supplement major excursions. Please contact the school for more details. Vegetables for Sale Plenty of herbs, silver beet, beetroot, cabbage, pumpkin, rhubarb and kale. Please contact the school office or just come in Thursday or Friday.

Students finished Term 3 with a great day in Wagga. A lot of fun and new experiences were enjoyed at Air-bourne Gymnastics where students undertook a variety of gymnastic and wall climbing activities. Lunch was had at the Botanical Gardens, giving students a chance to look at many different environments before it was time to head back to Oaklands. Year Six were invited on the day as part of the transition in to secondary—getting to know the secondary students and staff better.

The HSC has commenced, with students completing English on Tuesday and Wednesday in the new school call. Industrial Technology Multimedia is on Friday and the last few exams will be completed the following week. Well done Sam and Phillip and best wishes in the exams and for your future. Trial School Certificate exams were also underway this week and are run in the same format as the actual School Certificate (two written exams each day on Mon and Tue and then the computing skills test done later in the week). Year 9 also had their Maths and English yearly exams with the Year 10 students and the junior elective exams were held on Thursday. Friday the 28th will see a combined OCS-UCS SRC take place, with students heading over to Urana for a sport/team building afternoon and BBQ lunch. The jun-ior elective session will also take place, with junior stu-dents going over a period earlier so they can meet some of the UCS teachers and hear about the electives on of-fer from the two schools. A DVD has been produced of the school concert using the video footage Mrs Kerr took and is available from the school office for $5. Once the initial batch of DVDs are sold, orders will be accepted for more to be pro-duced. There is still a lot of sheep manure for sale which is great for gardens. Final payments for the Tasmania ex-cursion is due by the end of the month. Students are ex-cited about the trip but getting a little anxious about fly-ing— it would be appreciated if parents didn’t let stu-dents watch shows like Air Crash Investigators etc until after the trip. This week has been a busy week for me, going to Al-bury on Tuesday and Wednesday for a Board of Studies administration meeting on one day and an ICT in

Schools conference on Wednesday. We’re currently investigating the use of the Kindle and other ebook readers as an option for the library while tablets such as the ipad or devices like the ipod touch are being re-searched as an option to assist learning in the classroom environment.
