‘Offering a Whole Education in Practice’

Five years ago we set off on a journey of curriculum redevelopment in response to a learner audit highlighting gaps in our student’s skills and knowledge. This process of intensive change in a challenging climate has led to a turnaround in our educational approach and organisational culture.

In this session I will explore the theoretical and logistical steps required to make these changes. These include, Creating a learner vision, Shifting educational Thinking, Useful Research, Curriculum Design, Additional Provision for a Whole Education, and building a Dream Team.

The resulting changes in our curriculum provision have led to cross curricular project based learning, teaching to large groups, experiential learning, professional partnerships and tutoring, enrichment curriculums, wellbeing provisions, flexible timetabling, skills based learning and a shifting pedagogical approach. Our partnerships include, Handprint Theatre, Royal College of Art, Mousetrap Theatre Company, Creative Futures (Music), Theatre Director Thierry Lawson in conjunction with the War Horse, Greencraft, The Brit School, Deafinately Theatre, Graeae Theatre Company, Tate Teachers, The Horniman Museum, Step into Dance, South Bank University and Oxford Brookes University. Some specific provision highlights include:

• Enquiry Based Learning with roots in Future Lab's Enquiring Minds and High Tech high model from the US, • Enrichment Curriculum in which pupils are as likely to learn Architecture, ice cream making or work with the Royal Ballet. • Learning to Learn program with visual teaching strategies, flash cards and assessments• Sensory Start : T’ai Chi, Capeoira or Yoga and a healthy breakfast
