Tony Roos graduated in 1986 and starred in both basketball and baseball while attending Jim Thorpe.

His career began earlier, though, while playing CYO basketball for the St. Joe’s Hammers where he scored over 500 points while playing for them. In 1981, the Hammers finished undefeated with a 17-0 record and won the Allentown Diocesan Basketball Championship and Tony was named MVP of the CYO All-Star game.

Record-Setting Football Team inducted into JTASHOF

The 2004 Jim Thorpe Area Olympian Football Team, led by Head Coach Mark Rosenberger, finished the regular season with a 10-0 record and was the only football team in Jim Thorpe High School history to win 10 games in one season. Among their many achievements, they finished as 2004 Anthracite 8 League Champions; won the ‘209’ Trophy for the 3rd straight year defeating Lehighton 62-7 and won the P & B Trophy for the Best Team in the Panther Valley region for the 2nd straight year. They were ranked #1 in the area by Blue Ridge Cable; ranked #7 in the WNEP Super 16, which was the highest ranking in school history, and were voted as high as #4 in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette State AAA rankings for 2004. The Olympians played in the District XI AAA football championship where they lost to Pottsville, 25-19 in a game that wasn’t decided until the final play. That game ended their season with a 10-1 record which was one of the best overall team records ever achieved by an Olympian football team. During the season they gave up a total of 74 points in all 11 games. As tough as they were giving up points, they were the opposite when scoring them. In 2004, they scored 426 points, averaging 38.7 points per game while giving up only 6.7 points per game on defense. They averaged 341 total yards on offense while holding their opponents to an average of 134 yards. The only team to score more than 7 points a game against them in the regular season was Tamaqua, who was beaten soundly by the Olympians in the season opener, 54-14. After that game the Olympian defense had 4 shutouts and 5 games where their opponents didn’t score more than 7 points. This was such a great team that 13 players were selected to the Area All-Stars (1st team, 2nd team or honorable mention). Leading that group was the Times-News Player of the Year, Jason Figure, who scored 24 touchdowns that season, and 1st Team All-State Defensive Back, Aaron Smith and 2nd team All-State Offensive Lineman, Jacob Heydt. Also receiving All-Star mention were Jason Calcano, Dan Flizak, Justin Young, Keith Hontz, Adam Busocker, Mike Rambo, Craig Zurn, Tyler O’Shura, Shawn Bradley and Patrick Holland. Completing the roster were: Albert Meriano, Joe Mariano, Josh Hontz, Tom Cannelley, Kari Moll, Vishnu Kashidas, Philip Redline, Bryan Baker, Scott McGonigal, Mike Bingaman Kyle Porembo, Travis Andrews, Tom Hannon, Adam LaRizzio, Lance Malatak, Matthew Dunbar, Matt Rambo, Keith Long, Jeremy Fleck, Kenny McGardle, Joe Plummer, Bob Mathurin, Peter Skaflestad, Mike Taptich, Vince Yaich, Steve Martin and Michael Rambo. Head Coach Mark Rosenberger had as his varsity assistants: Frank Jacobs, Jason Jacobs, Dave Malkin, Pat Morgans, Anthony Vecolitis and Christopher Walkowiak. His Freshman-Junior High Coaches were Frank Miller, Ed Kocha and Robert Schaeffer. The Athletic Trainers were Mindy Sando and Heather Kline and the managers were Nicole DeVincenzo, Danielle Marchione, Jonathan Moronta, Victoria Rowlands and Alexis Vitlanueva. Wilmer Redline was the Film Manager. Jim Thorpe compiled victories and statistics in that season like no other in school history. In fact, its regular season performance was one of the most dominating in area football history. Years from now, area sports historians will look back in awe at the numbers that the Jim Thorpe Olympian Football Team put up in 2004.
