Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame 2011 Scholarship Winners

During the past two years, our “Football Ma-nia" fund-raising ticket has been a huge success for our organization. During those years our membership has purchased 682 tickets and we thank each of you for the support. This is a fund-raiser that our organization truly needed to assist us with our financial needs to continue donating to the many athletic organizations we help on a annual basis. The “Football Mania” tickets will be mailed out later in July, as we are hopeful that more of our membership will participate with the NFL season starting in September. Previously, we have mailed these tickets out with our member-ship mailing, and we feel many of our members let this slide because of the early mailing date and as time goes by, the ticket is forgotten about. If you are a sports minded person, and enjoy football, this ticket will hold your interest for the 17 week season. Look for the “Football Mania” ticket in the mail later this summer!!!!! Last year, 2010 was our third year for this fundraising ticket for our organization. We sent one ticket to all of our membership, and you purchased 250 tickets which was a very good return for us. We thank you! For us to continue what we have done (support our annual schol-arship funds, donate to numerous youth athletic programs, pay for Hall of Fame plaques, and fi-nance the annual induction banquet). We needed an annual fundraiser that is go-ing to assist us with our financial needs. This year we purchased 500 FOOTBALL MANIA TICKETS, if you purchased a ticket from us in 2010, we will send you one in late July. Because we are a sports organization, the enclosed ticket should be something our members would have an interest in. It’s self explanatory and rather simple to follow. Once you return your ticket stub to us, we record all the ticket numbers into the computer and you can follow your progress weekly just by going online and using the web-site: (www.charity mania.com) at the bottom of your ticket. During the 2010 football season, we did have some winners: a $100.00 winner and a couple of $25.00 winners. It’s all luck but keeps you very interested during the NFL SEASON. Football Mania is an exciting sweepstakes based on pro football with 6 prizes each week and 2 grand prizes at the end of the season. There are numerous organizations on a na-tional level, and one locally, that use this fund-

raising ticket. Because of the other local orga-nization that uses this ticket, and because some of our members have previously purchased this ticket from them, we will not enclose a ticket for those members as we do not want to deter them from that organization. You are in no way obligated to purchase this ticket, however, we truly encourage it. Without our 1,000 members, this organization would struggle financially. Our $5.00 mem-bership dues only can take us so far, and with inflation the way it is, we are asking for your support with this fundraiser. Sweepstakes ticket holders can win thou-sands of dollars based on the performance of the randomly assigned professional football teams written on the tickets. Football Mania sweepstakes are exciting and engaging for participants because everyone has an equal chance of winning. Winning tickets are based on the points scored and yards gained by the football teams randomly assigned to it. Each week during the Football Mania season, the holder of the winning ticket wins prize money - it’s that easy! Each Football Mania sweepstakes ticket contains 3 random teams (called a ‘team com-bination) in each week of the Football Mania season you have a different set of teams each week. No two tickets have the same 3 teams in any given week. The total number of points scored by the three teams determines the val-ue of the ticket. If two tickets have the same score, the total yards gained by the 3 teams is used as a tiebreaker. The more yards gained by

the teams, the higher the score. The fewer the yards gained by the teams, the lower the score. The tickets with the four highest scoring team combinations and the two lowest scoring team combinations each week win prizes. Throughout the 17-week season, participants check their tickets to see if they’ve won prizes. “Football Mania” sweepstakes ticket holders have 6 chances to win a prize in each of the 17 weeks of the professional football season. They also have a chance to win two grand prized at the end of the season.

How winning tickets are calculated. Each week Charity Mania determines the win-ning tickets. They then send us the prize money so that we can send it to the winners with a per-sonalized letter thanking them for their support. Charity Mania also posts the winning ticket number on the web site each week so that ticket holders can see if they’ve won.

Sign-up dates for Football ManiaFootball Mania officially begins September 2011 (the first week of the professional football season). We need you to return your ticket stub before September 1st so we can enter all the ticket stub numbers into the computer so they are all on file for the first game of the season. Thank you for your consideration, this fund-raiser is very important to our organization and we hope you will take the time to participate and return your stubs ASAP. We are excited that this will become a annual fundraising event. Each ticket cost $20.00 - please make checks pay-able to: The Jim Thorpe Are Sports Hall of Fame.

JIM THORPE SPORTS HALL OF FAME WEBSITE !!!!!We are online. During the summer of 2009 we contracted Keystone Networking Consultants, LLC to create our web-site. You can find us under jtsportshof.org. We are currently working to place 20 years of information on the site, regarding all our inductees pictures and bios from each of the banquet programs over the past 20 years. A Jim Thorpe High School student, Ms. Lauren Zurn, is forwarding the information to Keystone Networking Consultants as she finds time. This is a project that Lauren will get credit for in her school study program.

There is information on the site at this time, so we suggest you check it out and if you have any feedback, we are open for suggestion. Take into consideration, 20 years of information is a lot to get online, so be patient with us and we will eventually get all the needed information up for your convenience.

On May 21, 20 standing 8 feet tall, the newest statue of Jim Thorpe shows the sports legend with his right arm extended and his fingers stretched across a discus. The bronze tribute was unveiled the day set aside in Pennsylvania as "James Francis Thorpe Day," and the first day of the 15th annual Jim Thorpe Birthday Celebration Weekend. "Jim Thorpe is not your local high school athlete who did good. Jim Thorpe is not your national figure who did good. Jim Thorpe is an international icon who did great," said a member of the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame, the group that spearheaded efforts to have the statue placed in the borough bearing his name. The dedication brought elected officials, former Olympians, area residents and local athletes to Thorpe's final resting place along Joe Boyle Circle. Members of the Lenni-Lenape tribe offered a tribute to Thorpe, who was a Native American descent, and state Rep. Doyle Heffley, R-122, read a resolution declaring Saturday "James Francis Thorpe Day." Thorpe's grandson, Michael Koehler, and his wife, Patricia, arrived from Minocqua, Wis., to watch as a tarp was removed to reveal the sculpture. Koehler talked about his grandfather's achievements, from winning the decathlon and pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics in Sweden to his professional football and baseball careers. "Jim Thorpe was the kind of athlete who refused to lose," Koehler said. "And anyone who played against him soon learned that lesson. That's the kind of athlete he was." The Jim Thorpe Sports Hall of Fame again commissioned sculptor Edmund E. Shumpert to chisel the latest tribute. In 2007, Shumpert finished a sculpture of Thorpe wearing his football uniform. George "Chuck" Hanna, who served as master of ceremonies, called the statue "amazing," and commented on the attention to detail. It's a pure facsimile of Thorpe's face and body. It's just very impressive. Look at his shoelaces, the veins and the wrinkles in his shorts." The newest statue stands toward the front of the mausoleum where Thorpe's remains were interred in 1957. His third wife made a deal with officials from Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk to have the towns accept the remains and recognize themselves as "Jim Thorpe." While some members of Thorpe's family filed a federal lawsuit demanding his remains be returned to his native Oklahoma, Koehler said he supports keeping the remains in Jim Thorpe. Years ago, Koehler noted, Thorpe's daughter, Grace Thorpe, performed a Native American burial ritual for her father. "My grandfather has returned to Mother Earth. He lies on sanctified ground. My half of the family doesn't see any reason whatsoever to change any of that --to disinter his remains and to take him to some obscure plot in Shawnee, Ok.," Koehler said to a rumble of applause. Jack Kmetz said the Jim Thorpe Sports Hall of Fame, a group formed in 1989 to perpetuate Thorpe's memory, honor local athletes and support youth sports programs, hopes to commission another statue of Thorpe. It would be the last, and would depict Thorpe in a baseball uniform. As the program progressed, members of the Jim Thorpe Olympians track and cross-country teams set off to light the torch for the Carbon County Special Olympics. "The students have "Jim Thorpe" written on their shirts," said Cynthia Stinger, who competed on the U.S. women's handball team in three Olympics and is manager of the U.S. Olympic Committee. "If that doesn't inspire them to be swifter, higher and stronger, I don't know what will." So, fittingly, several former Olympians were present among the honored guests who gathered to honor this great athlete, they were, Brenda Borgh

Bartlett, Pennsylvania Olympian (1976 Olympic Team Swimming Member); J.K. Smith, 1948 Rowing Team Gold Medalist; and Steve Kirk, Pennsylvania Olympian (1984 -1988 Olympic Handball Team Member). Also present and making comments were: Michael Sofranko, Mayor of Jim Thorpe; Charles Getz, Carbon County Commissioner; John T. Yudichak, Pennsylvania State Senator; Doyle Heffley, Pennsylvania State Representative; Candice Kelly, news Anchor WBRE-TV 28; Sofia Ojeda, News Reporter WNEP-TV 16; and Kim Bell, General Manager Blue Ridge Communications TV-13. After Hall of Fame President Jack Kmetz acknowledged and greeted the event's guests of honor, he went on to speak of how the difficult economic times that we are now experiencing have made it more and more difficult to raise the funding for these statues. Hoping to raise the needed funding for the third and final bronze statue in the series which would be of Jim Thorpe playing baseball, Kmetz noted that the Hall of Fame would like to see community support for the project and in the future they will be soliciting funds through letters mailed out to the community. Helping to get the momentum rolling on that project, when his turn came to speak, Sen. Yudichak started by announcing that the "Yudichak Family Fund" would be donating $1,000 towards the third statue in the series. These bronze statues are gifts to the community of Jim Thorpe, not just to be shared by the few who made this project a reality, but to be shared by the many of you who make up the community, the many tourist's and visitors who will observe these beautiful statues and the many news media who will write about these gifts in the future. To you people who live outside the area, please make sure you see these statues the next time you are in town.

You can Help! We often hear from the public or members, “Why isn’t this person in the Hall of Fame”? Well, the simple answer is that a resume has not been submitted for review. Research into the accomplishments of a particular athlete is a very time consuming endeavor. It’s impossible for the Committee members to be aware of all the deserving candidates and, therefore, we depend on the membership or the public to submit names to us. One stipulation in our By-Laws is a candidate must be out of school 5 years before they are eligible for induction. Please feel free to submit a resume on them and we will hold the resume until they become eligible. We look forward to hearing from you. A nominee resume form can be found on our website, jtsportshof.org for your use. This form is required to be submitted under the "Hall of Fame" By-Laws. New resumes must be received by April 15th annually to be considered for induction during the current year.

FAMILY STYLE RAFTING TRIPOur "Family Style Rafting Trip On The Lehigh" last June was attended by 382 people and was a huge success for our third trip with the new Rafting Company, POCONO WHITEWATER ADVEN-TURES is one of the largest rafting cen-ters in the area. They are located 8 miles north on State Route 903. We are hopeful that the many people who supported our rafting trip in 2010, will consider coming down the river with us again. The date of the "Rafting Trip" is Sunday, June 26th. A copy of the "Rafting Trip Flier" is en-closed for your convenience. Currently we are contacting all the people who were on our previous mailing list from years past. If this date is accommodating to your day trips during this summer, we would appre-ciate your attendance. Just a reminder, due to the great response in 2010, the "Raft-ing Trip" is limited to the first 360 people who sign up. All the previous trips down the "Lehigh" were very special fundrais-ing events to our organization. Most of the profits from this event is set aside for our two scholarships that we present to two Jim Thorpe Area High School graduating seniors for the past 14 years. We are grateful for all your par-ticipation in the past, and we look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday, June 26th.Remember, the first 360 people who sign up, are on the river "with us".
