Veggie Pride Parade, NYC, 2009Coming together with one voice, one
expression of veggie pride
veggieprideparade.org
Building on the overwhelming successof last year’s parade, this year’s marchthrough Greenwich Village, New YorkCity, will surely be even bigger andbetter. Individually, one may be an ani-mal-rights activist, an environmentalist,or a person concerned with his orher health. But on Sunday,May 17, 2009, all will cometogether with one voice, one expression, of veggiepride, compassion, andsanity.
Parade participants areencouraged to dress up in cos-tumes and wear signboards announcing theirpride in their vegetarianlifestyle. Local restaurantsand vegetarian groupswill be represented withbanners and chants.PeTA’s Chris P. Carrot andVivaVegie’s Penelo PeaPod (the seven-foot-tallhuman peapod) will againhead up the parade (seeimage). But this time, aftera year of “married life,”the two will be accompanied by a gag-gle of baby veggies (offspring, that istoddlers dressed in costume).
The procession will begin as lastyear at 12 Noon in the Olde MeatDistrict (where 9th Ave., Gansevoort
St., Greenwich St., and Little West 12thSt. converge). It will culminate in UnionSquare Park, where a festival of music, speakers, exhibitors, and vegan foodwill take place.
From 1 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., the stagewill glisten with the passionate faces
of leaders and performersin the movement: We’llhear from activists, politi-cal and spiritual leaders, organizers, a school prin-cipal, a world-class ath-lete, a poet, and fighters
for of all stripes.• At 2:10 p.m., winners of
the costume and po-ster-slogan contests willbe announced.
• At 4:15 p.m., a namingceremony will takeplace involving thebaby veggies.Organizer Pamela Rice
believes that with thisparade, “vegetarians willbe just a little less invisi-ble, their lifestyle just a lit-tle more tenable, and the
misconceptions about vegetarianismjust a little less pronounced.” Ms. Ricesaid, “I’m hoping that at this eventpeople will be amazed at the culturevegetarians have been creating inrecent years.

Modern American VegetarianismAlthough Dr. John “Cornflakes”Kellogg carried his vegetarian crusadeinto the 1940s, during the earlydecades of the twentieth century a tri-umvirate of self-appointed foodauthorities were helping to change theway Americans viewed the meat ontheir plates. The first ofthese was Upton Sinclair. Anovelist and social reformer,Sinclair became a foodreformer quite by accident. His novel, The Jungle(1906), which he had intend-ed to be a diatribe againstcapitalism, was so vivid in itsportrayal of the horrors ofthe meatpacking industrythat it gave the country a case ofnational dyspepsia. It was influential inthe passage of the Pure Food andDrug Act (1906), and one year after itspublication, the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration was formed. Sinclairhimself became a vegetarian, albeit foronly three years; however, there is nodoubt that many Americans were sostirred by his book as to swear off eat-ing meat altogether.
The next was Horace Fletcher. A cor-pulent American businessman,Fletcher lost weight by devising a sys-tem of repetitive chewing. Called“Fletcherism” it required that eachmorsel of food be chewed thirty-twotimes. When Fletcher found that meatoffered the greatest resistance tobeing liquefied through chewing, theGreat Masticator stopped eating meat
and recommended that earnest fol-lowers of his regimen do likewise. Assoon as Americans found that theycould lose weight simply through vig-orous mastication, Fletcherism sweptthe country.
The third reformer, BernarrMacfadden, was a rags-to-riches phys-
ical-culturist-turned-publish-ing-magnate and a charis-matic public health figure. As one of America’s richestyoung tycoons, he couldhave indulged his appetiteon a Lucullan scale, but helived chiefly on raw vegeta-bles and fruit. (Later in life,he became a bit of a back-
slider and included somemeat in his diet, but in his heyday, helived mainly on raw vegetarian food.)On rare occasions when he fell ill, hecured himself through fasting. In 1902he opened one of New York’s first veg-etarian restaurants, Physical Culture(named after his fitness magazine),where for a nickel one could dine onan entree like “Hamburger Steak,”which was made from nuts and vegeta-bles. By 1911 twenty vegetarianPhysical Culture restaurants hadsprung up in Philadelphia, Chicago, and sundry other locations.
In 1927 America’s longest continu-ously running vegetarian society wasfounded in Washington DC by MiltonTrenham with strong Seventh-DayAdventist backing. The VSDC is theoldest vegetarian organization in

either north or south America. On July 28, 1947, at a convention of
the American Naturopathic Associ-ation at the Commodore Hotel in NewYork, a vegetarian political party, theAmerican Vegetarian Party, wasformed with the goal of putting up apresidential candidate for the 1948election. Their candidate was Dr. JohnMaxwell, a naturopathic doctor andrestaurateur from Chicago. To opposeGeneral Dwight D. Eisenhower in the1952 election, they nominatedGeneral Herbert C. Holdridge, a vege-tarian West Point alumnus of the classof 1917. In every subsequent quadren-nial election until 1964 (by which timethe party had faded away) a candidateran for the Presidency on the vegetari-an ticket. More recently, DennisKucinich, one of the Democratic candi-dates for the presidential election in2008, is a self-proclaimed vegan whoattributes his stamina on the campaigntrail to his fleshless diet.A Paradigm ShiftThese days, in freezer cases across
America one can find a vast array ofvegetarian entrees, from the sophisti-cated to the ordinary. Supermarketsare stocking more and more vegetari-an food products. Vegetarian restau-rants continue to proliferate. Now,America is mounting its Veggie PrideParade-2! All of this suggests that thepopular image of vegetarianism as aneccentric, cranky, fringe movement hasundergone a paradigm shift. Amongyounger generations of Americans, itis very much in vogue to be a vegetar-
ian, if not a vegan.Rynn Berry is thehistorical advisor tothe North AmericanVegetarian Society. In addition to beingthe author of such
books as Famous Vegetarians, andFood for the Gods: Vegetarianism andthe World’s Religions, and Hitler:Neither Vegetarian Nor Animal Lover, and co-author of Becoming Raw (forth-coming in September, 2009), Rynn isthe author of The Vegan Guide to NewYork City, where he lives.
