Mission, vision and valuesThe mission of Nutrition Without Borders (NWB) is to help to reduce global nutrition inequalities. Currently, NWB has active programs in states of Africa, Latin-America and Spain. In these countries vulnerable population is identified, women before and after childbirth, children and elderly people. NWB provides to these people the basic access to food until their nutritional conditions are adequate.

The purposes of our mission are pursued by means of cooperation, tra-ining and empowerment based on the promotion of a balanced use of the world’s food resources and consequently, solidarity amongst the peoples of all nations.

The aim of Nutrition Without Borders is to become a reference in the promotion and protection of the right to food and nutrition.

HistoryNutrition Without Borders is a non-profit non-governmental organiza-tion engaged in humanitarian action, development, cooperation and intervention in the third and fourth world. NWB is an independent or-ganization, without political agenda, religious purpose or media identi-ty and with no financial interest, or any other profit-based group.

NWB was launched on the 14th of April 2005 under the auspices of the Spanish Society for Community Nutrition (SENC) and the UNESCO chair for the Investigation, Planning and Development of Health Sys-tems at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. NWB always acts in accordance to the provisions of Article 22 of the Spanish Constitution and the Spanish Organic Law 1/2002 of 22nd March, along with all applicable international and national norms.

NWB is a product of a group of health professionals that share the aim of working towards a solution for nutritional problems among the most disadvantaged populations.

DEVELOPMENT AND COOPERATION

Cooperation and development projects ai-ming at food security and the protection of maternal-health and children in the Republic of the Gambia.

SOCIAL ACTION

NWB is developing a project that takes ad-vantage of food resources and works within a network to contribute to reduce the waste food and the situation of poverty in the city of Barcelona.

TECHNICAL ADVICE

The experience of NWB team (dieticians, nu-tritionists, doctors, veterinarians, pharmacists, nurses, agronomists, etc.) give us the knowled-ge and experience to advise on the design and implementation of food safety and coopera-tion projects.

Development and cooperationThe strategy of Nutrition Without Borders in Africa and Latin-America has been focused on given priority to three factors: the low index of human development in most of these countries, the lack of adequate and functioning health services, and thirdly the consequent lack of ba-sic health and nutritional needs of these peoples.

Amongst the various nutritional areas that need strengthening, NWB focuses on maternal and child health, which are of fundamental im-portance to the future of a society. Likewise, NWB works for agricultural development, as a long-term nutritional comprehensive project, which aims to achieve long-lasting effects in local community development and the satisfaction of their nutritional needs.

GAMBIA Centres for Nutrition Recovery and Education (CREN)

On 7th of December of 2010 NWB launched the first Centre for Nutri-tion Recovery and Education, which was directed to support the health of women and young children for the Gambian population in the Up-per River Division. The Centre was inaugurated with the presence of the authorities and the civil society of the Republic of the Gambia, the NWB executive team, employees and members of the organization. On January of 2015 will be launched the second CREN in Soma, in the Lower River Region, expecting the same good results as the first one.

The CREN performs the following actions in order to reduce malnutrition of infants and expectant mothers:

Assistance to maternal and child malnutrition During admission they receive health and nutritional treatment in accordance with the lines of action for cases of mal-nutrition proposed by the World Health Organization, and with the action of the United Nations Children’s Fund and National Nutritional Agency.

Training aimed at local health personnel and civil society The Center for Nutritional Recovery and maternal-child Education from Basse trains community nurses in towns. In addition, it trains and shares professional knowledge in nutrition and hygiene concerns to mothers of malnourished children attending the CREN.

Screenings This activity is carried out by commu-nity nurses, coordinated by the NWB project’s health professional, one of the nurses of the CREN, the local manager of the Regional Health Team and a local nutritionist in charge from the National Nutritional Agency. Moderate malnutri-tion cases are treated in situ and severe cases are transferred to the CREN or the Regional Hospital in Basse.

Agricultural Projects Within the strategy of reducing malnu-trition, NWB has conducted a project to support the promotion of sustainable farming, encouraging and training the general population of the selected villages about the cultivation and con-sumption of local plants with higher nutritional content.

Social actionBCN comparteix el menjar is a project that takes advantage of food resources and works within a network to contribute to reducing the situation of poverty in the city of Barcelona.

The goal of this project is to protect the universal right to food access of the citizens of Barcelona living in poverty.

> We select beneficiaries that will receive the food.

> We contact to food companies and others to build partnership.

> We design an internal protocol for the reuse of surplus cooked food.

> We guarantee the safety and security of food around the reuse circuit.

BCN comparteix el menjar wants to become a brand and reference for a city of sustainability and solidarity, of a city that organizes itself in order to share and optimize food resources.

Thanks to the work circuit we get leverage cooked food-surplus from hotels and food companies in the city and offer a balanced meal to the users of social centers. We are providing a daily meal to a minimum of 120 people.

Technical adviceNWB offers a technical advisory service for the proper execution of safety food, food recovery and waste reduction projects. We have been working to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable individuals, families and communities in developing and developed countries by strengthening food security and nutrition policies, pro-grams and systems.

WHAT WE DO

> Technical advice to Nestlé Spain to implement a corporate volun-teering Project called “Tu plato es salud” related to food security.

> Nutritional Intervention in the Project “Piecitos Colorados” together with the Prosegur Foundation in 32 schools of 7 countries of Latin America.

> Technical advice to the council of Valles Occidental (Catalonia, Spain) for the proper execution of food recovery and waste reduc-tion projects.
