Virtual School Network

• Will a Virtual School Network re-invent how teaching and learning occurs in the Northern Territory?

• How can a Virtual School Network assist the Northern Territory to move from a ‘Resource Based Society’ to a Knowledge Based Society?

• What systemic re-structures and re-engineering are required to support an efficient and effective Virtual School Network?

The future is here

There is no question of whether Virtual Schooling is appropriate for teaching and learning in the Northern Territory. The actual questions are related to the implementation of Virtual Schooling in the Northern Territory.

1997: One Virtual School: Florida Virtual School

2008: 1,000,000+ Virtual School enrolments in the USA

2019: 50% of all 9 to 12 classes will be delivered virtually in the USA

Virtual Schools are established world wide and over 200 Education Institutions offer teaching and learning via Second Life.

Singapore• 1997

Singapore recognised the need to align education with the Global Knowledge Economy.

• 2006 Singapore had enacted strategies for education to be part of the Global Knowledge Economy – Future Schools

It was reported that Australia had fallen behind the OECD as an investor in Knowledge.

The Geography of InnovationCommercial innovation and scientific innovation. The few places that do both well are very strongly positioned in the global economy. These regions have little to fear, and much to gain, from continuing globalization.

Collaboration vs Presentation

• Crescent Girls' School Future School "To excel in an increasingly complex and globalised economy, students need to be active self-driven learners with a passion for lifelong learning. They also need to acquire ease in working collaboratively, leading virtual teams, and harnessing technology to achieve effective outcomes," said its principal Ms Eugenia Lim.”

• The “box” classroom doesn’t meet the needs for Generation Virtual. Educational Institutions do not know what jobs will exist in the next 10 years. There is no certainty of what technologies will be employed.

Googly advice to students

• Analytical reasoning. Google is a data-driven, analytic company. When an issue arises or a decision needs to be made, we start with data. That means we can talk about what we know, instead of what we think we know.

• Communication skills. Marshalling and understanding the available evidence isn't useful unless you can effectively communicate your conclusions.

• A willingness to experiment. Non-routine problems call for non-routine solutions and there is no formula for success. A well-designed experiment calls for a range of treatments, explicit control groups, and careful post-treatment analysis. Sometimes an experiment kills off a pet theory, so you need a willingness to accept the evidence even if you don't like it.

• Team players. Virtually every project at Google is run by a small team. People need to work well together and perform up to the team's expectations.

• Passion and leadership. This could be professional or in other life experiences: learning languages or saving forests, for example. The main thing, to paraphrase Mr. Drucker, is to be motivated by a sense of importance about what you do.
