The Nigerian Society of Engi-

neers took its management

staff through a week-long

training on International Fi-

nancial Reporting Standards

(IFRS), spanning 5th – 8th Feb-ruary, 2013.

IFRS is the method of finan-

cial reporting instituted by

the International Accounting

Standards Board (IASB) and

enforced by the Financial Re-

porting Council of Nigeria

(FRCN), to serve as an up-

grade from the hitherto

adopted Generally Accepted Accounting Principles

(GAAP). It will be recalled

that the federal government

of Nigeria had backed this en-

forcement with an Act of the

National Assembly since

2011, stipulating penalties for

non-compliance.

Companies, financial institu-

tions, professional bodies, not-

for-profit organizations and

all Public Interest Entities

(PIEs) are expected to adopt

IFRS at certain stipulated

timelines, but perhaps the

most interesting tinge to

NSE’s adoption is that all

members of management cut-

ting across various profes-

sions – Engineering, Ac-

counting, Law, Human Re-

source, Communications, etc.

 – participated in the train-

ing. The total compliance

date for organizations like

NSE is December 2013.

While declaring the training

session open, NSE President,

Engr. Mustapha Balarabe

Shehu, FNSE, applauded the

virtues of knowledge ex-

change which the NSE –

IFRS training signified. He

said he had always held the

belief that if knowledge is

hoarded then the custodian

of such knowledge is invaria-

bly ignorant; noting that the

ability to disseminate knowl-

edge effectively across profes-

sional barriers makes the so-

ciety a more enlightened one.

He gave kudos to the facilita-

tors of the training pro-

gramme, Analytics Secure

 Associates, a consortium of

Chartered Accountants and

financial experts for thinking

in the same direction as the

management of the Nigerian

Society of Engineers.

Engr. Dr. Tunde Olatunji,FNSE, the Director of Profes-

sional Development Services

of NSE, in a vote of thanks at

the end of the training ses-

sion, described the training as

very illuminating. He com-

mended the trainers and

noted that the model deployed

was captivating enough tocommand the attention and

assimilation of the trainees.

He went on to thank the NSE

management for the initia-

tive.

The training was concluded on

February 8, 2013 and the first

certificate was presented to

the Executive Secretary,

Engr. Ahmed K. Amshi,

The Nigerian Society of Engi-

neers (NSE) on Thursday, Feb-

ruary 14, 2013, in Abuja offi-

cially commissioned a world-class design laboratory and

continuing education facility

for engineering practice. The

institute called Engineering

Practice & Resource Centre

(EPRC), situated within the

headquarters building of the

NSE, was set up last year to

serve as the training arm and

capacity building platform forthe Society.

The President of NSE, Engr.

Mustafa Balarabe Shehu,

FNSE, who in a brief cere-

mony, cut the tape to signal

commencement of full-time op-

erations of the Centre, said the

EPRC has been mandated to

provide and deliver the best of

industry skills and knowledge

to all cadre of engineering per-

sonnel, through qualitativetraining aimed at providing

specialisations and continuing

professional education.

Engr. (Chief) Otis Anyaeji,

FNSE, Chairman/CEO of O.

T. Otis Engineering and also

the Vice President, Profes-

sional Development Services,

NSE and Engr. (Chief) G.

Massari, FNSE, the ManagingDirector of Danelec Limited,

received accolades from the

President at the commission-

ing ceremony. The President

extolled the two businessmen

for their magnanimity in sup-

porting the development of

the project. While Engr. Mas-

sari donated the computer

work stations for the Centre,

Engr. Anyaeji provided the

furniture.

The scope of operations envi-

sioned for the Centre is such

that it is expected to operate

as a global entity, hence the

decision to establish a Govern-

ing Board to run its affairs as

an autonomous body. In line

with its expansion plans,

branches of the Centre will be

replicated all over the six geo-

political zones of the countrywithin a short period of its es-

tablishment. The former Vice

Chancellor of the University

of Ibadan, Prof. Engr. Olufemi

Bamiro, FNSE, is currently

serving as the pioneer Chair-

man of the Governing Board

of the EPRC.

The Engineering Practice &

Resource Centre which is

dedicated to the memory of a

former President of the Soci-

ety, the late Engr. Mustapha

Bulama, FNSE, OON, is part-

nering with International En-

ergy Services Limited (IESL),

The Young Engineers/Future

Leaders (YE/FL) Convention inKuwait availed NSE delegates

opportunities for networking

and interacting with many

young engineers who have suc-

cess stories in their areas of

endeavours.

The Convention created an op-

portunity for engineers to in-

teract with the President-elect

of World Federation of Engi-

neering Organisations(WFEO), Marwan Abdelhamid;

Prof. Gretchen Kalonji, Assis-

tant Director-General for

Natural Sciences, under the

United Nations Scientific and

Cultural Organisation

(UNESCO); Mr. Dick G. Bo-

char, the Secretary-General of

the European Federation of

National Engineering Associa-tions; amongst others.

The Nigerian delegates at-

tended all planned pro-

grammes, including the re-

hearsals for the opening cere-

mony. Many lessons were

gleaned from that on the recipe

for organizing a great and suc-

cessful event. They also inter-acted meaningfully with the

 Young Engineers (YE) from

member countries present at

the Convention such as Bah-

rain, Saudi Arabia, United

Kingdom, United States of

 America, Germany, Oman,

South Africa and host coun-

try, Kuwait.

All the presentations madeduring the Convention cen-

tered on the following interna-

tional issues: Global Popula-

tion Growth and Relative

Scarce Resources, Urban Agri-

culture in the 21st Century,

How to Start Your SmallScale Businesses, 3 Stages of

Failure, Social Innovation,

Engineering and technology,

Globalization and Interna-

tional Relations.

As part of the closing events

for the 2013 youth convention,

all participants were taken on

a tour of the “Green Camp”,

which is an eco-friendly habit-able camp designed, con-

structed and managed by the

Kuwaiti Society of Engineers

in the heart of the Kuwaiti

desert.

Indeed, the Kuwaiti Conven-

tion was an insightful experi-

ence that has opened the eyes

of the delegates from Nigeriato new frontiers and ways of

organizing a successful inter-

national conference and they

are ready to take the chal-

lenge for WEC 2014.

The Kwara Government is to spend a total of

N810 million to build a College of Engineering

Technology at its state-owned University at

Malete to boost youth empowerment.

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed who made this

known on Thursday, February 7, 2013 during

the foundation laying ceremony of the college,

said that the amount is for phase one of the

project. He said his administration is deter-

mined to ensure that the University produces

highly skilled engineers to become entrepre-

neurs in the competitive global economy of the

21st century.

Ahmed said that this is also in line with the

vision of his administration in establishing an

International Vocational Centre in Ajasse-Ipo,

designed to produce middle-level manpower.

According to him, the vocational centre, when

fully in operation will transform Kwara into

the hub for the production of vocational skills

in the country. The governor called on stake-

holders in the state to contribute their quota

to the growth and development of the institu-

tion to make it rank among the top 10 univer-

sities in Nigeria in the next five years.

“I wish to appeal to captains of industry, fi-

nance and banking institutions, Information

and Communications Technology (ICT) compa-

nies and multinational companies to startthinking of what they can do for and get from

the Kwara State University,” he said.

Ahmed assured employers of labour that

graduates of the University would be top

notches in science, research and development.

“Graduates of this University will enter the

economy equipped with world-class education

and the business mind-set necessary for suc-

cessful entrepreneurship,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof.

AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, in his speech, said

the academic programmes are designed to

nurture the spirit of anticipation, agility,

adaptability and adventure. Na’Allah said the institution’s College of Engi-

neering and Technology would, among other

courses, run a programme on Aeronautical

and Astronomical Engineering, which he said

would be the first in Nigeria.
