a message from the president“When we give from the heart, helping someone in need and expecting nothing in return, we truly are touching the hand of God.”—Tom Harken

I read the above in The Millionaire’s Secret, written by Tom Harken, a 1992 Horatio Alger Award winner and owner of Casa Olé restaurants. Harken will be the featured speaker at LeTourneau University’s scholarship gala event Feb. 26, 2011 at Pinecrest Country Club in Longview. We will publicly thank many of our donors who have partnered with us to educate students to answer God’s call to be His ambassadors in every workplace in every nation.

Giving is all about relationships. It’s about our personal relationship with Christ and wanting to serve Him by be-ing good stewards of what He has entrusted to us. It’s about our relationships with others and wanting to share with those who need a helping hand. Giving can be of our time, our talent or our “treasure,” those finances that flow through us because of the gifts God has enabled us to control.

Our founder, R.G. LeTourneau, knew our treasure is in heaven. He once said, “We businessmen have an old saying, ‘You can’t take it with you,’ but that’s wrong. You can take it with you. The Bible says we are sending it up, wood, hay and stubble, gold, silver, and precious stones. It’s going on up there. It will be tried by the fire. And what is left from the fire will be waiting for us when we get there. Maybe you can’t actually take it with you, but you can send it on ahead. Let’s ask God to use us to send it on ahead and have it waiting for us when we get there.”

We are blessed at LETU to have relationships with great people who agree with Mr. LeTourneau. They have the heart to give of their earthly treasures to make an eternal difference by helping us equip graduates who see their life’s work as a holy calling. This Fall 2010 President’s Annual Report issue of the NOW magazine features our honor roll of donors as well as some who have seen the need for endowed scholarships that will help students for all the years to come.

You will read about some special friends like Bob and Barbara Ferguson of Granbury, Texas, who have funded an endowed scholarship to honor their family; LETU trustee Steve Voelzke of Longview whose family foundation has endowed an LETU scholarship in memory of his brother; an endowment started by Alpha Omega society alumni to honor professor Paul Kubricht and Sidney and Anna Lee Al-len who have endowed our first nursing scholarship. You also will meet our Development team, those profession-als you can call on to find out how you can partner with us. And you also will see some of the giving of service our students are doing to make the world a more comfortable place for children in wheelchairs.

Despite a difficult economy, giving to LETU has been up, with over 800 new donors, and total gifts of $3.7 million. An increased emphasis on scholarship endowments has been very successful. We recently received the largest single donation in the university’s history, a $5 million endowment from an anonymous donor specifically for home-schooled students.

Yes, our students are changed when their dream of a LETU education becomes possible. But the lives of those who give are also changed. As Tom Harken wrote, the giver is changed because he is able to touch the hand of God. We are all blessed whenever we can experience God.

On the cover is LeTourneau University’s new logo. The shield, a recognized traditional symbol for academic quality for universities, encloses a globe representing the university’s vision to equip students to make an impact for Christ in every workplace in every nation. Longitude and latitude lines form a stylized cross, providing a visual element of LETU’s core identity as an unapologetically Christian university. “LETU” inside the shield is easily recog-nizable as our official university abbreviation and refers to our Web address: www.letu.edu. Designed by Encore Multimedia, the new logo recently won a top MarCom award for brand identity.

“God needs businessmen, as well as preachers and missionaries.” That message trans-formed the lives of the late LeTourneau University founder R.G. LeTourneau and his wife, Evelyn, when they heard it from their pastor over nine decades ago. And it is as true today as it was then. God also needs lawyers, professors, engineers, pilots, nurses, doctors, air traffic controllers and a host of others in a variety of godly professions to serve him in every workplace in every nation. LETU’s objective over the past year has been to increase endow-ments for scholarships across the board, to enable students with financial needs to get an excellent education. A total of 32 new scholarships have been endowed. More than $6.5 million was committed in this past year, specifically for endowed scholarships. Here are a few of the people who have answered the call to give.

Sitting at his desk in his law office in Dalhart, Texas, Bob Ferguson heard the phone ring. He answered. One of his friends was inviting him that evening to

hear R.G. LeTourneau speak to the men’s group at his church. It had been a long day. Bob declined at first. He knew who LeTourneau was, of course. The man built the huge earth-moving machines with electric motors that were currently being used to grade land for the new interstate highway system being built under President Eisenhower’s administration. Bob knew he was also the man who, with his wife, said they didn’t need what they thought they did, so they lived simply on 10 percent of their earnings and gave away 90 percent to support Christian ministries. At his friend’s urging, Bob changed his mind. It seems LeTourneau was making a fuel stop on his flight back to Longview from a trip to the new state of Alaska. Walking down the steps to the basement at the Baptist church, Bob was intrigued to hear what this famed industrialist had to say about living a Christian life in business. How often do we miss opportunities by allow-ing our immediate responsibilities to prevent an opportunity of a lifetime? Bob asked this question rhetorically, remembering the occasion to hear R. G. LeTourneau speak. Hearing LeTourneau tell of his experiences and his Christian faith as a businessman touched a chord in Bob’s conscience, especially since Bob had recently heard people remark tongue-in-cheek that you could not be a Christian and a lawyer at the same time. LeTourneau dispelled that idea and gave Bob a vision that, fortunately, began to expand into a deeper Christian faith. When Bob returned home that evening, he gave his wife, Barbara, a full account. They began sup-porting LeTourneau College, which Mr. and Mrs. LeTourneau had established in Longview, Texas. It was not until much later that they visited the cam-pus, met several people and were able to see the effects of a life, or lives, well-lived. It was reported that “Mom” LeTourneau had even cooked meals in her home for many of the students. Barbara was surprised and pleased when she saw an exhibit on the campus that featured a story about R.G. LeTourneau having received an honorary degree from Colorado Women’s College that Barbara had at-tended after graduating from high school in Dalhart.

Barbara grew up in Dalhart and Bob grew up in Eastland, both smaller communities where the real values of life were apparent and where they were permitted to see the ministries, not only of their parents, but those of other people of faith. Bob practiced law in the Texas panhandle where he met and married Barbara in l953. Their three children were reared in Dalhart with the opportunity to grow up in similar circumstances to those that had blessed their parents. After Bob’s retirement, he and Barbara moved to Granbury where they continue to remain active in their church and community. “As we have become acquainted with LeTourneau University through the years, we are impressed with the quality of the students and of the administra-tion,” Bob said. “When we read about the various accomplishments of students and faculty in varied undertakings throughout the world, we are given a blessing in realizing that our support through the years has been well utilized. On the last visit to the campus, Bryan Benson gave us a personal tour of the new performance center that we have been privi-leged to have a small part in building.” The Ferguson Families’ Endowed Scholarship Fund was recently established not only to honor the mem-ory of the man for whom the university is named but also to honor the memory of the many mentors who have graciously nurtured the lives of Barbara and Bob and their family members through the years. The Ferguson’s permanent endowed scholarship fund is for new freshman students with demon-strated financial need who seek to attend LETU’s Longview campus. As an open endowment, anyone can donate to the fund, including friends, families and others, and it may receive proceeds from be-quests, trusts, life insurance, real estate and personal property or other sources. “What better way for us to continue using the re-sources entrusted to us than being able to influence lives of Christian students who will receive financial assistance from the scholarship fund and who are dedicated to using the great gifts God has given them to give back to society,” Barbara said. Remembering the words of Luke 12:48, Bob and Barbara recognize that “to whom much is given, much is required.” Bob has said that the most impor-tant decisions we make in life concern our Master, our mate and our mission; they feel the lives of the LeTourneaus demonstrate that principle so beauti-fully. n

T he lights were dimmed at the weekly Greg-gton Rotary Club meeting at the Summit Club in downtown Longview. Nearly all at the meeting had finished their lunches and

pushed back their plates, settling comfortably into their chairs around white-tableclothed tables, to listen to the day’s program speaker. LeTourneau University student David Eaton was making a PowerPoint presentation about a new program called LEGS, in which engineering students were building new prosthetic legs for $100 apiece for amputees in the developing world. After the presentation, Sidney Allen couldn’t believe it. “I couldn’t see how you could make an artificial limb for $100 when it costs thousands to get one in the United States,” he said. After the Rotary Club meeting, Allen approached the student and asked to see for himself. During the tour, Allen saw the undergraduate students‘ research and realized how their work would change lives. He made his first donation to LeTourneau University to support the LEGS program. The Allens have supported LeTourneau ever since, including funding for the Belcher Center, where the Allen Lobby is named in their honor. “The LEGS program was what initially got me interested in having a relationship with the school,” Allen said. “Before that, I had never set foot on the campus.” Allen has lived in Longview since 1969. He and his father owned the John Deere dealership in Longview for 15 years. For the past 22 years, Allen has owned Longview Scrap and Metal Company. Allen is originally from Roswell, New Mexico, “where all the aliens are supposed to be,” he said, grinning. He and his wife, Anna Lee, went to the same high school. Allen studied business at Eastern New Mexico University, then transferred to Texas Tech in Lubbock. He and Anna Lee married in 1965, and he took his first job at a bank in Dallas before they moved to Longview four years later. The Allens have three grown children and seven grandchildren. A very civic-minded man, Allen enjoys working

with local charities and contributing his time to community service. He serves on the Longview City Council where some of his liaison duties include construction advisory and appeals, drainage, waste-water, and development services and drainage task forces. He also is a new member of LeTourneau University’s President’s Advisory Council, where he attends monthly luncheons, gains new insights about the university and represents it to the com-munity. “LeTourneau students need to be involved with people who live in the Longview community,” Allen said. “If I had missed that Rotary Club meeting, I would not have gotten to know about the LEGS pro-gram and LeTourneau would not have benefited.” That one, 30-minute presentation by the busy engineering student six years ago was the catalyst in a relationship that will bless LETU students from now on. That’s because the Allens have funded an endowed scholarship that will continue in perpe-tuity to provide college assistance to local-area students with career aspirations in professional nursing and health sciences. The new scholarship will help students through the new bachelor of health sciences and bachelor of science in nursing degrees, offered in partnership with the University of Texas at Tyler. The Sidney and Anna Lee Allen Endowed Schol-arship Fund will provide scholarships for selected freshmen who are residents of Gregg County and have demonstrated financial need. As an open fund, it can receive additional donations from others who want to contribute, including proceeds from bequests, trusts, life insurance, real estate and personal property. "Community involvement helps build stronger communities," Allen said. This endowment was specified for nursing students after Allen asked President Lunsford where there was a need. “We realized we have an older population, and with the nursing field, we have application here to be employed locally at one of our two hospitals in Longview,” Allen said. “That benefits people locally. You don’t have to go to Caterpillar, Boeing or some-

where away from here. You can be from here, get an education here and find a job here. That builds community.” Because of his own experience, Allen is passion-ate about students being involved in the Longview community, and he suggests they ask themselves some questions. “As a student, do you want to make a differ-ence?” he said. “Do you want to have a posi-tive effect on your school? Are you here to help

LeTourneau and the community, or are you here to just get a degree and get out? We need more stu-dents to be involved in the community.” Allen says what matters is that students consider the contributions they can make when they incorpo-rate their abilities with an expanded knowledge to make a difference, even in their local community. “Dr. Lunsford has said, ‘Every great city needs a great university,’” Allen said. “That’s LeTourneau.” n

For 36 years, Dr. Paul Kubricht has promoted brotherhood at LeTourneau University as the advisor of the Alpha Omega Society. In the future, his name

will be linked to scholarship of more than an academic meaning. AO men will find the burden of securing a Christian education a little lighter, thanks to an open endowment started by former AO member Steve Iffland and his wife Tess. Kubricht’s service with AO began when he was “a brand-new professor” in Fall 1974 when the pre-vious AO advisor, English professor Ralph Gilbert, asked him to think about helping him co-sponsor the society. They worked together for many years, and Kubricht took charge of the group after Gilbert died. “A student named Merle Stoltzfus was the (society) president at the time. He and some of the other guys came to my office to visit with me and see if I was the ‘right kind of material for AO,’” Kubricht said. Stoltzfus would later become an LETU trustee. Kubricht was approved and settled in to watch the society, as well as the student body, grow over the years. In the early ‘80s, when the Ifflands at-tended, AO even built what Kubricht still calls the “new” brick house on campus where the society brotherhood could live together. In honor of the society’s 50th anniversary on campus this summer, the Dr. Paul Kubricht (Alpha Omega) Endowed Scholarship was announced at a time when many of the society brothers were on campus to celebrate the reunion. “We are giving honor where honor is due,” Tess Iffland said. “Dr. Kubricht has been a wonderful mentor — a man with so much wisdom and heart. We’re very fortunate he was the sponsor of Alpha Omega for the past 30 years.” Kubricht’s leadership was also a gift to the com-munity at large. “The guidance we received here left such an imprint on us,” Iffland said. “We had some wonderful experiences here, and so when we

got a chance to connect back to LeTourneau and help students who were financially strapped, more so than when we were here, we wanted to do it.” Kubricht is starting to see sons of an earlier generation of AO alumni come through, including current AO president Logan Iffland. Kubricht calls each of them “a blessing to the house. They offer a continuity and perspective to the society.” Part of that common denominator over the years is the desire to “come together as a broth-erhood.” AO has a chaplain in charge of weekly devotionals, a vice president who plans social events, an intramural director to organize teams and a member to coordinate community activities chosen each semester. The men’s annual dues are earmarked for missions, either for someone they know or to help one of their own go on a trip. “To watch these freshmen boys mature into seniors who take on leadership roles has been very rewarding,” Kubricht said. “Sometimes I don’t think they even realize what is happening, and then I see God working through them in His omniscient way to help them develop and grow into men after His own heart.” Tess acknowledges that she and her husband gave the Kubricht Scholarship “a good start,” but she is encouraged and hopeful that others can contribute and add to it over time. “People our age are looking for ways to be connected to something bigger than themselves,” she said. “We hope this endowment gives current students and alumni an opportunity to give to something bigger that will last long after their time as students at LETU is done.” While the intent is to help an AO student get through college, the after-effects reach even further. “We wanted to honor the Alpha Omega society of brothers who have meant so much to us through the years,” Iffland said. “That society has been the glue that brought us back to LeTourneau and that’s what gave us the good feelings of unity we have had.” n

Jovial laughter and talking could be heard down the hallway at the Tegron Company Christmas party. It was in full swing that evening by the time brothers Dennis and Steve Voelzke arrived. They

had just returned to Longview directly from a trade show in California. Dennis, at 35, was Tegron’s chief executive officer. Steve, younger by five years, was the company vice president. The year was 1999. It had been a tough year for the company which had renamed and rebranded itself as “Tegron,” a play on the word “integrity.” The launch of the new name went well, and Dennis even paid Steve a rare compliment when he announced at the party what a great job his brother had done that year. The company had received the National Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics and had opened a new operation in Waco. The brothers had worked tirelessly together to grow their business after buying out a third partner six years before in an amicable agreement. No one at the Christmas party could have imagined that two days later Dennis would be in a car accident that would leave him in a coma. He never regained conscious-ness. He died on Christmas Eve.

Dennis had been with the company since 1986. Steve joined the firm when he finished college in 1988. The brothers knew how to work together, beginning with their family’s farm in South Dakota. “We’d always worked together,” Steve said of his brother. “Even growing up, we had businesses together. We cut trees, raised sheep and did chores. Dennis was very industrious, hardworking. We always have been entrepreneurial.” Steve said his parents instilled in their children a strong sense of independence. “When I was 15, I was on my own financially cutting trees,” Steve said. “When I finally left for college, our dad took over the tree-cutting business Dennis and I had built. “Of the four of us kids, we all had a good work ethic,” Steve said, referring to his and Dennis’ older sister, Shelly, and older brother, Doug. “Dennis was always the brains and most industrious of the family, though. Dennis attended Oklahoma State University in Okmul-gee, where he got his degree in electrical design. “Dennis was smart, serious and motivated, always driven. He was a list guy. He kept lists of everything; he was so organized. But the way he was smart, he was still fun to be around. You could grow from being around him. And he had a heart for people.” When Dennis died, he had only been married to his wife, Julie, for about 18 months, but Steve said he knew they were the best months of his life. Dennis had renewed a relationship with the Lord about two years before he met Julie. The Dennis L. Voelzke Foundation was established from his estate by his family to honor his memory and to provide scholarships for students. “Dennis had a big heart for the underdog,” Steve said. “He felt for people who didn’t have a lot of funds in college." Voelzke Scholarships are awarded based on merit, need, citizenship and moral character to students with outstanding potential who intend to pursue careers in en-gineering, engineering-technology or computer science. The first Voelzke Scholarship was awarded in the Spring of 2001, initially targeted to benefit students at Dennis’ alma mater, OSU. However, after Tegron hired several LETU graduates and provided students with in-ternships, they found LETU students were a good fit with the company’s mission and work ethic.

Steve Voelzke and Family

In one of Dennis’ last e-mails sent to a coworker, he wrote: “Dream huge and have faith. Remain true to your commitments to deliver the best, and never lose hope, no matter what happens. Set your sights high. God has no limits, so why should you?” – Dennis Voelzke, 1964-1999

“We decided LETU was where we wanted to place the scholarships permanently,” Steve said. The move freed them of much of the administrative burden and costs as-sociated with awarding the scholarships. “I believe the endowed scholarship is a much better vehicle for us to memorialize Dennis,” Steve said. “The family was unanimous that it was the best way to go. We are better stewards of this foundation money because we can put it into something that lasts forever.” And as tragic as the end of Dennis’ life was, it was a beginning for four others because Dennis was an organ donor.

“Four people lived because of Dennis,” Steve said. “One man in Dallas had been praying for healing, not expect-ing that on Christmas Eve he would get the call to come in on Christmas Day for a heart transplant. We still have a relationship with him to this day.” Steve serves on the Board of Trustees for LeTourneau University. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Longview and have two children, Alex, 18, and Savannah, 15. And while he says business has never been as much fun as it was when Dennis was his partner, he has confidence that he will see him again one day in heaven. n

BEN Y. MARCH Vice President of University Development “It’s not just a one-way street.” Perhaps that’s not the first adage that comes to mind when giving to an institution (or anything) is concerned. But Ben March views university development as a means of blessing both donors and recipients. Being conscious about making sure donors receive as big a blessing as the recipient comes not from thank-you notes or gifts, but from thoughtfully finding what delights them individually. Like any good relationship, it requires listening. And it’s precisely why at LeTourneau University, a gift is not just a piece of paper with a bank routing number on it, or a scholarship that’s set up to keep on giving just for the sake of it. It’s personal. “We see ourselves as facilitators – of academic programs, of students’ future careers as salt and light in the work-place,” March said. “And we’re connectors to our constituents. They have needs as well, so we listen and discover what donors care about and then connect them with what they really want to give to.” March joined LETU in January 2009, bringing decades of sales and development experience, most recently at Baylor University and the Baylor Health Care System Foundation in Dallas. LETU’s mission, as well as its inventive students and their needs, motivates him to seek support for the university, day in and day out. Especially in today’s economy, March has scholarships on his mind, guiding the focus of the development staff to alleviate students’ debt on graduation day – in hopes that as each student moves their tassel to the other side of their mortarboard, a blessing is transferred to those who supported them.

SCOTT FOSSEY Senior Director of Development It’s not unlike Scott Fossey to arrive at his on-campus office in the morning with make-up on, left over from his first gig of the day. After all, he starts every weekday as the morning weather anchor in the television news industry at Tyler CBS affiliate KYTX-TV. As for his off-camera day job, Fossey joined LETU’s development staff this summer, after serving as director of development for the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler and as president and chief development officer at a private, K-12 Christian school. He has worked with community leaders in the East Texas area to raise more than $10 million for nonprofit healthcare and academic entities. At LeTourneau, Fossey oversees annual giving, major gifts, gift planning and corporate and foundation development. And in every area, he looks for the intersection of interest and need. “Development and fundraising are all about relationships,” Fossey said. “For supporters blessed with material means – as our mission and vision fits what they want to do – we can connect peoples’ dreams with LeTourneau and together, with a singular vision, we can make things happen.” Fossey earned his MBA from LETU’s School of Graduate and Pro-fessional Studies in 2009. He was impacted by his instructors’ faith walks and was impressed by the Christian spiritual component in each course. Now he fuses faith into fundraising. “It is our mission to establish that relationship and figure out the faithful passion of each supporter and find the place that their sup-port can best impact students and in turn, the world.”

RITA COURSON Admin. Assistant to the Vice President of University Development Walk through the front doors of the University Development office on any given day. Now listen. You’ll hear Rita Courson visiting with an LETU alumnus – or maybe a donor that happened to have crossed paths with LETU earlier in life. It’s immediately clear this isn’t a first-time conversation between a constituent and an office assistant. This is a personal, long-distance relationship played out over the phone lines between Courson and a donor with whom she’s kept in touch year after year. It’s a decades-long conversation. After 36 years working in the same department, Courson has seen a serious amount of change. When she began in 1974, the LeTourneau College Fund office was located across the street. Years before that, as a little girl, Courson’s family rented barrack space on campus. Now, the campus is filled with buildings for which she has coordinated gifts and buildings named after people she has person-ally kept in touch with long after the ground-breaking ceremonies were done. However, her enthusiasm for LETU individuals isn’t just a long-dis-tance relationship. She and her husband, both classic car enthusiasts, are big supporters of the current students in LETU’s Auto Society and assist with their annual car show.

While LeTourneau University was once her actual home address, it has never stopped being her home. And to Courson, it’s all about the people her home brings together, year after year.

Page 15: NOW Magazine - Fall 2010

JIM HUGHEYDirector of Community Development Try to count the conversations Jim Hughey has had in the past 18 years about LeTourneau University, and you may want to give up somewhere around the 30,000 mark. Aside from the fact he’s a natural people-person, he credits his commitment to community involvement to the very thing he sees as the ever-revolving axis that keeps LeTourneau University spinning. “People give to people,” Hughey said. “You can never overvalue relationships; they are the heartbeat of this university.” When he does something, he does it all the way. Hughey is not only investing in lives, he’s investing in the community – literally. He continually works to revitalize Longview’s downtown area as the chairman of the One Hundred Acres of Heritage / Urban Main Street Advisory Board and leader of Longview’s Urban Main Street program. In one of his many key efforts as a liaison between donors and students, Hughey coordinates the Presidential Scholarship Fund, which provides annual scholarships to deserving students from the East Texas area. As he connects local sponsors with local students, he clearly sees the draw of giving back to LETU. “I love giving people the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than any one of us – to help a student become someone who can change the world.”

MARTHA STEEDDirector of Alumni and Parent Relations They say you can’t understand someone until you’ve walked a mile in their moccasins. Well, Martha Steed has walked several when it comes to alumni and parents. As a LeTourneau University parent (of current soph-omore, Brady) and School of Graduate and Professional Studies alumna, she totally gets it: the anxiety of sending a student to college, the work it takes to graduate with an LETU diploma and the joy of lifelong connec-tions between former students. Steed travels throughout the country visiting with alumni and meeting current students’ parents, and she can’t hear enough about their LETU experiences. “I love to connect with alumni and hear their stories,” Steed said. “And meeting other parents – I’ve always known LeTourneau has the best students ever, and now I know why.” Another title you could give her is that of “homecoming queen,” since she plans homecoming activities and reunions every year to help gradu-ates reconnect with their alma mater. She attends all graduations and takes great pride in welcoming each graduating class as they enter into the LETU Alumni Association. After her first year as director of Alumni and Parent Relations, she is kicking off the launch of the revitalized LeTourneau Alumni Association,

from which the funds from lifetime members will set up an endowment to fund alumni events. Steed brings people together based on their shared past, to shape the future of not only the university, but each individual.

BRYAN BENSONDirector of Gift Planning and Endowed Scholarships Bryan Benson has worked at LeTourneau University since 1979, first as a faculty member in the aviation department and later as the alumni director, all before working with donors. But no matter the job title, for three decades his main focus has been the people – in the cockpit, earning the degree or receiving the scholar-ship fund. (And he has three decades of entertaining LETU stories – just ask!) These days, Benson’s main focus is helping people plan estate-related gifts and split gifts (those that sup-port the university both in life and in perpetuity.) He also aims his efforts at encouraging donors to give endowed scholarships that generate yearly awards – that’s because he wants working families to receive all the assistance possible, making an LETU education a reality for their sons and daughters. However, it is a love for relationship building that keeps him actively engaging with LETU supporters and alumni – out of his fervent enthusiasm about what he views as his ministry. “I love to get out and get in the homes and work-places of LeTourneau graduates,” Benson said. “And after 31 years here, I have seen countless life-long lessons that are inspiring, have seen lives mature and be molded.”

RANDY YEAKLEYDir. of Research, Corp. and Foundation Giving Step into Randy Yeakley’s office, and the first thing you spy (other than map imagery everywhere) is a hat rack filled with more types of fedoras, caps and berets than you’ve ever seen in one place (at least, one work-place.) Chat for a few minutes, and you’ll realize it sums him up pretty well: One man, many hats. After five years at LeTourneau, Yeakley juggles his time writing proposals, communicating with foundations around the world and doing development research. He is primarily supporting what he believes in – students’ global-service learning at a Christian school that backs up its beliefs. Every day, he represents their tireless research and project work to the organizations that can further empower their projects and ideas. Yeakley writes grant proposals to foundations and corporations and serves as a point person for senior design teams looking to raise money to fund their projects. In addition to his development work, Yeakley also serves as an adjunct faculty member for LETU’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies. With a background in grant writing for local and community health care, he recognizes peoples’ needs and desires, and solves the puzzle of pairing them up. And nothing gives him greater satisfaction at work than when he finds the perfect fit. “When we find a foundation that has a funding inter-est that lines up with something we’re doing here, I like to see those matches between donors and student projects on campus,” Yeakley said.

KENDA BEDFORDDirector of Annual Giving and Stewardship This fall, Kenda Bedford assumed the role of director of annual giving and stewardship after working in LETU’s Development office for over two years. In addition to her new responsibilities of coordinating donor steward-ship and communications, she serves as the advisor for Student Foundation and heads up the student Phona-thon, where current students call year-round to raise support as well as connect with and encourage alumni and friends of the university. Gifts raised through the Phonathon support the LeTourneau University Annual Fund — Student Scholarships. “What excites me most about being part of the Devel-opment office is furthering the relationships the uni-versity has forged with its alumni and donors, and, also, reconnecting old friends with the university,” Bedford said. Not only is Bedford a university employee, but she is also a parent (her daughter, Christine, is a psychol-ogy major.) This contributes to her enthusiasm about current students connecting with the broader picture of LeTourneau, particularly through personal conversations with donors and alumni through the student Phonathon. “When I listen in on the calls between students and alumni, it’s so fulfilling to hear these two diverse groups from different areas of the country come together for a common cause, an excellent Christ-centered education.”

KENDALL HARPERAssistant for Database Management

Kendall Harper has interacted with LETU alumni and donors for 28 years and counting. She served as the alumni assistant for the majority of that time and now manages key donor information. She remembers tears filling her eyes during one of the many fall convocation ceremo-nies she has attended, thinking, “I

love this place; just the whole meaning of it – the pur-pose of training the students to be godly people and do their job for the Lord. We have so many staff and faculty members that really make an impact on students’ lives.”

JENNY FOSTERCoordinator of Development

As a cheerful, central contact in University Development for over two years, Jenny Foster is described as the human equivalent of sun-shine. She provides coordination and support for the entire Develop-ment team and fosters a sense of community.

GAIL RITCHEYAssistant to the Director of Alumni and Parent Relations

As the primary support for the university’s alumni and par-ent communications and events, Gail Ritchey has the inside scoop. She’s an LETU alumna, mom of two grown children and the wife of School of Aeronautical Science Dean (and LETU alumnus) Fred Ritchey.

EBBY CHILDRESSAssistant to Sr. Dir. of Development

and Special Events Coordinator She may be the newest addition to the LETU Development staff, but Ebby Childress isn’t new to LETU. She is an LETU alumna and a Longview native with a decade of LETU staff experience working in the School of Graduate and Profes-sional Studies. Childress now pro-vides administrative support to the senior director of Development and works to promote awareness of university giving opportunities through LETU friends and supporters. n

Spring 2011 will be the 50th anniversary of

women on campus! The technical school that

R.G. and Evelyn LeTourneau started shortly

after World War II became a college in 1961

and began admitting female students. On

this page is a photo from a 1961 issue of

the NOW magazine showing the first five

women co-eds at the college. If anyone has

information on where they are now, please

get in touch with us at [email protected]. We

would love to get in touch with them!

If you have any good vintage photos of life

on campus, especially from around the

early 1960s when women were living on

campus in “WRH,” the Women’s Residence

Hall, and you are willing to share them

with your alma mater, please send us

scanned images to [email protected].

You may see some of your photos in future

issues of the magazine or in an online

photo gallery. We are also interested

in hearing from any of the first female

students and graduates from 1961-1965. Vintage

ANONYMOUS DONOR GIVES $5 MILLION ENDOWMENTAn anonymous donor has given a $5 million endowment to LETU to provide scholarships specifically for home-schooled students. It is believed to be the single largest endowment for home-school scholarships ever established at any college or uni-versity anywhere. Fifteen incoming freshmen students are receiving the gift this semester, with opportunity to renew annually. The number of home schooled students at LETU has risen in the past 13 years from 2 percent of the incoming student population in 1997 to 19 percent in the incoming class for 2010.

NSF AWARDS $1.6 MILLION IN ENGINEERING GRANTSThe National Science Foundation recently awarded nearly $1.6 million in grants for three separate engineer-ing projects: Materials Joining: NSF awarded $798,823 for upgrading LETU’s materials joining engineering lab for research and education, under the direction of Dr. Yoni Adonyi. Upgrades include a complete overhaul of the electrical wiring to the laboratory, increasing the capacity needed to op-erate complex equipment used in the lab for joining advanced engineering materials. Completion of the project is expected by Fall 2011. Retention: NSF awarded about $500,000 over the next five years to support retention of first-year students majoring in engineering and

engineering technology. Under the direction of Alan Niemi and Robert Warke, the “First-Year Initiatives for Retention Enhancement” or FIRE grant expands on a coordinated men-toring program for first-year students with a new, two-course freshman sequence that exposes students to real-world engineering practices. In addition to faculty and peer men-tors, industry mentors will broaden students’ perspective of job opportu-nities in engineering. ACL Research: NSF awarded $300,000 over the next three years for further research to develop a comput-er model that may change how knee stability is currently assessed. Under the direction of Dr. Roger V. Gonza-lez, it could also allow for potentially transformative changes in the current preventive, treatment and rehabilita-tion practices prescribed for injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

NEW MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERINGLETU received accreditation approval to launch a new Master of Science in Engineering program. The new resi-dential, research-oriented graduate engineering program allows students to continue their undergraduate research and complete a master’s with another year of studies. The M.S. in Engineering has a common core, followed by specialized engineering courses and a thesis in the areas of electrical, mechanical, biomedical,

As Dr. Viktor Roudkovski stepped to the podium in July to present his two professional papers at the International Society of Biblical Literature in Tartu, Estonia, he reflected on how far his moth-

erland had come in the past few decades. The bread, butter and milk lines were gone, thanks to an influx of capitalism and free enterprise. Also, he had succeeded in leaving the Soviet Republic to pursue his true calling as a writer and scholar — not the trade he had spent three years studying at Techni-cal and Industrial College. He wondered if teachers had finally stopped deriding Christians in the classroom. He hoped so, but he is grateful that his children, Nikolas and Viktoria, would not have to live that way. The 36-year-old assistant professor of biblical stud-ies also had the unique opportunity of returning and speaking to family members and their church friends about LeTourneau University. He said he had a hard time spelling it in his native language, but everybody in the congregation could tell how much the university meant to the naturalized American citizen. Growing up in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in the shadow of the Tian Shan mountain range that extends to the Himalayas, Roudkovski dreamed of being a hockey player who would someday beat the Americans. He had been told Americans were “greedy, mean, always ready to start wars; and that they thought they were better than us,” he said. Upon following his brother to the States in 1993 for school, “my opinion definitely changed,” he said. Roudkovski was taught atheism in the Communist classroom and that religion was “a threat to Commu-nism.” However, his upbringing, and that of his parents, made him unpopular and, at times, ostracized in his own country. “I was very unusual because I was born into a Christian family,” Roudkovski said. His father was an evangelical minister and a school teacher. His mom taught Com-munist Economics at the university level. “I lived in two societies — one at school and one at home,” he said. “We tried to be good witnesses, and we’d tell people we were Christians if they asked, but generally Christianity was looked down upon.” Because Roudkovski so despised being “put in the box of religion” at such a young age, he did not make a conscious effort to follow Jesus Christ until he was 17 years old.

Defending Christianity Dr. Victor Roudkovski

“In the classroom, I try to stress that Christianity is not a religion, but a way of life,” he said. “Jesus didn’t call us to be religious. He called us to be loyal and faithful to Him.” Roudkovski’s doctoral dissertation sets Jesus against the corrupt Temple establishment — a viewpoint Roudkovski continued to explore on his trip to Tartu where he present-ed to one of the largest gathering of biblical scholars in the world. This opportunity marked him as LeTourneau’s first professor to represent at this event. Roudkovski’s personal spirituality began in earnest when he met a group of missionaries from Australia. Shortly thereafter, he left for Mueller College in Australia “mostly to better my English.” Several semesters later, when that government declined to recognize his student visa, he continued his studies on the Fiji Islands attending the South Pacific Missionary Training Center in Suva. In the afternoons he worked in the sugar cane fields to pay his way. “This was a formative time in my life,” he said. “I knew God had called me to a ministry of some sort, but I didn’t know what it would be. I was very open to opportunities.” His next step took him to the Deep South to study Bible at Blue Mountain College in Mississippi. From there he attended New Orleans Theological Seminary where he met his wife, Melanie (who was also pursuing her doctorate). New Orleans changed him forever. That’s where he became a fan of the New Orleans Saints football team, got married, saw the birth of his two children and applied for U.S. citizenship. Roudkovski has called himself a Russian-American since his ceremony in 2006. “Citizenship was an important step in my journey,” he said. “It was not an easy decision, but after living here for a while, it was something I felt I needed to do, and I’m proud of it.” He’s also proud of how nobly he de-fended his new homeland against anti-American sentiment while visiting his family on his trip to Moscow. Roudkovski continues to be amazed at the number of churches he passes every day. There are 150 in Longview alone. “I work with the most wonderful people,” he said. “I learn continually from my colleagues, and I get to share my passion for the Bible with students.” Roudkovski has been a full-time professor at LETU for the last three years. “It is a privilege and a responsibility to introduce students to Christian concepts, as well as the worldview through bib-lical literature,” he said. “It is important because it impacts them for the kingdom of God.” n

As the little wheelchair bumped along the rocky ter-rain, 15-year-old Lauren Bally’s heartbeat quick-ened. Her steps faltered a little and, just before her 6-minute trek pushing 8-year-old Samuel Walls

was complete, she began to feel the effects of the noonday Texas sun beating down on her neck. The good news was she was steps away from an air-conditioned building at Christian Heritage School in Longview — not performing the task in Thika, Kenya, as LeTourneau University students did this past summer. Bally and her schoolmates have volunteered their able service to help LeTourneau University students collect ob-jective outcomes measures with a goal of determining the efficiency of pediatric wheelchairs, now being used in devel-oping countries. The team, led by LETU assistant professor Karen Rispin, will analyze data collected from using Regency Pediatric Wheelchairs developed and distributed by Joni and Friends, the foundation started by Joni Earickson Tada. The LETU student research team will also make comparisons to the pediatric wheelchair developed by the Association of Physically Disabled in Kenya. The research goal is to deter-mine the functionality of both chairs in regard to measuring energy cost, maneuverability and psycho-social parameters as a way to inform prescription and justify spending. “As a missionary kid growing up in Kenya, I saw a lot of inappropriate donations that couldn’t be used by the people they were donated to,” Rispin said. “People in the States would feel good about themselves, but they would give away something that really wasn’t helpful. And that’s something that always troubled me.” Rispin co-wrote a grant with Dr. Roger Gonzalez of LETU’s LEGS program, a research program that provides low-cost prosthetics to amputees in developing countries. After work-ing with science students to provide outcomes measures for LEGS, Rispin was challenged to find an additional assistive device for which she and her team could provide outcomes measures. Doors have opened to do so for wheelchairs ap-propriate for children living in low-income countries. “I approached Joni and Friends and found out that they’d just begun making and distributing the Regency pediatric wheelchair and were very interested in obtaining research data that would let them know how well it works in low income countries,” Rispin said. “Then doors opened to do this research with Bethany Kids (Relief and Rehabilitation) in Kenya and, in the process, provide the disabled children they work with at Joy Town Primary School with better quality wheelchairs.” Before Rispin and students Rachel Follingstad, a senior kinesiology major, and Elizabeth Richardson, a sophomore biology major, visited Kenya this summer, they had already been working to raise funds to ship 45 wheelchairs donated by Joni and Friends to Joy Town. “A lot of the children with cerebral palsy can’t self propel very well, but spina bifida kids can, depending on how far down the spinal cord their disability reaches,” Follingstad

said. “The ones who can self propel do, but they often don’t have wheelchairs that fit them, so it’s more dif-ficult than it should be. Another child may push them, but the wheelchairs don’t always have adequate sup-port for the children with cerebral palsy.” Children coping with ill-fitting wheelchairs was only part of the reality Follingstad and Richardson witnessed in Kenya. The other side was a picture of hope. "The school is the best possible place for these children to be, because many of their families could not provide the proper care for their special needs," Follingstad said. “In Kenya, most of the schools are not set up to mainstream disabled children,” Rispin said. “If you have a child with a disability, they usually can’t go to school unless they go to a boarding school for children with disabilities. Most of these are kids who would be main-streamed over here. These are very bright kids. Most are normal mentally but have physical handicaps.” Because these special needs students often must wait until someone finds them, and then tells their parents about the school, the average age per grade is slightly older than in the United States, Follingstad said. But these disabled students still possess a positive spirit. “They are much better off here than if they were left in a corner at home,” Follingstad said. “It is much better than other alternatives.” Like her professor, Follingstad is also a missionary kid who grew up in Kenya. She said this is the kind of proj-ect that drew her to transfer to LETU from a school in California. “The fact that an undergraduate could do this kind of research work and make a difference without having graduated was really a cool thing to me.” Hands-on research is also what drew Richardson to Longview from Anchorage, Alaska. Follingstad has already been accepted into Texas Woman’s University’s Physical Therapy program where she foresees three years of school and then paying off loans. “After that, either short-term or long-term, I would love to be doing something with a school like Joy Town,” Follingstad said. “Just being there this summer definitely made me realize the need, and there are many exciting opportunities there to serve.” Richardson was origi-nally intent on pursuing medical school and especially in serving through the LEGS program when she got to LeTourneau. “I was interested in getting out into the world and doing some-thing to benefit others,” she said. But now

she said she also sees the benefits of outcome research. “It’s helped me realize you can be involved in people’s lives from a lot of different angles.” Richardson completed her credit for the special topic course in biology for Wheels. Follingstad is now the veteran, training new recruits like dental school hopeful Taylor Gey-man in research this semester. “This is actually applied knowledge,” Geyman said. “And you’re helping people in real ways. It’s not like many other research projects.” Rispin plans to have him shadow Joy Town’s dentist when they return to Kenya this summer, since the children also have unique dental issues. Rispin knows the class is more about a special calling than a course credit. Not only does it include two semesters of research and a summer trip overseas, it is also self-funded. “The students really go way over and above with this,” Rispin said. “They get more undergrad research credit hours than they need. They’re going over and above academically.

They’re going over and above financially. These students are people with a real heart to serve. They’re special people.” After sending letters to 100 friends and family members and giving presentations at area service clubs, the students are also improving their public relations skills. “Many research projects have grants, but not many government granting agencies fund things like this,” Rispin said. “To do this, you really have to have a passion to make a difference. But the cool thing about this is that a little makes a big difference because there is such a need.” Richardson agreed the experience had immediate effects. “This trip gave me a bigger picture of the world,” she said. “I realized there are a lot of people who don’t live the same way I do. I also realized you don’t have to be super smart to change the world. God can use me now, not in 20 years when I’m older.” To find ways to give to this program, visit www.letu.edu/wheels. n
