A Letter From Your Lieutenant Governor

Hello Division 9 members! ! I hope that you all had a wonderful Halloween and Thanksgiving! I hope that you’re all getting ready for Christmas or Hanukkah, these holidays are my favorite time of the year. I can’t wait to see those of you that are going to Key Leader! Thank you to the clubs that have paid their dues, I’m very happy about all of the clubs that turned their dues in on time for the Early Bird Award. I’m so proud that almost all the clubs in Division 9 have increased their dues paid members this year! For the upcoming month, hold some fun projects to get in the spirit of the holidays! Go bell ringing for the salvation army, make cards for the soldiers, or wrap presents for the less fortunate. There’s so many unbelievable opportunities for service projects this time of year, so take advantage of all of them! I’m really excited to start prepping for the 2015 District Convention, which has the theme of Harry Potter! Also, in February there will be the district Eliminathon tournament, for all of the teams that won the interdivisional tournaments. November was a great success for Key Clubbers, so make December even better; it’s the busiest month of the year! !

-Tara Engelken Lieutenant Governor of Division 9

of the New Jersey District of Key Club International

Meet Some NJDB Members!

Meet LTG of Division 15 Darren Khong! Once you meet him you can’t not be friends with him! He’s quirky and one of a kind. He’s a senior at Millburn High School and is a percussionist in the marching band. He’s insanely creative and loves taking pictures at all of our events. You can always find him smiling no matter what!

Meet District Secretary Jacqueline Dragon! She’s without a doubt one of the hardest working people on the board, I could never imagine doing all the work that she does! She works really hard at school too—she’s a senior at Tenafly High School and is enrolled in mainly AP classes. She’s also part of the literary magazine and philosophy club at her school!

Meet LTG of Division 20 Harsh Patel! He’s like my brother of the board, plus we’re the same height. He’s always there if you need a laugh or smile. He’s a senior at Morris County School of Technology as well as a junior firefighter and EMT for Parsippany. On the board we have an on-going joke about how he’s always late due to his EMT work, but everybody loves Harsh!

International Update“As of November 2, 2014, Kiwanis-family Service Leadership Programs have raised US$3,172,466 in total funds, and the

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF season has just started! Don't forget to send in your hard-earned funds and make certain they are put to use to start saving lives. These funds will save or protect more than 1.76 million women and babies from maternal and neonatal tetanus. Key Club International has raised US$943 in

the last week.” !“All Trick-or-Treat funds must be mailed in, preferably with the

Kiwanis Family Giving Form (attached), byDecember 31st (postmarked), in order to receive the Trick-or-Treat for

UNICEF patch” !At International Convention 2015 in Indianapolis, the band Hello

Goodbye will be performing — even more of a reason to attend! !

“We are thrilled to tell you that the estimated number of babies who die every year from tetanus dropped from 58,000 in 2010 to 49,000 in 2013. Today there are 25 less babies dying every day from tetanus than there were just a few years ago.  This

kind of progress simply would not be possible without The Eliminate Project and Kiwanis International’s tremendous

generosity in supporting UNICEF’s work to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT).” !

-International Trustee Barry Seng of the New Jersey, Texas-Oklahoma,

and Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Districts

Club/Officer of the Month

For the month of October, High Technology High School has been awarded Club of the Month! They had meetings every week for the month of October, and now have more dues paid members than last year. Their club was the first to turn in their CMRF, and almost always has early CMRFs. They completed four service projects in October, and raised a whopping $2,500! I’m so impressed by that, and they also had almost 250 hours of community service this month. This club is doing an amazing job, and it definitely stems from the hard working officers.

The Officer of the Month is Red Bank Regional’s President Riana Katz! She’s been reaching out to me a lot this month to give me updates on her club, and they have a lot of great ideas and service projects. She is never afraid to ask for help when she or her club needs it. Under her supervision and with the help of her officers, RBR has established a website for their club which I am super excited about! Congratulations to Riana and High Technology for their accomplishments, keep up the great work!

Eliminathon Recap On Thursday, November 20th, Divisions 9&10 held an

interdivisional volleyball tournament at the Salvation Army in Red Bank from 4pm-7pm. All proceeds go to the Eliminate Project, so the

tournament is named “Eliminathon”. Each division (aor multiple divisions together) hosts a tournament and the winner of the

tournament goes to a state-wide competition in the winter. So, around February, the winners of the divisional Eliminathons will

compete against each other. The Division 9&10 Eliminathon went really well! We’re pleased to say that $353 was raised and 9 teams were present. The theme of the tournament was “America” so all teams chose a state and made a

name based off of it. High Technology had 4 teams, Red Bank Regional had 3, Keyport had 1, and MAST had 1. Thank you to

everyone that participated! Congratulations to the winners from MAST, “The Maine Event”, featuring our very own District Treasurer

Daniel McCormack! In second place was High Tech’s team, “Flor-da-win”! Good luck in the state competition MAST! I definitely had fun

and I hope that everyone who attended did too!

The winners of the tournament: MAST President James Abbaticchio, District Treasurer Daniel McCormack, MAST Vice President Matt Schilke, and general members David Valentino, and Leor Golan! Plus myself and MAST co-webmaster Mike Sosa.

November Board Recap The New Jersey District Board met from November 15th-16th for the November Board Meeting. The weekend was packed with lots of activities and information to discuss. All the committees met and had meetings to discuss old and upcoming activities. All the Fall Rally committees gave their final reports and we moved onto our new District Convention committees. I am really excited to announce that I will be chair of the Script Committee for District Convention! So I will be compiling all the speaking parts for the weekend from the district board. The District Programs Committee (chairs LTG Brooke and myself) announced that we will now move onto supporting the Hunger Is Organization for our advocacy project: Hunger in the United States. The District Project Steering Committee (chairs LTG Farwa and LTG Aleena) announced that now, thanks to the Eliminate Project, a baby dies every 11 minutes (instead of the original 9 minutes) from neonatal tetanus. The International Programs Committee (chairs LTG Nate and LTG Latifa) spoke about Key Leader.

We spoke about district elections which will begin in January. LTG elections are held between January and February and district executive officer elections will be held at DCON (after proper paper work has been turned in and contact with your LTG has been made). Please contact me if you are interested in running for any district position, the elections packet will be sent out very soon. We also spoke about ICON, which will be held in Indianapolis from June 23rd-July1st. The NJ District will make multiple stops, including Hershey Park and an amusement park in Ohio. People who attended the Kiwanis Family Conference in North Carolina from November 7th-9th spoke about the experience. Multiple International Trustees were there as well as International President Maria Palazzolo! They climbed mountains, had dances, and participated in bonding exercises. It sounded like a great experience and I wish I was able to attend! Overall, like all of our board meetings, the November meeting was a lot of fun and we have great things planned for District Convention in March!

On November 7th through November 9th 12 members of the NJ District Board went to Black Mountain, North Carolina to attend this year’s Kiwanis Family Conference; also known as

KFC. During this weekend there were members from Builder’s Club, Key Club, Circle K, and Kiwanis from all over the

country. Each person was assigned a “country” to be a part of and that country was their group for the entire weekend.

Friendships were made with people from all across the country, of different ages, and different positions in the K-Family organization. There were different activities done

between the family groups including skits being made and then performing them, and there were dances each night. On Saturday afternoon during the free time the NJ board

members hiked the infamous mountain and then went into the town. Later that day there was a boundary breaking

session for each country group. During these sessions, each person within the group opened up to one another about

themselves, it was a really great bonding experience. After a long but fun weekend, the NJ members took a flight home on

Sunday. The memories from this weekend will never be forgotten, along with the friendships that were made!
