WELCOME If you are new to St. Anthony of Padua Parish, please know how welcome you are to worship God with us. The motto of our parish is written in Latin over the front entrance: “The hardworking people of St. Anthony have built this Temple to the Lord.” We know that we have been blessed with one of the most beautiful church most people have ever seen and that the Lord demands more of those who have been given more. Our goal is to is allow the Lord to build with us a parish community of “living Stones” even more beautiful than the physical edifice in which we have the awesome privilege to worship Him. We would love you to become part of that building project!

PASTOR’S MESSAGE Don’t Skip the Advent Season Dear brothers and sister, As we are about to begin with the season of Advent, I would like to share with you what are

the liturgical norms from the Roman Missal regarding the observance of Advent. In number 39 we read the following: Advent has a twofold character, for it is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and likewise a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ's Second Coming at the end of time. The twofold character of the Advent Season is reflected in the prayers, readings and particularly in the prefaces which the Church provides for the celebration of the season. In the first stage, from the first Sunday until December 16, the Church urges us to the watchful expectation for that time when "He comes again in glory and majesty and all is at last made manifest" (Preface of Advent I). On each of the four Sundays, the lectionary readings focus our attention on: the return of the Lord; the conversation preached by the Baptist; the relation of the mission of John the Baptist and Jesus the Redeemer; and finally, on Mary, the Virgin Mother. From December 17 to the Eve of Christmas, the proper texts for each day recall the events "when he came" and prepare us more proximately to "rejoice at the mystery of his Nativity" (Preface of Advent II). The Church's understanding of the preparation for the coming of the Savior often is at odds with the popular culture of the day. It is not at all uncommon for our society — for secular and oftentimes economic reasons — to begin the "celebration" of Christmas with various sales, advertisements and decorations in the days immediately following Thanksgiving. our parish celebrations of the Advent Season have little to do with the eschatological preparation for the Lord's coming, and do, in fact, "buy into" the pre-Christmas

rather than the "pre-Parousia" character of the Advent Season. We must recall in our parish celebrations the fact that Advent is a period of expectation and preparation for the second coming of Our Lord Jesus. May this season of Advent renew in us our call to be ready and may this season help us to better celebrate Christmas, the coming of God as little baby at Bethlehem. God bless you. EVENTS OF OUR PARISH OUR DAY WITH MARY will be December 2. Joins us for this special celebration as we honor our lady and listen to her message.
