This month we are taking a look at Abdi-

kadir Aden, a 23 year old youth from

Garissa County. Aden is pursuing the gold

level of the Award as an Open Award

participant. Currently Aden has been

heavily involved in environmental aware-

ness and literacy campaigns in Garissa as

part of his Service Section for the Gold

Level. One of the milestones he has

achieved was the equipping of Yathrib

Primary School with an environmental li-

brary (the one and only existing environ-

mental library in North Eastern region) The

library is equipped with resources in dif-

ferent fields

of environ-

ment such as

water, en-

ergy, waste

management,

health, agri-

culture, biodi-

versity, cli-

mate change etc, the library’s main goal

is to empower the youth and children

with environmental knowledge for sus-

tainable development and a better fu-

ture. The initiative for the library forms

part of Aden’s achievement for the

UNEP Tunza for Children and Youth

and was made possible by the

support of UNEP, Kenya Organi-

zation for Environmental Education

(KOEE), UNICEF (Hand Wash Cam-

paign) and Garissa Municipal

Council through Garissa Youth Envi-

ronment Movement of which he is

the Technical Assistant.

The National Campaign

Against Drug Abuse Author-

ity ()NACADA) in continua-

tion with its mandate of

combating drug abuse held

a sensitization workshop in

Nakuru from 15th to 17th

November. Among some of

the deliberations in the

workshop was the need for

youth organizations to en-

gage more on issues affect-

ing the health of young

people, HIV & AIDS, alco-

hol and drug abuse and the

need for youth organiza-

tions to network and com-

plement one another in their

various . Also discussed was

the need to involve the

young people in the fight

against alcohol and drug

abuse and concentrate

more on the consumer than

supplier. The Presidents

Award Kenya was repre-

sented by Jinnarius Wam-

bugu and among some of

the youth organizations that

we present included:
