Key Club By: Amy Klass

Last month Key Club was asked to volunteer at Camp Fire USA’s annual haunted house. Camp Fire USA is one of the na-tion's lead-ing non-

profit youth development organizations. Their yearly haunted house fundraiser is put together and operated by teen members of Camp Fire USA. This year’s theme was “Bloody Hard Times” and consisted of nine different rooms ranging from the time periods of the Black Plague to Ancient Egypt to the Salem Witch Trials. Key Club members Amy Klass, Emily Klass, Carmen Delgado, Megan Powers, Taylor Thompson, Danielle Runyon,

Kayla Estes, Taylor Ragon, Ruben Aponte, Alexis Gilliam, Alexis Haggins and Faculty Advisor Ms. Arbelo all volunteered and dressed up as these scary characters. “It was

so much fun to dress up and scare people at the same time helping the community and gaining service hours!” said Key Club member Taylor Thompson. This is just one of the numerous service projects that the Key Club participates in. Key Club is an international, student-led organization which provides its members with op-portunities to perform service,

build character, and develop leadership. If you are interested in joining the fun and receiving community service hours, please see Ms. Ar-belo in C-6.

For the second year in a row, students from CFAA of KHS were recipients of the South-west Florida Water Management District (SPLASH) Mini-Grant in the amount of $4950.00. Students will be doing sediment core drilling in two lakes. CFAA/KHS is now officially a NASA Ex-plorer School. NASA invited selected teams to work with education specialists from NASA

centers in an effort to spark inno-vative science and mathematics instructions for students. NASA Explorer schools acquire new teaching resources and technology tools using NASA’s content, experts and other resources to provide exciting learning experi-ences for students. In October, KHS students celebrated a “Night Under the Stars” with Dr. Kevin MacKay. Stu-dents completed a hands-on activity and partici-pated in a discussion with Dr. MacKay. “This was a wonderful evening for our students,” said Mrs. Bradner.

Congratulations to our 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year, Lori Bradner.

She brings inspiration, motiva-tion, vision and integration into the world of science unique to those whom have gone before her. Lori’s inspirational style brings a sense of the drama within the scientific curriculum. She is always pumping up the rigor. Students are chal-lenged by her persistent style and are motivated to find an-swers but more importantly, their inner scientist. Mrs. Brad-ner encourages a freedom to think environment, constantly readjusting student vision with intended outcomes. Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Bradner finds extra-curricular activities that are exciting and relevant. Culinary students definitely do not let grass grow under their feet any day of the week at KHS. There are always cooking, planning, providing luncheons, attending conferences and putting KHS on the map. They attended the J & W Culi-nary Skills Day in Tampa in October. Their upcoming

project “Travel the World by Your Tastebud,” is cur-rently underway. This is an interna-tional culture and cuisine project offered to KHS Social Studies and Foreign Language classes. The objec-tives for this event include promoting an under-standing of people in different parts of the world; the cultural influences on the food that people eat and an awareness of how geography and climate affect the food that is available in different coun-

tries. It is sponsored by the Tony Cook Memorial Grant through American Institute for Foreign Study Foundation. The event will take place during 4th

and 5th periods in the Culinary Arts class-rooms on Tuesday, December 14. Admission requirements include canned or nonperish-able foods. The class that collects the most canned foods will receive a pizza party pro-vided by the culinary department in January, 2011. Check out their website http://kildayculinaryart.weebly.com/. Congratulations are also in order to Mrs. Kilday and the Culinary Arts students. They were

awarded a $400 mini-grant from the Polk County Florida Restau-rant and Lodging Association and were recognized at the PCFRLA Culinary Cele-bration Dinner. We Love you Culinary stu-dents and Mrs. Kilday and ap-preciate all of your hard work!

A school that has a school-wide Title I program must have a plan or policy to inform parents on how they become more involved in their student’s education. A compact helps carry out the plan and it was mailed to all student households on Novem-ber 1, 2010. There are three main parts to the Compact. The School Responsibilities section explains what ad-ministrators, teachers and school staff should do to

make school a positive place, the services provided and the opportunities for parents to get involved in their student’s education. The Parent Responsibili-ties section explains why it is important to provide a good place for studying and the importance of regularly checking student progress in addition to reviewing report cards. The Student Responsibili-ties section lists expectations that the student should place on themselves to insure success. These expectations include good attendance, preparation, completion of school work and show-ing respect to all within the school community. Please take the time to read and sign the Com-pact and return it to the front desk. Remember, you are always welcome in your student’s school. Teachers and other school staff want to work with you!

The NASA curriculum, developed and written by PCSB staff and USF/Coalition of Science Liter-acy (CSL) is currently be-ing field tested in twenty schools throughout the dis-trict. Twenty-eight middle school teachers are imple-menting the eleven middle school modules and two teachers at CFAA of KHS are implementing the nine high school modules. Twenty-eight sessions of professional development for the teachers

started in October, 2010 and will con-clude by February, 2011. Dr. Rod Brame, Science professor at USF Polytechnic is pro-viding all the pro-fessional develop-

ment sessions. The sessions take place on Saturdays and Monday evenings.

Our students participated in the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport Mass Disaster Exercise last month which was conducted in preparation for air carrier service at the airport. “It was a wonderful real life learn-ing experience for our students,” said Mr. Smith. About 50 students were victims and the remaining students got a front row seat as ob-

servers of the whole exercise. We received numerous compliments and thanks from the participating organizations such as Emergency Management of Polk County, Lakeland Airport, Lakeland Police, Polk Fire and EMS. “This is a credit to the great culture of commu-nity and service of CFAA/KHS,” said Mr. Smith.

Kaley Cragett started a mission last month to Pay it Forward. She asked three clubs at school to help her raise money for the Leuke-mia & Lymphoma Organi-zation/Light the Night Walk campaign in Novem-ber. They all turned her down as they said there wasn’t enough time. She didn’t take “No” for an answer. She raised over $200 on her own and par-ticipated in the walk. Thank you Kaley for Pay-ing it Forward. You are an inspiration to everyone!

This is my school; I open it wide to educate all students who step inside! I will practice a high level of respect for others and will dem-onstrate and maintain high ex-pectations of myself, my stu-dents and colleagues. This is my calling and I will not rest until every student at Kathleen High School receives my best!

Congratulations to KHS. We won the Sil-ver Star Award last month. School Media/Technology Program Award
