Save the Date! Mrs. DeWys Declares Declares Bentheim Elementary School~Volume 11, Issue 9 Welcome Mrs. Katie Harvey What’s New in Resource Room? This week was another great week. The students worked extra hard in all of their subject areas. We had the opportunity to add two new Café strategies to our board including: Use the Pictures, and Voracious Reading. It is important that the students are using the pictures to help them understand what they are reading, and also reading a lot to help them build their vocabulary. The students also started new guided reading books which they have been enjoying throughout the week. A few students moved on to new operations in math, and we did a couple Happy Dances. We were very excited! Have a great weekend!! Mrs. DeWys & Miss Compagner Picture Re-takes November 16, 2011 Smile pretty again! This will be the only day for picture re- takes. Mrs. Harvey graduated from Calvin College with a degree in Learning Disabilities. Some activities that interest Mrs. Harvey include: volleyball, which she coaches at Holland Christian, and running long distance. We are very excited to have Mrs. Harvey become part of our class, and we look forward to working with her each day. Please, look for a letter of introduction from Mrs. Harvey in the near future.

Welcome Mrs. Katie Harvey

What’s New in Resource Room? This week was another great week. The students worked extra hard in all of their subject areas. Young 5s/First Grade

3rd Grade Reading: This week we continued practicing our

Daily 5 routines and yellow book phonemic awareness activities. We started new guided reading books called Frog Knows Best, and Froggy Goes to School.

Writing: We started a new writing project called “Giving Thanks.” We brainstormed a person or animal we are thankful for and 5 reasons why we are thankful for that person or animal. Word Study: This week we learned about the /ou/ sound and how it can be spelled with two different spellings: ou and ow.

Math: We worked really hard to review and practice two-digit and three-digit subtraction with regrouping.

Fourth Grade Reading : This week, we practiced Daily 5 and continued reading Mouse and the Motorcycle. We also added to our Visualization book with more pictures and descriptions.

Writing: We continued working on the “Changing the World” projects. We did a lot of researching and began the scripting.

Word Study: This week we talked about the long /i/ sound as in life, and the long /e/ sound as in see. We discussed how the long /i/ and /e/ sounds can be spelled different ways.

Math: We continued working on two-digit and three-digit multiplication. We worked very hard on these. Reading: This week, we continued yellow book

phonemic awareness skills, and worked on our Daily 5 routines. We also started a new guided reading book called Froggy Goes to School. We used a lot of expression in this book and really enjoyed it. Writing: We started a new writing project called “Giving Thanks.” We brainstormed a person or animal we are thankful for and 5 reasons why we are thankful for that person or animal. Word Study: This week we worked with a rhyme called “Fuzzy Wuzzy.” We identified the /z/ sound in the rhyme with word such as fuzzy, was, and bears.

Fifth Grade Reading: This week, we finished reading Island of the Blue Dolphins, and we also watched the movie. During the movie we filled out a comparison worksheet.

Writing: We started a new writing project called “All About Me.” We started brainstorming ideas for the introduction, skills/talents, special trip, and future paragraphs that we will later publish. We also started drafting our ideas.

Word Study: This week we started Unit 10 and talked discussed the /o/ sound with the spelling patterns of au, aw, and a followed by l. Math: We are continuing to work hard on long division with remainders. This week we learned how to use the Livescribe and how it encourages us to talk out loud as we work through our division problems.

Reading: This week, we continued working on blue book and yellow book phonemic awareness skills, Zoophonics, and our Daily 5 routines. We also started a new guided reading book called The Best Pets Yet. We really enjoyed this book and all of the animals that were in it. Writing: We started a new writing project called “Giving Thanks.” We brainstormed a person or animal we are thankful for and 5 reasons why we are thankful for that person or animal.
