undulation of a wave. The Maxima does have a few features worth
noting. First, I like the big fenders and broad, powerful shoulders of this vehicle. Combined with the wide stance and optional 19-inch wheels, it gives the Maxima a firmly planted look.
The hood too is striking. Nissan refers to it as “catamaran styling,” and with its high sides, dipping toward a power bulge in the centre, this element hints at the power within.
The upturned headlights and wide front grille contribute to the Maxima’s bold first impression, and the high rear deck, LED combination taillights and wide-bore dual exhaust outlets add to its sporting element.
Inside, not much has changed for this model year, except for a few tweaks in illumination, trim and interior colour.
What also hasn’t changed is the Maxima continues to be offered as one well-equipped model – the 3.5 SV at $37,880. Three option upgrades – Premium, Sport and Navigation – can take it to $40K and beyond.
The base model, as you’d expect for the price, comes very well-equipped. Standard features include leather-appointed seats, heated in front, with eight-way power-adjust for the driver and four-way for the passenger; heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel (manual tilt/telescopic); multi-info system with seven-inch monitor; smart key with push-button start; dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents; AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA Bose audio system with speed-sensitive volume, two subwoofers (and centre channel) and steering-wheel-mounted controls; Bluetooth hands-free phone; power moonroof and more.
Aside from technology, it is the little touches that make the Maxima’s interior so inviting. The instrument panel and raised centre console are clean and uncluttered, with a nice use of chrome surrounds for the gauges, audio switches, vent knobs and rings. The metallic accents are an elegant contrast to the (optional) Atlantic cherrywood trim that I had on my tester.
Both the layout and ergonomics of the Maxima’s instruments and controls, not to mention choice of materials, show an Infiniti-like attention to detail. Which is high praise indeed, as I believe this luxury marque has some of the best interiors in the business.
Optional goodies for the Maxima include seat cooling (front seats only), power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, hard-drive navigation system, rearview camera, DVD playback, power rear sunshade, driver’s seat memory, 19-inch alloys and dual-panel moonroof.
The latter is a nice feature, with both panels combining to give the appearance that the roof is made entirely of black glass. Only the front panel opens, and dual power sunshades can be
drawn over both sections.Rear seats are spacious with plenty of
knee room, and come standard as 60/40 split fold. With the Sport and Premium packages, however, you get rear outboard bucket seats, with a pass-through replacing the split/fold function.
Paddle shifters are also available only in Sport and Premium trim. I’m scratching my head over this, as they should be standard fare in any sports sedan – especially one with a CVT.
Yes, the only transmission available on the Maxima is their now largely perfected Xtronic CVT. I’m typically not a fan of these, especially when accelerating hard, as the continuous wailing (at least until you get up to speed) can be annoying.
But that was early days for Nissan, and the current version is both responsive and smooth. In the Maxima, the Xtronic has a selectable Ds mode (drive sport) that improves performance through higher revs, automatic engine braking (for downshifting into a turn) and the ability to maintain engine speed during cornering.
And the nice, throaty exhaust note is a bonus. Acceleration is deceivingly quick, as the CVT is more linear than a conventional automatic. There’s no “kick” with each gear change.
Despite the Maxima’s brisk launch, I noticed minimal torque steer, which is a credit to the car’s engineering that has been fine tuned over so many years.
Also significant is the speed sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering, similar to that used on the 370Z. There’s good road feel, and it’s stable at highway speeds – yet it is also easy to

The interior of the 2012 Maxima is warm and inviting with abundant soft-touch materials, nice use of chrome and metallic accents and optional Atlantic cherrywood trim. Instruments and controls are clean and uncluttered.

manoeuvre in the big box parking lot.
According to Nissan, with new pricing announced for the 2012 Maxima, buyers can save up to
$1,920 over the outgoing model.Which I’m sure the company
is hoping will translate into more sales for this well deserving, but often overlooked sports sedan.

Classic car dealer Al Webster brought eight cars to the fall collector car auction in Toronto. Most were convertibles.
Webster knows what people want. One of the eight cars he offered for sale was an obsessively restored dark blue 1949 Mercury convertible. “I bought the car in California partially restored and with so many parts that it took three pickup truck loads to move,” the octogenarian dealer recalls. The car had sat apart for a decade after the restoration work stopped.
The Mercury convertible was painted a deep blue. Webster finished the restoration with a dark blue canvas top and a blue and white rolled and pleated interior. The results are stunning. Bidding on the car at peak Saturday auction time went to $85,000. But Webster wanted more. “You couldn’t possibly restore the car for that kind of money,” he says. He took the car home with him.
Convertibles cost little more to restore but can bring two to four times the money paid at auctions for hardtop models of the same car. A case in point was a nice driver-quality black 1950 Mercury coupe sold at the auction for
$15,950 plus a 10 per cent buyer’s fee.Convertibles and pickup trucks are
hot. Muscle cars: Not so much. “I had an off-the-frame restored Camaro SS with the 396 engine and full GM Canada documentation and it didn’t even bring a bid of $35,000 dollars,” he says.
But Al Webster knows that bidders recognize the 1949 Mercury as one of the most desirable collector vehicles and is confident that he will sell his pristine example for a more satisfactory price. His convertible already drew strong money at the auction. And a green 1949 Mercury pickup truck with black fenders also attracted at least two very qualified bidders who wanted it. When the gavel fell, the beautifully restored hauler sold for $73,700 plus buyer’s fee. Ford of Canada produced badge-engineered, Ford-based pickup trucks with the name Mercury beginning in 1946. Mercury trucks were not available for sale south of the border. The high auction price paid for this 1949 model could set a world record for a Mercury pickup truck of that vintage.
Three very rare convertibles would draw high bids at the auction. An ultra rare 1936 Cord front wheel drive convertible was a no sale after being bid to $105,000. Similarly, bidding for a 1934 Oldsmobile convertible coupe with side mount spare wheels in each front fender closed at $62,000 with the owner taking
it home. An equally rare 1940 Lincoln Zephyr convertible did sell at a hammer price of $64,350 plus the 10 per cent buyer’s fee.
At the other end of the scale, an unrestored but presentable 1963 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible went to a new home with a top bid of $4,510 plus buyer’s fee. This was a decent looking entry level collectible convertible in what looked like original white paint with rose colored leather interior featuring most luxury options.
“The collector vehicle market is all
over the place because of the economy but they are still a great investment,” says veteran classic car restorer dealer Art Carty, of Fawcett Motor Carriage in Whitby, On., east of Toronto. “It’s hard to tell what will sell and what won’t. Prices vary a lot.” He knows that the best case scenario is multiple bidders who all want to take the same collector vehicle home.
Canadian classic car collectors love convertibles and pickups

This 1958 Corvette roadster was beautifully presented and sold at auction for $57,700, plus 10 per cent buyer’s fee.
Seldom seen 1936 Cord convertible, one of the first production front wheel drive vehicles, did not sell with a final auction bid of $105,000.

He sold all the vehicles he brought to the auction, including a very rare 1923 Dodge ‘screenside’ pickup that drew a gavel price of $17,050 plus 10 per cent buyer’s fee. Other cars sold included a 1915 Model T runabout for $18,700 and 1956 Mercury hardtop for final bid of $15,125.
Also in the sold category was a red and black 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 convertible at $37,500, a Starmist Blue 1957 Ford Thunderbird convertible with optional hardtop at $41,800, a blue and
white 1958 Corvette roadster for $57,700, a dark green 1950 Ford convertible with tan leather interior for $22,000 and a well-optioned red 1963 Ford Galaxie XL convertible at $32,450, plus 10 per cent buyer’s fees.
Sellers are urged to represent their cars properly with any known problems or defects fully disclosed. But it is up to buyers to properly inspect vehicles being offered for sale at auctions, talk to the owners and get expert advice before making a bid. The condition and authenticity of old vehicles can vary greatly which significantly affects the value.
A restored 1955 Chevrolet BelAir two-
door sedan with a monster blower-equipped 454 cubic inch V8 engine and interior roll cage was apparently sold with a high bid of $32,000. The car had to be run through the auction again when it was explained that the ‘winning’ bidder did not have a bidder’s card and the sale was invalid. The car was run through the auction later and was a no sale with a high bid of $30,000.
Dealer Al Webster did sell some of the eight cars he was offering at the Toronto auction. His beautifully restored wood-clad 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline sedan sold for $36,850 plus buyer’s fee to a lady from Texas. “You never know who is going to buy your car and what they will pay at an auction,” he says.
He’ll be back for the Classic Car Productions spring auction in Toronto with more cars. For photos of auction vehicles and bid prices along with other information go to: www.ccpauctions.com

those in his workshop who haven’t had a recent eye check-up as to why. “It’s probably one of the most important factors in order to be able to drive safely.”
Mobility is another common concern as drivers age, affecting things like their ability to shoulder check before changing lanes or turning. These concerns are not inevitable, however, and proactive steps like exercise and yoga can help keep seniors flexible – and mobile – for a long time.
In addition to the physical changes drivers might face as they age, Gray also reviews changes in the rules and regulations with regards to driving and driver testing.
Significant improvements have also come to today’s vehicles, and workshop participants will explore some of these newer features and how they work, Gray notes.
Feedback from workshop participants has been great, and judging by the full chairs in the workshops, the information is appreciated. Often it’s simply a matter of reminding drivers of important facts that can be forgotten over years of driving. For example, a local study found that in crashes involving drivers age 55 or older who were solely at fault, the No.1 factor was speed, followed by inattention, then health issues, Gray says.
Even vehicle maintenance can play a part. A recent Bridgestone study suggested that up to 97 per cent of vehicles have improperly inflated tires, which can lead not only to increased wear on the tire and gas consumption but also cause reduced grip on the road.
“All of these things are really important for safe driving.”

To my surprise, after taking Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Relief #23 Ireally didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feelrested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleepapnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like amiracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS For 20 years Iwas waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would startnapping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell#23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life.Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS It is such a joy not having to usethe CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23,my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a
joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggestanyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. I was scared to go to bedand have an heart attack like my husband. After taking Bell #23 I can now sleep for 5-6 hours peacefully withoutgasping for air. A blessing. Suzie Weigel, 60, Chattanooga, TN No need to make claims. Bell is using100% truthful user testimonials and gives a refund guarantee.
Most snorers also have sleep apnea whichcauses being tired all day, high blood pressure, heartattacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats (Governmentwebsite). Millions suffer needlessly and most can stoptheir nightly ordeals first night. NPN #80027595.

We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100’s of testimonials with full names andtowns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some examples: Doctor suggested knee replacementafter all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee and lower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilageto thosemillions suffering needlessly like I did for 40 years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was givendrugs and injections all these years when a natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night.Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ONMy hip is 95% pain free. Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals.Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CAI tried another brand and pain came back. 2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again.Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ONCancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Cansquare dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK.For 32 years I cried barrels of tears. Was inand out of hospitals costing society tens of thousands of dollars. I have taken many thousands of pills that nearly killedme. Finally 3 bottles of Bell Shark Cartilage costing less than $100 stopped a lifetime of suffering without side effects.Eleanor Sauson, Shigawake, QCOthers write: Can walk again for hours…Climb stairs without hanging on torailing…First time in 15 years can sleep at night…Rheumatoid pain in joints down 90%, same for my sister.Hundreds more people on the Bell website.
This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for yearsI desperately tried everything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing was of anyreal help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage
that was specially processed to preserve the naturalactive ingredients. This is the kind we are now promoting. I realized thenthat there are over 50 million men and women that are battling the same illnessand getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we would not havethis ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens ofthousands of men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the American food industry. No sharks are caught because of theirbones/cartilage. Don’t let activists confuse you. Nick A. Jerch, President #1

Inheriting the flawless Ivory White car with a scant 6,000 km from his dad in the early 2000s, it didn’t stay in its original form for very long.
Around the same time, Low was also busy with another new toy that bit the 30-year-old with the modifying bug.
“It was from a game, called Gran Turismo,” Low says. “And then it started me making mod cars.”
The immensely popular racing simulator video game for the Sony PlayStation allowed players to purchase cars from almost any manufacturer and customize them to an incredible level of realism and detail. Want a Toyota Supra twin-turbo lowered to the ground with a towering racing spoiler on the
trunk and gold aluminum wheels? No problem.
Low wanted to take that concept and apply it to real life. It sounded easy enough – but during the early dial-up days of the Internet, online shopping hadn’t yet become the norm. Instead, he turned to the salespeople at
the isolated shops around town that mostly sold window tint or car stereos who helped him slap together some ill-fitting knock-off
body aero parts.“I didn’t have a good idea. I was just trying
out stuff and then after going, ‘Oh, what have I done?’”
As web use became more refined, so too did Low’s taste for car customization. Influenced by videos of import car tuning culture from Japan, he did a complete overhaul to his 240SX, which he exclusively calls by its Japanese name, the S13. In a matter of a few short years, virtually every part on the car has been replaced by high-end made-in-Japan variants.
The car now sports a sleek body kit coupled with adjustable suspension cranked down to the ground that makes speed bumps its worst enemy. It sounds as mean as it looks with both a performance air intake system and exhaust fitted. Inside, almost all creature comforts have been stripped away, leaving a small leather racing steering wheel and two narrow fibreglass bucket seats that require a gymnast’s agility to climb in and out.
No modified car is complete without a set of trick alloy wheels, or in Low’s case, “at least” 10 different sets in all different colours that he’s owned during the time he’s had the vehicle. His choice in wheels (called rims in tunerspeak) has also evolved over time – the trend right now is the “hella flush” look where extremely wide wheels, up to nine, 10 or even 11 inches across, are paired with thin tires that completely fill out the entire wheel well, making it sit flush with the car’s fenders.
Surprisingly, one of the only semi-untouched areas of the car lies in the engine bay. The Nissan retains its original heart, a 2.4-litre engine producing, by today’s standards, a modest 140 horsepower and 152 ft-lbs of torque. Saving the best for last, Low has future plans to include some go with the show by either adding an aftermarket turbocharger or swapping the engine for the overseas two-litre turbo models that make over 200 horsepower and foot-pounds of torque.
“I’ve been modding crazy since probably I was in high school, from ’99 til 2009,” says Low, who indicated he currently has other priorities, like his little baby boy, Brendan.
As any car enthusiast will tell you, though, a project is never truly finished.
“When I have more time and money later I plan on doing other stuff,” he says, which includes possibly picking up a second S13 to drive every day, relegating the first as a garage queen.

Honda has unveiled an all-new ASIMO humanoid robot with a world-first technology allowing ASIMO to move without being controlled by an operator.
With significantly improved intelligence and the physical ability to adapt to situations, ASIMO has taken another step closer to practical use in an office or public
space.Honda has also introduced a new task-
performing robot arm. This experimental model was developed while applying multi-joint and posture control technologies.
This robot arm can be controlled remotely to perform tasks in places difficult for people to access.
The all-new ASIMO now has the ability to make decisions based on its surroundings and the movements of
people. Honda has developed a new system that is key for advanced intelligence.
The new system continuously evaluates the input from multiple sensors, predicts the situation and then determines the behaviour of the robot. With this technology ASIMO is now capable of responding to the movement of people and the surrounding situations.
This technology also enables ASIMO to recognize faces and voices.

With autumn’s cold weather upon us – and winter not far behind – drivers will soon be faced with icy and snowy road conditions.
While driving in the winter, peace of mind can come with improving the contact points between a vehicle and the road surface, explains Brandy Gadd, Goodyear Tire brand manager. “Winter driving is all about preparation, and the key to being ready for winter is taking the necessary steps before consumers get behind the wheel,” she says.
• Match your driving speed to the current conditions. If conditions are challenging due to a slippery road surface or reduced visibility, decrease your speed. A slower driving speed allows more time for a necessary response.
Always keep the posted speed limits in mind, and understand that those limits indicate the maximum speed under ideal weather conditions.
• Plan ahead and try to anticipate potentially dangerous situations. When approaching a curve or potentially slick area of the road, use the brakes effectively. The brakes should be applied only before a curve and on a straight section of the road.
• Be alert to other vehicles. Maintain enough distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. If someone else seems to be following
too close to your vehicle, perhaps slow down to allow them to pass – rather than speeding up to achieve a safe, distance between vehicles.
• If visibility is poor, remember to use your lights. This helps other drivers to see you when approaching or when following. You should always turn your lights on when your windshield wipers are on.
• Set the vehicle cabin to a comfortable temperature. This can be a challenge during winter when drivers and passengers may be wearing heavy coats in a vehicle, but it is imperative to be comfortable when driving. Cabin comfort includes keeping the windows free of frost, ice and snow.
• Avoid overconfident driving, and avoid overestimating the vehicle’s capability simply because it is equipped with anti-lock brakes, four-wheel drive, traction control, winter tires or other safety devices.
• Before driving in inclement weather, be sure that your vehicle is properly maintained. Make sure your windshield wipers work properly; have the correct level of antifreeze for heating and defrosting the vehicle; keep plenty of gas in the tank; and always use required safety devices such as seatbelts.

As Chevrolet marks its 100th birthday this year, Kelley Blue Book, provider of new and used car information, has named its picks for the Top 10 Chevys of All Time, including the most significant product and design developments in the company’s history.
Formed in November 1911 by pioneering automotive businessman William C. Durant and his then-partner, famed Swiss racing driver and engineer, Louis Chevrolet, the most successful division in General Motors history Chevrolet is a brand deeply engrained in North American culture. In selecting those top 10 picks, Kelley’s staff looked not only at technical innovation, but also vehicles that changed the automotive landscape.
Here’s a quick look back at the 10 most-influential and important vehicles that shaped the enduring legacy of the brand that made the bowtie famous. For expanded commentary on the following abridged version of the Top 10 Chevrolets, visit www.kbb.com/car-news/all-the-latest/top-10-chevrolet-historic-milestones
1912 Chevrolet Series C Classic SixThe first step in establishing one
of America’s most iconic brands was introduced in 1911 and went on sale the following year. The seminal Chevrolet model was priced at a then-hefty $2,150, which put it well out of the reach of
blue-collar workers who barely earned that much as their annual wages. The model had only moderate success, but set the tone for what would become a megabrand.
1916 Chevrolet 490While the first Chevrolet was
positioned to the middle of the car-buying market – well-to-do professionals -- the 1916 490 was intended to go head-to-head with Ford’s incredibly popular Model T. It got its name from its base price – $490 – a figure that not coincidentally was $5 less than that of its prime rival, and it sent the brand on its present course.
1929 Chevrolet with Stovebolt-Six Engine
In the wake of Ford’s introduction of the Model A, Chevrolet went its arch-rival two better – two cylinders, that is. Equipped with the legendary ‘stovebolt’ six-cylinder engine, the 1929 Chevrolets offered two more cylinders than Ford’s ‘four-banger’ and established the brand as Ford’s key competitor.
1936 Chevrolet Suburban Carryall Recognized by most automotive
historians as the first-ever sport utility vehicle, the 1936 Chevrolet Suburban Carryall combined a station-wagon body style with a half-ton truck chassis to create a new market segment that’s still going strong after more than 75
years.
1948 Chevrolet Series 3100 PickupThe 1948 Chevrolet Series 3100
Pickup set the stage for Chevy’s modern-day pickups by introducing a new level of unexpected interior creature comforts, like a full three-across adjustable bench seat in place of the old trio of individual fixed-position perches, inside door locks, ‘Four-fold’ ventilation and an accessory AM radio.
1955 Chevrolet with Turbo-Fire V8A double winner for the division, the
1955 Chevrolet line ushered in both the now-iconic 1955-1957 ‘Tri5’ era and the spectacularly successful and incredibly long-lived small-block V-8 engine, which supplemented the veteran inline six. The introduction of the new Turbo-Fire V8 option helped Chevy sell more than 1.7 million units in this pivotal year.
1963 Corvette Sting RayArguably the greatest and
unquestionably one of the most desirable models of all time, the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray was a rolling revelation in style and technology that has influenced the look and feel of every successive generation.
1960-1969 Chevrolet CorvairCreated in response to the increasing
threat posed by imports – notably the Volkswagen Beetle – the Chevrolet
Corvair also was meant to counter the arrival of new downsized domestics like the Ford Falcon and Plymouth Valiant. Though many car reviewers liked Chevy’s innovative approach to small-car design, Ralph Nader’s devastating “Unsafe at Any Speed” inflicted a mortal wound to the car’s reputation.
1967-69 Chevrolet CamaroWith the Ford Mustang galloping
out of the blocks at a record sales pace, Chevy responded by introducing its own brand of pony car, the now legendary Camaro. Although it shared some platform mechanicals with the upcoming Chevrolet Nova, the Camaro’s aggressively refined exterior styling set it well apart from its compact kin.
2011 Chevrolet VoltA genuine revolution in automotive
transportation, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt stands as one of the crowning achievements of the division’s century of ongoing progress. Coupling knowledge gained from GM’s pioneering EV1 electric car program in the 1990s, engineers on the Volt development team managed to bring this sleek, well-appointed four-passenger liftback sedan from an auto show concept to full production status in less than four years.
