Continued from Pg. B1Driver of the Week...When a long-time customer was
moving back East and couldn’t take his “project,” a 1963 Lincoln Continental, along for the ride, Peter Grant, owner of Lyall Street Service, was happy to give the classic ride a new home.
Though he’s just mid-way through the restoration today, Grant looks
forward to having the 18-foot-long soon-to-be-beauty as a starring attraction at his annual ALS Car Show, coming up at the shop June 12.
The Lincoln holds a special place in automobile history for many. Though Grant himself was born shortly after the event, for him it will always be “the
Kennedy car,” after American president John F. Kennedy was assassinated in a similar model.
On a lighter note, he and his mechanics recall a certain Hollywood treasure, Animal House. In the movie, “eight adults sat comfortably – and this is the same exact car,” right down to the
year and model, Grant notes, pointing our his favourite feature: suicide doors.
It all fits perfectly with the car’s legacy, and style.
“This car is mammoth – 18-feet-long and weighing 5,200 pounds – in a word, I would say ‘imposing!’”
This 1963 Lincoln Continental will be a guest star at Peter Grant’s ALS car show and shine on June 12.

General Motors recently built its 100-millionth small-block engine – 56 years after the first production small block – representing an engineering legacy that continues to deliver greater performance and efficiency through advanced technology.
Chevrolet introduced the small-block in 1955 and the production milestone comes in the same month the brand marked its 100th anniversary.
The small-block engine has been used in GM vehicles around the world and is currently found in global Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, as well as Vauxhall in the United Kingdom and Holden in Australia.
The milestone engine is a 638 hp supercharged LS9 small block – the power behind the 329 km/h Corvette ZR1 – which is hand-built at GM’s Performance Build Center, northwest of Detroit.
It represents the fourth generation of the small block and is the most powerful engine ever built by GM for a regular-production car. GM will preserve the engine as part of its historical collection.
The small block has been adapted in almost innumerable ways throughout the auto industry and beyond.
Updated versions of the original Gen I engine are still in production for marine and industrial applications, while “crate engine” versions offered by Chevrolet Performance are used by thousands of enthusiasts every year to build hot rods.

Paul Carter and his restored 1908 White Steamer.
Peter Trant with his all-original, century-old Chalmers touring car that remains unrestored except for a mechanical rebuild.
Paul Carter says. “There is a monogram on both sides which is so faded it can’t be read but there must be a story behind this car.”
The shop has two lathes, a milling machine, bead blasting machine and even metal spinning and wood spoke wheel-making equipment that Carter and Trant built themselves. They make their own patterns and do their own brass and aluminum casting.
The talented pair reproduced the brass headlights, radiator and most of the taillight for Carter’s 1903 Columbia. He doggedly pursued the one-family-owned antique car stored in a Bangor, Pennsylvania barn after hearing about it from a man he was buying parts from.
Carter drove to the area, sleuthed out the barn and wouldn’t take no for an answer when the farmer refused to show him the very rare car. The Columbia had been in a local parade and put away in the barn where it didn’t move for over 70 years. “It was totally worn out mechanically, there was junk piled on top of it and the tires were stuck to the barn floor,” Carter recalls.
He wrote the owner a letter every six months for four and a half years. One day Carter received a letter back stating: buy it now or it will be gone tomorrow. Paul Carter bought the car that was complete except for the top and taillight. One of
the tires he took off the car still holds air from 1903.
The two friends fabricated new top sockets and latching irons for the ancient car and rebuilt every mechanical component. A major hurdle was a broken crankshaft. So they manufactured a new one by first making a wooden pattern to check the fit of the new part. They work seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. unless there are holidays or an old car touring event to attend.
The Columbia is parked beside Carter’s 1908 White Steamer which had been originally purchased in Portland, Ore. by a farmer from Woodlands, Wa. It was eventually converted to a farm truck. When Carter bought the car, he found the rear section of the body in the barn. He subsequently did a total restoration of the steam-driven car.
There’s a story behind every one of his antique cars. The 1931 Packard 826 sport sedan was purchased new in Calgary by a farmer after oil was discovered on his land. By 1939, his eyesight had deteriorated to the point that he could no longer drive the car. He was so upset that he built a special room inside his house for the massive Packard and would often sit in the car to read the newspaper.
Paul Carter’s latest acquisition is a 1909 Packard three-ton truck that is one of only 104 trucks built by the luxury car maker that year. It may be the earliest Packard truck in existence. The huge machine cost $3,850 new at a time when a Model T Ford truck sold for $400. It is scheduled to undergo a complete restoration.
One of Peter Trant’s favourite brass-era cars that he and Paul are working on is his remarkably original century-old Chalmers touring car. This fully functional unrestored survivor has travelled only 10,778 miles (17,345 kilometres) since new.
It came most recently from Victoria, B.C. and originally from Washington State where it sat unused for more than 60 years. Both Peter and Paul agree that this 1911 Chalmers should never be restored. It should be maintained and treasured for its originality.
Peter Trant and Paul Carter have faced many hurdles restoring ancient vehicles together for the past two decades. One of the most challenging restorations was a 1938 John Deere Tractor that was shipped from the factory on Aug. 1, 1938 to Yorkton, Sask.
The dismantled derelict car was found in South Langley and was brought to the shop in baskets of worn out parts.” The 73-year-old farmer’s friend has been restored to better-than-new condition and is now living a life of leisure at an Okanagan farm

owned by Peter Trant’s wife, Brenda Leir.“It’s what we want to do,” enthuses Peter Trant. He and
his friend often complete projects for other antique car owners and restorers. “We even make our own high head bolts and nuts for these old antiques. Modern bolts just don’t look right on them and you can’t buy the correct old-fashioned ones.”

Following in the footsteps of Hyundai’s Tau V8 engine, the 1.6-litre GDI Gamma engine, which debuted on the all-new Accent, has been named one of the Ward’s 10 Best Engines by WardsAuto World.
The Hyundai Accent is available with the 1.6-litre GDI Gamma engine paired with a proprietary six-speed automatic or manual transmission. This combination results in best-in-class fuel economy of (US) 30 mpg city/40 mpg highway and best-in-class 138 horsepower.
The all-new Gamma 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai
engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) in the U.S., which helps deliver an estimated highway fuel economy of up to (US) 40 mpg, lower emissions and higher reliability.
Through the use of GDI technology, the Gamma 1.6-litre engine delivers a peak output of 138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 lb/ft at
4,850 rpm. However, GDI is only part of the story,
as the new Gamma also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition coating and Diamond Like Carbon.

An Aston Martin ordered by George Harrison in 1965 sold at auction in London recently for £350,000 after fierce bidding from around the world.
Manufactured in late 1964, the DB5/1896/R was supplied new on Jan. 1, 1965 through Brydor Cars of Brooklands in Surrey to the famous Beatle and had created huge interest when it was put up for sale at the COYS True Greats Auction held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in Westminster.
There was intense bidding in the room and from telephone bidders in the United States and elsewhere.
The car was eventually knocked down to an anonymous Beatle and Aston Martin fan from Houston, Texas, who said: “George Harrison would be amazed about all the money his car is going to raise for Christian causes.”
Recently, model and photographer Patti Boyd, who was married to George Harrison when he owned the DB5, was re-united with the car when it was showcased at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London.
Chris Routledge, Managing Director at car auction house COYS said, “There was a battle royal for this car which went for some £150,000.00 over its estimate.”

You’re going to be hearing a lot more about Skyactiv Technology.
It’s the direction Mazda is taking to make all its vehicles more energy and emission efficient into the next decade.
Rather than venture into the costly world of electric cars and hybrids, Mazda has chosen the parsimonious path of taking improved gasoline and diesel engines along with weight savings to make their cars and trucks relevant in an automotive world that gets greener every day.
To get there Mazda has focused on four major areas:
• New generation Skyactiv-G gasoline engine efficiency that delivers a 15 per cent increase in fuel economy and torque.
• The introduction of new Skyactiv-D diesel engine technology that delivers a 20 per cent fuel economy improvement thanks to the world’s lowest diesel-engine compression ratio.
• The introduction of new six-speed automatic transmission available on both gasoline and diesel as well as a new lightweight compact six-speed manual transmission which deliver fuel economy and therefore emission improvements.
• An all-new platform providing highly rigid body and chassis that achieves outstanding crash safety performance while being 110 kg lighter than its predecessor.
My first real-world experience was with the 2012 Mazda3 with the Skyactiv-G engine in the GS model, the middle trim level between the base GX and topline GT.
The Mazda3 GS-Sky can be considered a “half ” Skyactiv because it has the Skyactiv-G engine and
transmissions but it uses the standard Mazda3 chassis and body. Also the Formula One style 4-2-1 exhaust system that lets the engine run at a compression ratio of 13:1 is not used. Nonetheless, the 2.0-litre in the Mazda3 GS-Sky runs at 12:1, the same as a Ferrari Italia. The GS-Sky uses regular gasoline not premium.
As tested the Skyactiv-G engine produces 155 hp and 148 lb/ft of torque versus the 148 hp and 135 lb/ft of torque for the “normal” 2.0-litre in the GX.
The new six-speed automatic is a big step forward from the five-speed in the 2011 Mazda3.
Transport Canada offers numbers of 7.7/5.0L/100 km city/highway with the manual and 7.1/4.9L/100 km city/highway for the automatic. Note the automatic is slightly better on gas than the manual, which shows how much better this new generation of automatics have become.
Other than the engine and transmission, the GS-Sky differs in no other way from the other Mazda3
Mazda follows its one green road
The 2012 Mazda3 GS-Sky compact sedan and hatchback (shown) is the first Mazda vehicle to be fitted with this all-new Skyactiv technology which improves power, lowers weight and gives improved fuel economy.

models.Like all Mazda products, it is a
driver’s car and very agile and that includes the Skyactiv version.
My tester came with the automatic thus I didn’t try the new six-speed manual to find out if it is indeed as light and fast as that on the MX-5 Miata.
The layout of the instrument panel is identical to all other Mazda3s. However, the signature amber gauge illumination on the GX and GT is replaced on GS-Sky models with soft blue gradation with white centre.
In keeping with the blue theme,
there are azure surrounds on the headlights which gives off a bluish cast.
On the outside the only difference is a small Skyactiv badge on the rear.
Depending on trim levels, pricing ranges from $18,995 to $22,390, not counting a $1,595 shipping fee.
When it comes to going green, Mazda is marching to a truly different drummer with Skyactiv.
But just remember, this is the company that made the rotary engine work when industry giants like GM could not.

Bridgestone Corporation has announced it has developed a non-pneumatic (i.e., airless) concept tire that could prove to be a viable and more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional tires in the future.
Non-pneumatic tires have a lesser impact on the environment than today’s conventional tires, but previously such concept tires have been impractical to produce for the mass market.
Bridgestone developed this technology with the aim of practical implementation.
With a unique structure of spokes stretching along the inner sides of the tires supporting the weight of the vehicle, there is no need to periodically refill the tires with air, meaning that the tires require less maintenance.
At the same time, the worry of punctures is eliminated.
In addition, the spoke structure within the tire is made from reusable thermoplastic resin, and along with the rubber in the tread portion, the materials used in the tires are 100 per cent recyclable.
As a result, the tires set a new standard in terms of environmental friendliness, safety and comfort.

During the busy holiday season, motorists can’t control the price of gas, but they can keep from getting “grinched” by following a few simple steps from Be Car Care Aware.
Fuel economy is directly related to vehicle maintenance. Be Car Care Aware offers these gas-saving maintenance tips to maximize fuel savings:
• Keep your car properly tuned to improve fuel consumption by an average of four per cent.
• Keep tires properly inflated and improve fuel consumption by three per cent.
• Replace dirty or clogged air filters on older vehicles to improve fuel consumption by as much as 14 per cent.
• Replace dirty spark plugs, which can improve fuel consumption by .85 kilometers per litre
• Change oil regularly and improve fuel consumption by 0.4 kilometers per litre
Driving behaviour also impacts fuel efficiency. The council offers these gas-
saving driving tips:• Observe the speed limit. Fuel
consumption decreases rapidly above 100 km/h.
• Avoid excessive idling. Warming up the vehicle for one or two minutes is sufficient.
• Avoid quick starts and stops. Aggressive driving decreases fuel consumption by 33 per cent on the highway and five per cent in the city.
• Consolidate trips. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much gas as one longer multi-purpose trip.
• Don’t haul unneeded items in the trunk. An extra 45 kilograms in the trunk decreases fuel consumption by one to two per cent.
“Looking Down” the Road is Be Car Care Aware’s 2011 theme to increase consumer awareness about proper vehicle maintenance, safety and repair.
Research shows that there is $10 billion worth of vehicle maintenance and repair is being neglected by Canadian consumers.
Neglected vehicle care almost always means much higher costs down the line, either in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value.
Keep Christmas cash in your pocket this holiday season by performing some simple vehicle maintenance.
Don’t get ‘Grinched’ at the gas pump

Harley-Davidson has bolstered its parts and accessories catalogue with new items for the 2012 riding season.
Among the new entries are:• The new Extended Reach Billet
Style Rear Brake Lever and Extended Reach Billet Style Heel/Toe Shift Lever designed to offer riders with long legs and larger-sized boots more room around the footboards. Styled to complement Harley-Davidson billet-style mirror stems, these levers are forged, machined, and polished for a beautiful, custom look.
• New Boom! Audio Speaker Trim. These chrome trim rings outline the speaker and accent the full-range element and grill-mounted tweeter.
• New Combination Digital Speedometer/Analogue Tachometer (fits Softail and Dyna models that are equipped with an original equipment four-inch speedometer. This single combination gauge displays engine speed in RPM and vehicle speed without adding an additional handlebar-mounted gauge. The digital speed-reading can be toggled between MPH and KPH to simplify cross-border travel.
Hey, Bigfoot! Harley-Davidson has added new parts and accessories to the catalogue for the 2012 riding season, including an Extended Reach Billet Style Heel/Toe Shift Lever (seen here) that offers two inches more space between the front and rear shift levers.

A highly advanced, range-extending electric sports car concept is under development at Infiniti.
Set to emerge at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2012, this vehicle is being created to extend the potential for high performance, low emission electric cars.
Explaining the strategy behind the
concept, Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd and Infiniti said: “At the Geneva show next year, we will present our vision for a totally new kind of inspired premium performance car.
“Infiniti already has hybrid and clean diesel models on sale. And with an all-electric sedan on the way, the natural next step was to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect.”
