The plan was simple but audacious – we would ride The Rock.
We would head east, motoring to the Maritimes before catching a ferry for a leisurely week of riding the edges of Newfoundland.
The capper for this near-three-week planned adventure was that we would be doing the trip on board a motorcycle long regarded as the king of touring bikes – a new 2012 Honda Gold Wing.
We arrived at Honda Canada with bags and helmets in hand. My wife Mary and I have toured on Gold Wings before, so we knew what to pack. Lee Fisher’s 2011 Mini Cooper All 4 Countryman offers the best of both worlds for the lawyer and owner with Fisher, Murphy and Woodward Lawyers.
Describing his Mini as “Frisky” and “Spunky,” “like my two French Bulldogs,” his favourite feature is definitely the all-wheel drive.
Of course, with Fisher’s history with the Mini, there must be a lot to like.“Can’t get enough Minis!” he says. “This is my third one in the last six

website, but, to me, the 2012 styling looks less chunky, more cohesive as your eye follows the main character line stretching from under the headlight to the new tapered tip of the revised hardbags.
That new, pointed pannier shape adds a few litres of extra room to the stretched sidecases, increasing overall storage capacity to more than 150 litres, including the trunk (or top case).
Other changes? The tail light assembly was restyled
to match the sharper-edged rear design. The fascia is a touch wider and was remoulded for better lower leg wind protection, although my memory is not sharp enough to note any marked difference.
I set the suspension preload to a midpoint between comfort and handling for our two-up tour, but the overall setup has been revised for sharper response and better road feel. New water-repellant urethane seats feel plusher and the wheels are now clear-coated for easier cleaning.
From the saddle, everything looks about the same. The cockpit still fronts more buttons than a Boeing and the instrument layout looks comfortingly familiar or increasingly dated, depending on your point of view.
For 2012, there have been changes to the electronics, with a brighter, smarter Nav display featuring lane guidance and interface abilities with home computer trip planning. A more powerful SRS CS Auto surround-sound system allows you to control your trunk-mounted iPod from the cockpit.
I don’t normally need music on a motorcycle but it’s nice to have your personal playlist on longer highway runs, before the brain-dead blahs set in. Or even as a soundtrack to a nice winding road.
All these minor changes build on a long list of inherent features that have made the Gold Wing a touring bike legend – the power, reliability, handling, luggage utility, wind and weather protection and the comforts courtesy of cruise control, foot vent heaters, heated grips and heated seats.
We escaped Ontario with single-minded purpose, blasted down the 401, rattled a few fillings on the cobblestones of Montreal’s old Ville-Marie and met up with Mary’s brother Ed and his wife Angela deeper in Quebec.
Ed’s 1990 Gold Wing SE, towing a trailer complete with cooler and a wheelchair, was an ancestral contrast to the new Wing. We kept on coming east, finally kissed by the sea breezes of the Atlantic, across the Confederation Bridge to P.E.I. and into Nova Scotia to meet with a larger group of friends for the ride.
But on the night before the ferry to Newfoundland, cell phones began to light up in the dark. An aging parent had been rushed to the hospital.
“Life happens,” they say, “while you’re busy making other plans.”
The decisions boiled down to the only one left. The furthest east we got was the Sydney Airport. The girls felt compelled to fly home and we didn’t have the heart to continue on without them.
So, while the rest of the group boarded the ferry to Newfoundland, Ed and I turned our bikes west, finding consolation in the curves of the Cabot Trail before the long haul home.
That’s where this big bike showed its heels and some of its surprising sport DNA.
We then blasted through the TransCanada’s road spray on Maritime mornings and spiraled up New England’s White Mountains, Green Mountains, all kinds of mountains under sunny, blue skies.
We rode past the kind of scenery that made you catch your breath and through pulp and paper towns that made you hold your breath.
But if there was one recurring, prevalent theme of the trip, it would have to be, as always, the steady beat of the Gold Wing’s 1832 cc engine.
The quick start, the seemingly effortless pull, the same characteristics in both engines, one brand new, one 21 years old. Usually humming along at its 3,000 rpm sweet spot in fifth gear overdrive at highway speed, the Gold Wing earned an overall fuel economy average of just over 5.4L/100km.
When I got home past the last gap of urban nuttiness and after 5,000 km, I fell to my knees beside the bike. Okay, that was me clowning around, but the sentiment was real.
There may be a future generation Gold Wing in the works. Rumours abound about a possible 2.0-litre engine, VFR-style double clutch transmission or a DN-01 type of automatic.
Honda may well be struggling with the iconic challenge of appealing to new customers while appeasing the old, but their design studios are notoriously close-lipped, so we will just have to wait and see.
But I do know one thing. I know that no matter what form a future Honda Gold Wing may take, it will continue to stress the performance, the engineering and the bulletproof reliability that has made the Gold Wing a benchmark in the touring class.
And I also know that Newfoundland will still be there in a year or two.

The next generation Suzuki Swift Sport will make its world debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
The new Swift Sport is a refined sport compact resulting from the first full model change since the launch of the original Swift Sport in 2006.
It has a more aggressive and dignified exterior look thanks to a low-slung form that gives a sense of stability and tension, and a big front grille that evokes a sporty performance feel.
The cabin combines essential sportiness with a high-quality look
and feel, and design features that heighten excitement about the driving experience.
Higher power and lower fuel consumption are delivered by the 1.6-litre M16A engine, which Suzuki developed exclusively for the Swift Sport.
The engine is mated to a specially developed six-speed manual transmission, resulting in performance that is both exciting and environmentally responsible.
The new Swift Sport offers superior cornering stability and brisker, more responsive handling thanks to struts
with internal rebound springs and an exclusive rear-suspension design.
High levels of safety are assured by features such as a light, stiff,
impact absorbing body, seven airbags (including curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag); and Electronic Stability Program.

Magellan GPS has announced the launch of a Back-Up Camera companion product for its RoadMate® safety series car navigation units that will help drivers reverse and park more safely.
The Magellan Wireless Back-Up Camera attaches to the vehicle’s rear license plate and transmits images directly to the 7-inch, high-resolution screen of a RoadMate 1700 or RoadMate 9055 GPS device. When the car is put into reverse, the GPS navigator will switch from map to rear-view mode, enabling drivers to view what is below the rear window.
The Back-Up Camera is both dustproof and waterproof to IP67 standard, and features a
wide-angle viewing lens that provides a 120-degree viewing area behind the vehicle. The transmitter, which sits in the car’s trunk, is also water resistant (to IPX4 standard). With a 45-foot range and a 45-degree camera vertical adjustment, the transmitter is adaptable for most vehicles, SUVs and RVs.
The Magellan Wireless Back-Up Camera kit comes complete with a license plate mountable camera, transmitter, wireless receiver, vehicle power adapter, installation hardware, and instructions. It is available at Amazon.com and automotive specialty shops, and retails at a MSRP of $149.99.

Green Initiative
Mazda is planning to be one of the greenest automotive makers on the planet, applying new thinking to a known power source – the internal combustion engine.
By next year consumers will be able to buy Mazdas featuring major fuel savings and emission reductions with no compromise in driving dynamics.
Several years of work are now coming together in a new generation of gasoline and diesel engines, improved model aerodynamics, vehicle weight reduction, new chassis and transmission developments that are all embraced within Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology.
SKYACTIV focuses on four central technologies:
• New generation SKYACTIV-G
gasoline engine efficiency that delivers a 15-per-cent-increase in fuel economy and torque.
• The introduction of new SKYACTIV-D diesel engine technology that delivers a 20-per-cent fuel economy improvement thanks to the world’s lowest diesel-engine compression ratio.
• The introduction of new six-speed automatic transmission available on both gasoline and diesel as well as a new lightweight compact six-speed manual transmission which deliver fuel economy and therefore emission improvements.
• An all-new platform providing highly rigid body and chassis that achieve outstanding crash safety performance while being 110 kg lighter than the predecessor.
The diesel is intriguing because Mazda, instead of raising the compression for more power, lowered it to 14-1. For instance the VW TDI has a compression ratio of 16.5-1.
Using a longer stroke and decreasing friction, the result is 20
per cent less fuel being used without resorting to using urea to remove nitrous oxide which is necessary in high-compression diesels.
The downside is knock and misfires, especially at startup. What Mazda did was incorporate variable valve timing, piezo direct fuel injection and unique ceramic glow plugs.
With a two-stage turbocharger it produces 173 hp and 310 lb/ft of torque from 2.2-litres. That compares to the VW 2.0-TDI that produces 140 hp and 236 lb/ft of torque.
The gasoline engine is a new 2.0 litre with a compression ratio of 13-1 that will be increased to 14-1 buy the time it goes into production.
That makes it currently the world’s highest compression mass production gasoline engine on the market. For instance, the Ferrari Italia has a compression ratio of 12-1.
The result is a claimed 15-per-cent-decrease in fuel consumption and 15-per-cent-more power using normal

Mazda will begin building its next generation of cars and trucks with gasoline or diesel engines using SKYACTIV technology that provides 15-20 less fuel consumption along with the marque’s “zoom zoom” sporty handling.

regular gasoline. To get there, Mazda engineers used a
4-2-1 exhaust system like a Formula One car, a stratified air/fuel mixture and pistons that are 20 per cent lighter and incorporate a central depression on the piston crown that adds more downward thrust at the point of ignition aided by a longer stroke.
I had a chance to drive both the diesel and gasoline engines with both the new manual and automatic transmissions briefly at a press presentation in Vancouver.
These were very rough prototypes, many without gauges and you could see where the body work had improvised pieces pop riveted on to accommodate the changes to the chassis.
The diesel started without a stumble and pulled like a train in any gear especially when merging with highway traffic.
Of the two transmissions, I preferred the automatic. The only time I felt the gears change was with the pedal to the metal. Otherwise it felt like a CVT without the nauseating “rubber banding” effect.
Both transmissions can handle up to 340 lb/ft of torque.
We also had current production cars there to gauge against the test mules.
There was no real difference between the gasoline engines I could tell but there was a definite difference in the diesels.
We do not get the current 2.2-litre Mazda diesel here and it’s probably a good thing as it felt slow compared to the SKYACTIV-D.
By concentrating on the internal combustion engine, Mazda feels it can provide what they call “sustainable zoom zoom.”
I spent quite a bit of time with Kiyoshi Fujiwara who is the Executive Officer of Product Planning. In short, the SKYACTIV buck stops with him. He told me one of the challenges was producing the next generation of Mazdas which would above all retain Mazda’s sporty characteristics.
He called it “jimba itta” or a oneness of car and driver.
Building a car that gets astounding mileage is one thing, but to make it appealing to drivers, he said, is quite
another. He called SKYACTIV a way to have
“fun under a beautiful blue sky.”Has a nice sound doesn’t it?

Mazda brought several early prototype SKYACTIV vehicles based on the current Mazda6 to a press preview in Vancouver. Note the pieces of body pop riveted into place to accommodate the new SKYACTIV chassis underneath.
This is the piston of the SKYACTIV-G engine. Note the well in the piston crown designed to focus the charge and drive the piston down with more force.

With an impressive 206 net horsepower, proprietary 6-speed automatic transmission, panoramic sunroof, and LCD trip computer, the Sonata Hybrid feels more like driving a conventional automobile. After all, just because you care about the environment, doesn’t also mean you don’t care about a great driving experience.
