In second grade, Mrs. Rodrigues'
class worked on oral reading
fluency and expression through
reading a play and singing a song.
Students invited their relatives to
watch them perform The StrongestOne, an American Indian tale
retold by Joseph Bruchac, and the
song "The Ants Go Marching In."
The story is about a little red ant
that leaves her colony to find the
answer to the question "Who is the
strongest one of all?" After
exploring nature looking for the
answer, and returning to the
colony, the little red ant realizes
that ants can be the strongest onesin some ways, even being so
small. The audience of about forty
adults and children were delighted
with the performance and
enthusiastically joined the song
about busy, marching ants and the
end of the performance. A video of
the play was produced by a groupof students with Mrs. Rodrigues,
which was projected at the most
recent F.A. March assembly,
providing the opportunity to share
their experience also with the
other students and school staff.
Mrs. Rodrigues concludes, "We
worked in our reading skills,
integrating Language Arts,
Science, Art and Technology, but
most of all we learned that even ifwe are small, we can be very
strong if we work hard and give

PTA hosted a McTeacher Night at McDonalds to raisemoney for school-wide events. We had a terrific turnoutwith 21 staff members making and serving food to manyof our March School families. The location of the event helped to
bridge the gap between our school location andmany of the families thatattend March. It wasgreat to look out frombehind the counter and see the excitement
that each child was feeling as they walked inand saw their teachers. March PTA received20% of all profits made during our 4-hourshift. Our hard word paid off, as we wereable to receive a check for $637.80 fromMcDonalds. What a fantastic event!

! While reading the story Tops andBottoms, Mrs. Costellos third grade class
explored the rich character traits associated
with the memorable characters, Bear and
Hare. The students were able to identify
traits that depicted both characters behavior
and their actions in the story. They used
story details to support
and prove that particular
character trait matched
the characters personality.
! Miss Smith, a student teacher fromBloomsburg University, turned this enjoyable stor
into a readers theater. Practicing their fluency,
prosody, and strong speaking voices, the children
performed the Readers Theater during
