Welcome to the Doggie Den!Welcome to the newest member of the F. A.March school community-team M & M! Marchis lucky to have our neighbor, Mrs. LindaMartin and her certified therapy dog, Millie, aspart of our family. Team Martin & Millie arriveeach week to meet with grade 2 students inthe doggie den, a special place for the childrento share stories, read flashcards, and performskits to a PAW-fect listener, Millie.

This program was set into motion after Mrs.Martin and Millie were certified throughTherapy Dogs Incorporated, and were looking

for a way to provide some service to the localcommunity. Mrs. Pasquel coordinated the

idea of a new therapy dog literacy program, which helps to support fluency and can buildconfidence in our young readers.

To help students and teachers acclimate tothe idea, a large stuffed prop dog wasprovided to the teachers so they could prepareto meet Millie. In addition to the stuffedanimal, teachers were encouraged to shareone of three stories about how therapy dogscan assist people, such as working with theblind and deaf, helping law enforcement, andassisting those who may have physical

    limitations. MORE ON PAGE 4

March School is off to a good start usingFirst in Math Online Program in grades 2,

3, and 4. First In Math activities employ Deep Practicetechniques to rapidly increase computation, problemsolving, critical thinking and essential math basics. Skills

that may take months of regular practice can be mastered ina much shorter time using Deep Practice techniques and the

immediate feedback online learning can provide. Children using

FIM have shown dramatic increases in math scoresacross theboard from the top students to the most math-challenged

learners. We are excited to see students'active engagement in the program againthis year. Classrooms have alreadystarted earning weekly trophies for beingthe team of the week in their grade.

    Kindergartens Who is in theigloo?

In kindergarten, we were discussing igloos

when working on the letter I. We read thestory The Three Snow Bears, by Jan Brett,

which features three polar bears that live in an

igloo. We then compared and contrasted that story with the original story of

Goldilocks and the Three Bears. After discussing both stories, the students

created an igloo, and drew a picture of what was inside of the igloo. The

students finished their project by writing a sentence that answered the

question Who is in the igloo?

    Students were prepared to work

with the therapy dog throughreview of the doggie den rules

    and were provided with practice

    scenarios using a stuffed

    animal. Mrs. Keglovitz, or

Mrs. K as the students call

her, is a staff member in our building who escorts

the children to and from the Doggie Den. We

    especially appreciate her willingness and

enthusiasm in assisting with this new endeavor.

All grade 2 students are invited to visit if they

choose, and teachers are following a schedule. Mrs.

Laslos class was the first to visit the doggie den,

followed by Mr. Nagles class, Mrs. Rodrigues

class and Miss Waas class. In order to make the

    program

    successful and

provide time for everyone, students visited in small

goups, so if your child hasnt visited yet, their time

    will come soon.

The students have been very excited to work withTeam Martin and Millie and

we hope to hear more tails from the doggie den in

future issues of the Little Leopard news!

    In November, we kicked off

    our third annual Student Mystery

    Readers. 3rd and 4th grade

    students went into classrooms

    throughout the building and read

    Halloween stories. This past

    week, Dec 18

    &19 we

    had oursecond

    event.

    Student

    read

    different

    versions of

    The Night

    before

    Christmas. Two different

    versions of the sane story

was read to every class.Student Mystery

Readers are for 3rd and 4th

    grade students only and is

    optional. Students sign up

    and then are randomly chosen

to read on one of the Student

    Mystery Reader Days through out

the year. This year we had 110

    students sign

    up and will behaving five

    events.

    They

    received a

    special reader

    hat to wear

    while reading

    and then keep

them. The mystery part is that

    classroom students know

someone is coming to read to

them but they dont know who,

    when, or what book.

Our student readers did anexcellent job of reading to the

students. Students and staff had a

    great time hearing the stories.

    Look for our next Student

    Mystery Readers in March for

    Dr. Seusss Birthday!

Enjoy all kinds of foods! That's good advice for kids-and for you. When kids learn toenjoy many foods, they have more choices for smart eating throughout life. That's

good because different foods promote growth and health in different ways. Foodvariety makes eating more interesting and fun, too. Remember: seeing, trying, comparing, and talking about different foods is part of learning. Stay tuned in future

publications and with recipes on tips to get your kids to try and enjoy new foods.

The fourth graders at MarchElementary School are

building birdhouses. Eachstudent receives a small kit

and glues the piecestogether. Then, an adultnails and strengthens the

sides. Finally, the houses are painted a variety of brightcolors. All of the construction is completed over a few days
