Refining a Search

• Boolean Operators– AND (narrows search, retrieving records containing all of the terms)– OR (broadens search, retrieving records containing any of the terms)– NOT (excludes terms from a search, retrieving records that do not contain the term

following it.)

• Truncation/Wildcard– * system* = returns records on system, systems, systematic– ? wom?n = returns records on both woman and women (singular and plural forms)

• Nesting – Parenthesis, () keep related terms together

If searching for an exact phrase, enclose phrase in quotation marks, “”

Purpose of Conducting a Literature Review

• Determine existing knowledge (what literature has been written on a topic)

• Identify gaps in existing knowledge• Identify research designs and methodologies• Identify other researchers in the areas of interest• Provide context for research (build on and add

meaning to existing literature)

Page 19: Northwest Community Mental Health Centre

Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2007

Literature vs. Systematic Review

• Literature Review– Account of what has

already been published on a topic

– Describe, summarize, evaluate, and clarify literature

– Is NOT merely a summary of existing literature

• Systematic Review– Brings together findings

from range of research interventions

– Aim is to identify as many relevant studies as possible around a topic

– Research process is systematic to minimize bias

A Brief Note on SFX

• Provides a link between several databases and full-text articles (note that NLM is NOT linked to SFX)

• **note: in New OVID SP, this feature will be implemented in January/February 2008**

• Not only does SFX automatically search the library catalogue for electronic holdings, it also notifies the user when material is not available online

• For more information, please consult http://library.ucalgary.ca/services/finditsfxfulltextservice/whatisfindit-sfx.php

OVID SP Basic Search(natural language processing)

• Free text search terms can be entered• Natural language processing • Topic, phrase, question, or keywords can be

entered• No need to worry about syntax (Boolean
