Summer in Manchester means the
return of the richest sporting event
in Vermont, as the Vermont Summer
Festival opens on July 4 at the Harold
Beebe Farm in East Dorset. The six-
week long hunter/jumper competi-
tion carries a purse of more than
$750,000 and attracts the best eques-
trian athletes, including Olympic
medalists, to vie for top honors.
This year’s festival will feature
courses created by six of the world’s
best course designers. Steve Stephens,
co-course designer at the 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games, will design the
Grand Prix ring during the third
week of competition. Ken Krome,
assistant course designer for the 2010
FEI World Equestrian Games in
Lexington, KY, will set the course in
the Grand Prix ring during the fourth
week. Designers Alan Wade, Chris
Brandt, Michel Vaillancourt and Eric
