Thank You from the Pettys!

What a great party! What a wonderful loving family!

Thank you Martha Ruiz for putting together a fabulous retirement party for us. It was beyond our wildest dreams. Fred Rhode and the Soul Food crew made it delicious as well and great fun. Everto Ruiz for the Mariachis. To everyone who put in the effort to surround us with such abundant love, we offer our heart-filled thanks!

Our five years here have flown by all too fast, but you have filled them with love and hard work, grace and forgiveness, and we will always remember NUMC as a very special place in our ministry.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Pastor Karen’s UpdateWill we be seeing the children in church? Why aren’t the children in church?

I have been asked these questions in various forms several times since Sunday July 12th when we began asking parents/care givers to bring children directly to the Sunday School classroom (Fireside Room) and sign them in before the worship service begins.

I’d like to share with you all what I have shared with the parents. We now have a sign-in and sign-out sheet for parents/care givers as they drop off and pick up kids at Sunday School. This helps us provide extra safety and security for our kids.

Sunday School teachers will be in the room & ready for the kids to come by 8:45am (for the 9am service) and 10:45am (for the 11am service). The children’s worship songs & Sunday School Lessons begin at 9am and 11am, however, we have music playing and a fun activity for kids as they arrive each Sunday. This allows kids to fellowship with one another and get settled in (into the classroom & our time together) in a more natural and relaxed manner.

We are excited about this change because it gives us the time we need to have worship song(s), offering (we are collecting for the Heifer Project and have now collected over $200 towards our $500 goal), prayer and a full & fun Sunday School Lesson with the kids in the Fireside Room each Sunday.

*On Communion Sunday we will still bring the kids up to the sanctuary to participate in communion.

*In the Fall we anticipate scheduling one Sunday a month or one Sunday every other month where the kids would come up to the sanctuary near the end of the service and do a sort of Benediction (perhaps in a variety of forms-but defi nitely sharing their worship/learning from Sunday School in praise of God and the sending forth of the people).

We will also begin including children & youth more fully in the life of the church by inviting them into the rotations of greeters, liturgists, communion servers, ushers etc.-as is appropriate for their age and abilities and after giving them training.

In the meantime, please be patient with us as we try this new way. And, please know that even though we have asked and encourage parents to bring their children to Sunday School (because we think they will have fun with each other, learn about Jesus, and experience the love of God and for God in song & prayer & bible stories), children are always welcome in all of our worship services. I will be on vacation August 2nd and 9th, however, I look forward to seeing everyone again on Sunday August 16th!

Peace and Blessings, Pastor Karen

On Sunday July 12, in addition to singing and dancing to worship songs, giving our offering, joining in prayer, and watching a brief video we had time to act out our bible story of the Ten Lepers! (Luke 17:11-19)

We were also able to make Heart Maps showing the things we’ve learned about God and can store in our hearts as well as how we can give love and respect to God!

UMCOR School Kits - We Need Your Help!

The United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR) distributes “school kits” to children around the world following disasters - earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, tornados, fl oods, fi res, etc.

In September, a joint Northridge-Reseda UMC mission team will go to the UMCOR Depot in Salt Lake City to help assemble “disaster relief kits.” In addition to the “health kits” recently collected by the UMW, we will also be taking “school kit” items collected by the NUMC congregation and by the 2015 NUMC Vacation Bible School families during the month of July.

Imagine the Change

You have been changing the world with that change that you have been donating. Hundreds of dollars in coins have been put to very good use in world changing projects. One can only imagine the long term good that will take place.

A new opportunity has arisen. We are joining forces with the IMAGINE NO MALARIA campaign. This project is already underway and provides mosquito netting and education in affected areas of the world. Imagination can become reality. Thousands of lives will be saved and much human suffering will be eliminated.

The nearby picture shows coin boxes that have already replaced the jars in the narthex. The $100 bill merely represents how that change counts up; although we would certainly be pleased to fi nd one in one of those boxes. Also, change in the traditional jars is always very welcome. Your change can and will CHANGE THE WORLD.

Lay Ministry Impacting Others’ Lives

We are all role models, and we all can and should have a positive impact on someone’s life. God has placed each of us where we are for a reason: within our spheres of infl uence at work, in our neighborhoods, in our families. He wants us to touch lives wherever He leads us. Whether you are a friend to a bullied boy in middle school, a ray of light in your neighborhood book club, a supportive coach for a high school team, an available shoulder for someone at a time of loss, or a hand held out to a child looking for a little hope, we can all change the course of our nation and world, one life at a time, for the rest of our lives. Tony Dungy, Quiet Strength

Be A Welcoming ChurchThe months seem to come and go all too quickly; one leading into another. We no sooner turn the page on the calendar and it’s time to change it again. None of us like change. We like the way things are even if they aren’t perfect. As Shakespeare reminds us, “we rather bear the ills we have, then fly to others we know not of.” But if the day didn’t change into night and the night back into day, we would never see another beautiful sunrise. The caterpillar has to change into a butterfly to become beautiful. And so change has come to our church. On

July 5th, we welcomed Reverend Joseph Choi, his wife Esther, and their children David and Ellie. With joyful anticipation, we look forward as he leads us on a new spiritual pathway. Like the caterpillar, to be beautiful we must change.

Where’s Your Name Badge? We are curious and can’t wait to get to know our new pastor, Rev. Joseph Choi and his family. They will want to get to know you, as well. You can help by wearing your name badge. We already know the Pastor’s name, so let’s help him know our names, too.

Welcome!

Thank You!To our dear friends of NUMC: Your cards, emails, phone calls, prayers and food were deeply appreciated. It is said that one cannot choose family, only friends. We are fortunate to have chosen friends who have become our family.

9If you haven’t gotten a chance to see the plans yet, here’s a small sample.

Turf Removal Update from the Board of Trustees

We are very excited to announce our Turf Removal proposal has been approved by the SoCal Water Smart program! When we submitted the proposal in April the rebate would have covered all of the turf removal, new drought tolerant plants, planting and irrigation. It would not have covered other upgrades we would like to make to the Pine Grove or the rock and excavation for the proposed dry creek beds.

In May the rebate program ran out of money and our proposal was in the pile to look through; We didn’t know if we would see any funds for the rebate program. They did reinstitute the program later that month but at a reduced rate. We were happy to receive our approval on July 20th, but the rebate will not cover the entire turf removal and plant replacement we had originally planned for. As you read this the Trustees are working

with the District Union to meet that gap, but we need to work quickly - we must complete the work and submit our final documentation by November 17th!

This project will make our campus look more lush, while using less water, saving money and being good stewards to our planet. We will not get another chance to be handed $44,000 in rebates for a project like this. While the Trustees are working to meet the gap, we are hoping that the congregation, over the coming months will step up to provide the funds for the rock and Pine Grove upgrades.

If we are successful in meeting the funding gap we will also be inviting volunteers to help with planting on a few All-Church work days. We hope that you will be involved in this revitalizing project whether it is with your funds or your sweat.

Tandy Wilson, Chair of Trustees

HIPAADoes that sound like a member of the hippopotamus family or a funky dance?

• HIPAA is the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The primary goal of the law is to make it easier for people to keep health insurance, protect the confidentiality and security of healthcare information and help the healthcare industry control administrative costs.

• HIPAA is divided into different titles or sections that address a unique aspect of health insurance reform. Two main sections are Title I dealing with Portability and Title II that focuses on Administrative Simplification as follows:

• Portability: This section allows individuals to carry their health insurance from one job to another so that they do not have a lapse in coverage. It also restricts health plans from requiring pre-existing conditions on individuals who switch from one health plan to another.

• Administrative Simplification: This section is the establishment of a set of standards for receiving, transmitting and maintaining healthcare information and ensuring the privacy and security of individual identifiable information.

• The HIPAA electronic data requirements are meant to encourage the health care industry to move the handing and transmission of patient information from manual to electronic systems in order to improve security, lower costs, and lower the error rate. However, the main focus on this page is the Privacy provisions of HIPAA.

• Privacy: HIPAA provides for the protection of individually identifiable health information that is transmitted or maintained in any form or medium. The privacy rules affect the day-to-day business operations of all organizations that provide medical care and maintain personal health information. Who Must Comply? HIPAA requires the following entities to comply:

• Health Care Providers: Any provider of medical or other health Services that bills or is paid for healthcare in the normal course of business is a “provider”. Health care includes preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative, maintenance, or palliative care, and counseling, services, assessment, or procedure with respect to the physical or mental condition, or functional status of an individual.

• Health Care Clearinghouse: Businesses that process or facilitate the processing of health information received from other businesses are “clearinghouses”. It includes groups such as physician and hospital billing services.

• Health Plans: Individuals or group plans that provide or pay the cost of medical care and include both Medicare and Medicaid programs are “health plans”.

• Importance: Now what does that mean for all of us? In order for our spouse or children to get medical information or files that we want them to have, we must give authorization. If this information is not in place, our doctors will not be able to share medical information with our loved ones. The easiest way to deal with this is to have the HIPAA document as part of our Advance Health Care Directive (formerly referred to as a Power of Attorney for Health Care).

• NOTE: If you do not have an Advance Health Care Directive as part of your estate planning documents we have a clear and concise form from the California Medical Association. Please see Char Anderson or Jo-Ann Seitzinger to obtain a copy.
