NORTH EAST WEEKLY 19th June 2014 www.northeastweekly.co.uk Est. 1997 Issue 858 Police Scotland is appealing for information following three fires in Peterhead during the early hours of Sunday 15 June. The fires occurred at Peterhead Bowling Club on Victoria Road and the buildings of Chandlers International Ltd and Ken Cassels Ltd on Wilson Street and as a result, have sustained significant damage. The incident is believed to have happened between 3am and 4am on Sunday. Police would like to speak with two males who were seen in the area at the time. They are described as being aged between 16 and 25 of slim build, one wearing a dark coloured jacket and dark baseball cap, the other wearing a light jacket and xxx Detective Sergeant Martin MacDougall said: "This was a senseless act that has caused considerable damage to the Peterhead Bowling Club and other buildings. Our enquiries are at an early stage and we are appealing for anyone with information that may help with our investigation to come forward." Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Station Manager Gordon Riddel said: "Deliberate fire-setting is an offence, don't accept it – report it. Fire related anti-social behaviour risks lives and impacts every community. "As well as potentially delaying our attendance at a more serious incident, deliberate fire-setting can result in injury, property damage and environmental pollution. "Please do contact Police Scotland via the non-emergency number 101 to share information about anyone who you suspect may be involved in deliberately setting fires. Meanwhile, Police are also investigating a wilful fire raising which occurred at about 2.45am on Friday, June 13, at Coral Eurobet, 6 Gallowhill Road, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. The incident involved a refuse bin which was located at the front of the premises being set on fire wilfully. The fire spread from the refuse bin, where it subsequently ignited the Coral store and the neighbouring 'Fish and Things' chip shop, causing damage to both properties. Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous.

The Scottish SPCA is urging pet owners not to leave their dogs in hot cars this summer, warning that last year a man in Scotland was convicted for doing so. Concerned members of the public have already been contacting the charity's animal helpline after seeing distressed dogs left inside warm vehicles. The Scottish SPCA is keen to remind the public that they may be risking their dog's life by leaving it in a hot car for even a short period of time. Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, "Most people know what it's like to get into a car after it's been sitting in the sun. It's unbear-able and we immediately roll down the windows or turn on the air conditioning. Imagine being trapped inside a hot vehicle wearing a fur coat for minutes, possibly hours, and you are some way to understanding how a dog left inside a hot vehicle feels. Many people might not realise that even on warm, cloudy days, cars can effectively turn into ovens and dogs can overheat in minutes. "Leaving a window open or providing water is simply not good enough. Dogs can't sweat the way humans do and need to pant to cool down which can lead to severe dehydration and hyperventilation. "We run our 'dogs die in hot cars' campaign every year but we continue to receive a large numbers of calls from concerned members of the public each summer and we fear some owners don't fully appreciate the danger they are putting their pets in.
HMRC FUND RAISING Staff at the HMRC office in Aberdeen have been taking steps to
get healthy while also fundraising for Scotland's Health Charity,
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.
To get things started a group of staff took part in the Baker
Hughes 10k in Aberdeen on the 18th of May. With the aim to
raise £500 for the charity they managed to double their target to
over a brilliant £1,000 - and their fundraising doesn't stop there.
The office also collected together items to donate to the CHSS
store in Aberdeen and are encouraging as many staff members
as possible to join up for the Dee Don Walkathon, which takes
place October 4th along the Aberdeen Beach Promenade.
To further encourage employees' good health, HMRC staff have
also been involved with CHSS's Health Promotion Scheme
which works with organisations to offer free blood pressure
checks and health advice for staff.
Paul Corrigan, CHSS Fundraising Manager for the North and
North East of Scotland said
"It's just fantastic to have this support from staff working for HMRC in Aberdeen who are taking such a proactive approach to their
health as well as raising vital funds and awareness for CHSS in a variety of different ways. We really value their support very much
indeed and their ongoing fundraising will without any doubt have a very positive impact on the quality of life of the people that we
support across the North East of Scotland who are living with the effects of debilitating illness."
