Dublin. Tel: 8•400•200 • [email protected] Grow Your Business See page 20 There is a possibility that residents of the North County may be in line for some reduction in their property tax bills from next year. However, it all depends on the local authority being in a position to avail of 80 per cent of funds collected in the area. This arrangement is due to take place next year. This relief was to have been extended to 11 local authorities across the country, who have raised sufficient money from the household charge. However, fresh cuts to local authority funding, will mean these councils will not be in a position to pass on the reductions. It is planned that local authorities will be able to reduce the property tax by up to 15 per cent, in areas where sufficient funds have been gath- ered. The good news is that our local authority is one of only two in Dublin (the other being Dun Laoghaire/ Rathdown), that will have a surplus of money to pass on to residents. This is thought to be in the region of 3 million. Many will see this as a testa- ment to good money management, in an area where compliance with the property tax has been high. Speaking to the County Leader, Paul Reid, Chief Executive of the local authority said, “The process has to be worked through yet. The Government needs to make a decision on this. There will then be a public consultation process and the elected members will give it due consideration, regarding any variance to the current property tax base,” he concluded. The planned cut in property tax in the areas where there is a surplus, is one that is causing deep dissension within the coalition, Fine Gael wants local authorities, who benefit from the bigger tax takes, to use the extra money to pay for services funded by the exchequer. Labour, on the other hand, is eager to give hard-pressed house owners a break, by reducing the property tax. Possible Property Tax Relief For Local Residents Paul Reid, CEO Fingal County Council Little Molly McNally from Balbriggan, who is capturing the hearts of people all over the North County, has managed to cast a spell over the Dublin football team. This proposed development is a cause of great concern for residents in the adjoining estate of Seatown Villas, the oldest estate in Swords. Submissions closed last week, with a number of objections from residents, who now await the decision of the local authority. The County Leader spoke to some of the Seatown Villa residents, who articulated their concerns. They met on the green in the estate, which has long been a feature there, but now looks like it will be opened up to residents of the new development. They all recog- nise the need for the houses, but are concerned about the erosion of their privacy, as well as safety concerns for children, due to the increase in traffic volumes in this quiet estate. Another concern is the height of the duplex apartments, which they maintain are too high, and utterly inappropriate in such an area. The residents have the full support of local council- lors, Darragh Butler (FF) and Paul Mulville (NP). Seatown Villas resident, Thomas Lowndes said, “The plan is to build four apartments, eight one bed apart- ments, eight duplexes and 16 terraced houses. There will be three storey buildings, which is a bone of contention for us. We also do not want to share our green, which will happen due to the removal of the existing fence. Kids play football here, and with an open plan area, they will be in danger from increased traffic flow. If there was a wall constructed between the two estates, then that would be accept- able to us, just like it was in the old Mantua Park,” he said. Lowndes also said that a large part of the objection was that the proposed houses are not family oriented and will be used as buy to let, as opposed to families living there. Dolores Campion said, “We don’t object to new houses being built, but we don’t want three storey homes overlooking us. This means our privacy will be taken away. The removal of the fence is a huge issue for us all. There were mobile homes in there for many years, and we hardly knew they were there, but opening the whole area is not acceptable,” she said. Councillor Darragh Butler said, “This proposed devel- opment is totally out of keeping with the existing, long established mature estate of Seatown Villas, one of the iconic original Swords estates. Under no circum- stances can any development take place that results in the boundary fence being removed. The Seatown Villas open space belongs to Seatown Villas and the boundary fence must remain. Children must continue to be able to play on this open space, without being between two roads; without Seatown Villas becoming a short-cut to North Street, pubs, etc. This boundary fence must remain in place to save the distinct charac- teristic of Seatown Villas. The open space cannot be used simply as a selling point for this proposed new development that is totally out of character with the area. These are two distinct estates and must be main- tained,” he said. Councillor Paul Mulville was in agree- ment when he said: “Residents of Seatown Villas have raised serious concerns about the proposed develop- ment at the old Mantua Park site. Residents are not against housing being built at this location, but they have put forward their objections to a number of matters, including the proposed 3 storey height of the development, the impact it will have on the existing green space, and the potential increase in traffic, in an area already facing ongoing traffic difficulties related to the local school. Residents must be listened to as part of the planning process and they have my full support in this regards” he concluded. Skerries Girl IsYoung VolunteerOf The Year

This year’s award for YoungVolunteer of the Year went to localgirl Rebecca O’Reilly, a leader inForóíge Skerries. This annualaward honours the memory of JimQuigley and acknowledges thework of outstandingvolunteers. MartinRussell, chairpersonof the SkerriesC o m m u n i t yAssociation (SCA),presented the awardto her at the SCA’sAGM last week.Ever since theSkerries ForóigeYouth Club opened alittle over a yearago, Rebecca, 19,has been one of themost active leaders. Her dedication andfriendly manner withthe youth-clubmembers werementioned in hernomination, as was the fact thatshe only ever missed a Foróigeevent when she was sick. DeborahMurphy, secretary of the club, toldthe County Leader: “She is therefor the kids, no matter what theyneed and the kids know they cango to her for anything and oftenhave.”The judges were particularly

impressed with the dedicationRebecca has towards the club andits members. She goes out of herway to make everyone feel a partof the club each Wednesday.Rebecca has been on every tripwith Skerries Foróige and is doingeverything she can to get theminvolved with the community.Recently she gave up twoSaturdays to help build and paintbird boxes with five of the youngpeople for Skerries Tidy Towns, afact that was particularly stressed

by Mary Conway, Hon. Secretary ofthe SCA, who read the profileabout Rebecca at the AGM. Skerries Community Associationwishes Rebecca, who has recentlyfinished college and really wantsto continue her work within thecommunity, all the best in hercareer and is looking forward toher future involvement in Skerries.

Remarkable Mary ShowsThem The Way HomeAn 80 year old Balbriggan lady, has recorded an extraordinaryachievement recently. Mary Ryan, who is a member of BalbrigganGolf Club, has just won the Lady Captain’s prize at the club. This isthe flagship event of the golfing calendar, and to win it is awonderful achievement for any golfer. To win it as an 80 year old istruly remarkable, all the more so, given the fact that it was heldover two day of competitive golf.Sprightly Mary, who recently celebrated her 80th birthday, was thevery popular winner of the Lady Captain’s Prize. She carried 36points from day one, and added a whopping 43 to take the beau-tiful Orla de Bri sculpture presented by Lady Captain, SandyForsyth. What makes her achievement all the more remarkable is that Mary, who had previously played pitch and putt, only took up golf seri-ously, when she joined Balbriggan Golf Club in 2006. ‘Auntie Mary’as she is affectionately known in the golf club, is a true inspirationto all the members.

Lady Captain’s Prize winner, Mary Ryan (centre) is pictured prior totee off at Balbriggan Golf Club, with playing partners, Kitty Guinanand Aileen Noonan. The bike was the prize for anyone achieving ahole-in-one.

The resounding resilience of thepeople of Lusk came to the forlast week, as the planningpermission for the proposed forAnaerobic Digestion WasteProcessing Facility in the areawas refused. Much to the relief of the localresidents, the County Councilannounced their decision torefuse planning permission forthe anaerobic digestion wasteprocessing facility at Regeens,Lusk. The Council’s planningofficers listed seven reasons forrefusal. These included theincompatibility of the proposal

with the zoning of the area, therisk of adverse impact onRogerstown Estuary, a Natura2000 site, and the negativeimpact this would have on theamenities of the area and onproperty in the vicinity.Speaking to the County Leader,Chairman Lusk Still FightingWaste (a community groupestablished to oppose thedevelopment), John McLoughlin, said that everyone was “very, very pleased with the decision.”“There were several differentreasons why the planningpermission was refused, and

among them was the fact thatthe Council said they could notignore the public opposition tothe matter, and that they reallytook this on board, which wasgreat to see,” he explained. “It’sa credit to the people of Lusk, and furthermore it shows thatwe won’t just sit back and allowwaste facilities to be dumped inour town.” “On behalf of Lusk Still FightingWaste, we would like to thankeverybody who worked so hardto achieve this result, especiallythe almost 650 residents wholodged submissions with theCounty Council. We also want tothank and acknowledge thesupport received from LuskCommunity Council and localpublic representatives,” heconcluded.

Cameronsays he is in favour ofstaying in, subject to reform. While some in Brussels paint theUK as trouble makers, there aremany countries who empathise withtheir general point of view. Juncker is faced with managing theCommission and of responding toincreasing calls for reforms. Thesereforms may not sit easily with JeanClaude’s own inclinations. As a prac-

tical politician, he knows he mustmove, not only from the nominationprocess, but that he must now makethe system work. He says theCommission portfolios will beassigned on merit and if memberstates want key positions, they mustnominate persons of ability andexperience. So it is up to eachGovernment to decide if they wanttheir nominee to be a player or not.Juncker has also said he is preparedto work to find solutions to UKissues.Yet, things may be a little tense at

meetings of the Council. The postof President of the Council is

still to be filled. If whoeveris appointed is to ensurethat all member statesmove forward together,

the new President musthave skill, experience and

diplomacy. We havesuggested in the past that an Irish

nominee may well be best suited tothe role at this time. We understandthe UK and we are popular in Europecoupled to which we are good media-tors. Kenny’s meeting with Merkellast week will have discussed theposition. The question is has he gotthe nod for the green jersey to play.

Funding For LocalSports ClubsWelcomed Local TDs, James Reilly (FG) and Alan Farrell (FG),have both welcomed the recent announcement of 7million in Sports Capital Programme funding, whichis to be awarded to 24 sports clubs around the NorthCounty. “This announcement will provide a terrific boost tosports clubs throughout the North County, and it willprove to be very significant for our local economy,”said Farrell. “The fact that 24 clubs in the NorthCounty were successful in their bids, highlights thetremendous quality of these clubs and of sport ingeneral throughout the locality. As a result of this, the number of opportunities available for children tolearn about different sports and to excel in the sportof their choice will grow significantly.”Minister Reilly said, “We are determined to invest inlocal facilities. We understand the importance of thework carried out by local sports groups in ourcommunities and funding such as this supportsthem in that vital work. It assists clubs to build orimprove their facilities, and also enables them to buymuch needed sports equipment, which is reallygreat news,” he said. Unfortunately, due to the huge demand for theprogramme, not all of those clubs and projects whoapplied, will receive funding this year. Both TDsencourage any local clubs who have been disap-pointed this year, to reapply for the next round offunding.

The Dubs have beenfollowing Molly for the past number ofmonths, when Paul Flynn and BernardBrogan got in touch with us about theMolly McNally Miracle Trust. Manager JimGavin has been in contact with me andsaid he wanted to invite Molly to thematch, as the team’s special guest. It wasa wonderful occasion and we werebrought to the dressing room, where theplayers were brilliant and made a greatfuss over Molly. We were also invited tothe after match dinner at the GibsonHotel, which was brilliant. They couldn’thave done more, they’re a great bunch ofguys. Michael Darragh McAuley even

mentioned Molly on his twitter accountafterwards,” said a delighted Gerry. He also paid tribute to the Supportersgroup, Hill 16 Army, who have adoptedMolly as their mascot,. “Barry, Dave, Lizand Wayne are very involved in this and

have been great as well. Indeed they areorganising a huge fundraiser at theGibson Hotel in September,” said Gerry.Another boost for the Molly McNallyMiracle Trust, is that a judge inBalbriggan Court has nominated Molly’sas the nominated charity for money

donated in the court box. Gerry explainedhow this came about. “Local man, SeanKeenan swam from Alcatraz to SanFrancisco to raise funds, and hehappened to mention it to a local Gardafriend of his, who suggested the idea tothe judge, who was happy to go with it,“said Gerry. Some upcoming events in aid of Mollyinclude, a wine tasting event, hosted bySupervalu, which will take place in the

Katherine Zhai, SwordsMaybe, but I think it’s the same as cigarettes, no matter how high thetax is on them, people still buy them.

We asked, “Do you think sugar tax willhelp tackle obesity?”Q:

John O’Brien, SwordsNo, I just think it won’t be very useful, it won’t break the habit. They’lljust get used to the high prices and think that’s just the way it is now.

Eelco Degee, DonabateNo not really, I think it just means you’ll have to go a little bit moreinto your daily means to get them. But maybefor some people the tax might stop them frombuying it.

Paul Kelly, SwordsWell I have two friends with diabetes, because they’re always having

sugary drinks, so I think they should tax it.

Zoe Campbell, SwordsI don’t know. I don’t think the tax would really matter. A lot of peoplemight give out about the prices going up, but it wouldn’t stop themfrom actually buying them. It’s the same with cigarettes, their pricesare still going up, but people are addicted to them, it’s the same withthis.

Louise O’Riordan, SwordsYes I do. Well it may put you off if it was more expensive. But the

money should be going into something like physical education, butwhether it’s going to be, I don’t know.

Mel Ashe, SwordsNo. I think sugar’s like an addiction, and I don’tthink taxing sugary foods will help that. It’s like

smokers and cigarettes, they still go out and buy them. I think thatmoney would be far better spent put into a health and obesity

campaign, not a sugar tax.

Amit Daily, SwordsYes, well sugar’s bad for you anyway, you might get that buzz, but itdoesn’t give you real energy. It might have the public think twiceabout it, if they do see a higher tax.

Niamh Herbert, BalrotheryNo, I think regardless of the prices, if people want them, they’d buythem. Like the prices of cigarettes continues to go up, but it doesn’treally help.

Daire Doyle, SwordsNo probably not. People are going to carry on eating it regardless. It’s

cheap and has lots of sugar, high tax won’t stop that.

Niamh Carroll, SwordsNo. because they’ll still buy it regardless. If they want it, they’ll pay for

it. I think the best thing for them to do, is make the fast food restau-rants more expensive, and healthier food cheaper. It’s more expensive

for healthy food, that’s why so many people buyjunk food.

Amrit Sidhu

YOURVIEWWith reporter Amrit Sidhu

June Carron, SwordsNo, because people are still going to want to eat it. They’ll still findways to get it cheaper. And sugar’s in everything, so they’ll have to taxit all,

Barbara Flanagan, SwordsDefinitely not. I think it’s the same as cigarettes, people would stillbuy it. I don’t even think it would make people stop to think andconsider if they really wanted it.

Improvements To Senior AlertScheme “Worth Nothing”Chairperson of RushSenior Citizens, KathleenO’Brien, has hit back atthe recent announcementfrom Minister for theEnvironment, Phil Hogan, who said there have been“improvements made tothe Seniors AlertScheme.” The scheme was devised,so that older persons inthe community can feelsafe and secure in theirhomes. It helps to fundthe purchase of moni-tored personal alarms andother security items, andis essential to the elderlyaround the North County.

According to the minister, the allocation of funds forthe Seniors Alert Schemefor 2014 is €2.35 millionwhich is, he says “suffi-cient to meet currentdemand levels” for thisimportant scheme.Kathleen however, hassaid that this statement“couldn’t be further fromthe truth” and told theCounty Leader that these“improvements” wereworth almost nothing tothe elderly people living inRush and the rest of theNorth County. “First of all, that figure of

€2.35 million has beenhalved; the allocatedamount used to bearound €4 million, sostraight away we’re at adisadvantage,” she said.“Then take into accountthat, not only is that anationwide figure (i.ewhen it’s divided upbetween all the varioustowns, each communitygets very little), it’s afigure that’s been in placefrom 2013 to 2015, sowe’re not getting anythingextra. The amount isnowhere near enough - itdoesn’t even come close,”she continued, angrily. “I’m speaking on behalf of

all the elderly, not only inRush, but in the entireNorth County, and I cantell you that residents arein a terrible state aboutthe current situation. Notonly have we no Gardastation in the area, butmore and more cuts keepbeing made, and it is theelderly who suffer,” said afurious Kathleen. She

pointed out theGovernment’s recent deci-sion to axe their tele-phone allowance in theircurrent budget, resultingin many elderly beingunable to afford their tele-phone lines, losing theirPendent Safety Alarms asa result. “This was justone of a long line of cutsbeing made, and theelderly are sick of beinggiven the short straw.“She continued, “I want toask and challenge PhilHogan or any other publicofficial who is just vying

for votes or goodpublicity, to actually cometo Rush and see for them-selves the state things arein, before simply makingthese statements of howthese so-called “improve-ments” are making thingsbetter for the elderly,”Kathleen said, deter-minedly. “They reallyhaven’t a clue. But I’llcontinue to fight and be avoice for them, and I’dwelcome the chance toshow anyone inGovernment the reality ofall this,” she concluded.

Here in the NorthCounty, we havebeen blessed withsome beautifulsummer weather oflate. Locals havebeen flocking to our pristine localbeaches to take full advantage of thesunny spells, because we never knowjust how long we’ll get them for! However, we would always encourageall our local residents to take extra carewhile having fun on the beach, particu-larly when in the water. Unfortunately, every year around the locality, we hearabout the tragedies of lives lost at sea,and this year, we hope that we can avoidthis, by passing on some marine andwater safety tips from the Skerries RNLI.

“The RNLI is committed to preventingtragedies in and around the water byraising awareness and increasing safebehaviour,” Nuala from the local RNLIgroup told the County Leader. “Ourmarine safety top tips are: to wear a life-jacket, be sure to have the appropriatetraining, always carry a means for callingfor help, check your engine and fuel, make sure you tell others where you aregoing and finally, check the weather andtides before you set out.” Shecontinued: “Our beach safety top tipsare: to make sure you swim at a life-guarded beach between the red andyellow flags, avoid using inflatables instrong winds or rough seas, checkweather and tide times before you go, ifyou get in trouble, stick your hand in theair and shout for help, if you seesomeone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”

It’swonderful landscaped gardens and woodland, aswell as it’s renowned cuisine at the keenestprices, make it a unique and highly sought aftervenue for weddings, meetings and events orfamily celebrations. The hotel has also receivedthe Certificate of Excellence for 2013 in the TripAdvisor Awards. Indeed, this restaurant is nostranger to awards, winning numerous awardsfrequently and is usually accredited by popularfood critics from far and near. The hotel was the former Kilmessan railwaystation and Chris and Thelma have retained muchof the charming character of the original railwaystation in the hotel itself. For example, the BridalSuite is the old Signal Box, which once housedabout 60 signals. Now it provides luxuriousaccommodation for the bride and groom. Anotherunique feature about the hotel, is that they cater

for outdoor wedding cere-monies, weather permit-ting. The wedding cere-mony can take place onthe original turning tableand the beautiful gardensprovide the perfect back-drop to what is a trade-mark location for outdoorweddings.Chris explained that theyopened the restaurant 30years ago, in 1984 and thathe and Thelma opened, what was their private resi-dence, as a guesthouse, before transforming it intothe lovely hotel that it istoday. The Station House Hotelhas spacious and comfort-able, clean and wellappointed bedrooms, which are always in greatdemand by weddingguests, eager to extend

their stay at the hotel. A number of bedrooms aresituated in the old original engine repair building.Chris is very proud of the great wedding traditionthat this hotel has gained over the years. “Lastyear alone, we did 147 weddings in the functionroom, which is just three per week. Our Signalrestaurant is also extremely busy, due to our

reputation for great food. We only use the finest, freshest meats which is supplied by Pallas Foods. Our lamb is supplied by Donnelly’s, a localbutcher shop in Kilmessan. We make sure that allof our food suppliers provide us with only thevery best. As a result of this, we never get acomplaint about our meat, only compliments,”said Chris proudly.Sunday lunch is another highlight at the hotel, withhuge demand from 12.30pm until 5pm. Dinner isthen served from 5pm onwards. The Station Houseis also very popular for other family events, likeConfirmations and Communions and Chris seesthis as a special occasion for all, particularly thechild. ‘We give each child a card and a tenner, which we have been doing for many years now,and it has proven to be a very popular,” he said. The popularity of this gorgeous hotel, is testa-ment to the imagination and hard work that Chrisand Thelma and the entire Slattery family haveput in over the past 30 years, and there seemslittle doubt that the success story that is TheStation House Hotel, will continue for many yearsto come.

Home - Kitchen

It’s easy to get preparedfor the summer in thekitchen. Most likelyyou’ll be inspired by

longer days; cooking abit lighter food andperhaps trying out somenew recipes, so the freshsmell filling the housewill give a hint of newnot only to your taste

buds, but also to thewhole house. Why notalso get more into fresh-ness by growing yourown herbs? One of thebest ways to cheer upyour kitchen for the

warmer days to come, isto let the light flow in.So, leave the dark, heavycurtains for winter andgo for some thin, translu-cent fabric instead. When changing the

curtains and blinds, think about all the springcolours and choose thelightest and brightestoptions. Browse aroundthe local decorationshops here in the NorthCounty to get someinspiration and don’t betoo shy to try out some-thing totally new, ortrust the classic summercolours such as green oryellow and white.

Bathroom

The same tricks can workwonders as well in thebathroom as in any otherroom of the house, sostart off by trying to

refresh with little things. So, get your towelsupdated and see if it’dbe about time to getsome new, differentcoloured ones. Findsome matching storageboxes, as that’s the onesure way to keep yourbathroom clean.Organise the thick andheavy toiletries behindthe shelves and replacethe products with lighterones. If there’s a little window in your bath-room, try changing to anew type of glass if youfeel this is needed, oreven just place someornaments close to thewindow ledge.
