T : 01-8401944 E: [email protected] Alan Redmond Proprietor There is great news to report on the progress of little Molly McNally, the seven year old Balbriggan girl who suffers from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Her delighted father, Gerry told the County Leader that Molly is now in remission, after a long struggle fighting the disease, explaining that Molly’s consultant in Crumlin Children’s Hospital, Cormac Owens gave Molly the all-clear last week. Gerry spoke about the massive struggle that brave little Molly had to endure to get to remission. “The biggest scan Molly has is her radi- ation scan. This scan shows cancer cells and the first time she had this scan in Crumlin, her cancer cells lit up like a Christmas tree. The last time Molly had that scan was last June, when there was a tiny cluster on Molly’s skull, but they were dead cells. However, with neuroblastoma, they look dead, but the scan she had last week, there was nothing, no residue in her skull.” Molly’s treatment programme was for a period of 17 months, with 8 rounds of chemotherapy, then surgery on the primary tumour, radiotherapy and then a bone marrow transplant. All this was included in the 17 month treatment programme. “Molly did the 8 rounds of chemotherapy, after which there was a tiny percentage in her bone marrow. However, there were cancer lesions on her arms, one on each leg and on her skull. They resisted the 8 rounds of chemotherapy, so we had to go outside of her programme. They brought in another dose of heavy chemotherapy. They did two rounds of that and they assessed her with a scan and the lesions were still there. At this point, things were looking bleak for Molly. They did another two doses of this heavy chemo and the 6 lesions were still there.” Gerry continued, “Molly couldn’t have her bone marrow transplant, as long as they were there. It was decided then to put Molly on a Beacon trial, which was available in Crumlin. It is a combination of different types of chemo and Molly was put on a twin dose of chemo. She did this twice and eventually 3 of the lesions disap- peared. After more rounds, she became tired and weak with the chemo. A few weeks passed and the consul- tant said he wanted to do one more round of this chemo. Luckily, it stunned the lesions and it was decided Molly could go for trans- plant. Eventually, Molly was given the all-clear and there were tears of joy all round. “Her consultant’s determination was incredible and her immunotherapy has 14 weeks to run, which will take us up to Christmas. If Molly is still in remission, she will go to Michigan in USA early next year for further treatment, where the success rate is very high. Crumlin have performed a miracle for us,” said Gerry. A new documentary will be shown on RTE about Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, starting this Thursday. Molly will be featured on the show on Thursday, 17th September at 10.15pm, which should be of great interest to many locals, who have been captivated by this brave little girl’s road to recovery. This area has been the bane of drivers from the North County for many years, as they experienced terrible delays here on their journeys to and from the city. This news will come as music to their ears. Opposition politicians from the North County, however, have poured scorn over the news and have criticised the Minister for delaying his deci- sion on a transport system for the North County. Many of them are convinced that getting rid of this pinch point clears the last remaining obstacle to the delivery of the Swiftway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), or bendy bus, signalling the death knell for the light rail system. For many years now, hard pressed commuters in the North County have been promised the delivery of a world class transport system serving Swords and the airport, by successive governments. The moment Leo Varadkar, then a representative for the western part of Swords, became Minister for Transport, Metro North was shelved. Now it appears that the present incumbent is kicking the can down the road, and keeping us all in suspense, as we await his decision on which transport system he will choose for us. Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF) didn’t pull his punches when he spoke to the County Leader. He said, “I’m at a loss to know what the delay is in Minister Donohoe’s announcement of the plans for public transport for the North County. We were supposed to get the answer in June and it’s now September. The delay is inexcusable and we need the government to deliver light rail, without further delay,” he said. While accepting that the removal of the pinch point in Drumcondra is a welcome development for North County commuters, O’Brien said that if this is only being addressed to make way for a bendy bus service from Swords, that would be highly unaccept- able. I don’t think that North County Dublin and Swords, in particular, should accept some- thing that, frankly, wouldn’t be acceptable on the southside.” “My worry is that if they announce Swiftway as a project, they are not going to spend 300 million on a temporary measure, that’s for sure. If they get the Swiftway bendy bus in place, we’ll never see light rail. Swiftway couldn’t work without this pinch point being removed. Perhaps this was the reason for the Minister’s delay in announcing the transport plan for the North County,” said O’Brien. “This Government have had four-and-a-half years to fulfil a promise to deliver Metro North and that’s what they said they would do, including previous governments to be fair. Anthony Lavin, have been monitoring closely. After many yearsof false starts, and delays in the completion ofthe legal process relating to the acquisition ofthe lands to house the Fry Model Collection, itis great that this development is nowprogressing and that a clear timeframe hasbeen put in place by the County Council,”Farrell added. In response to our articleabout Blackbridges, Swords inlast week’s edition of theCounty Leader, Fingal CountyCouncil have contacted us toexplain the reason why designand replacement work wascarried out on this bridge.A Council spokesperson said,‘In 2013 Fingal County Councilengaged consultants to carryout bridge inspections on 123rural bridges throughout thecounty. Each bridge wasinspected in accordance with

the NRA’s Bridge ManagementSystem. The consultantsfound that the bridge onSeatown Lane (also known asBlackbridges), needed to bereplaced as a matter ofurgency, due to serious healthand safety concerns regardingits structural stability.” “Adesign and replacementprocess for the bridge wasundertaken and as part of thisprocess, Fingal County Council

liaised widely with local resi-dents and businesses, particu-larly those which relied on thebridge as their primary meansof access to their homes/premises.”The statement continued, “InOctober 2014, constructionwork began on the new bridgeat Seatown Lane and byChristmas 2014 the bridge wasre-opened to traffic and allworks were completed by theend of January 2015.” “Thewidth of the new bridge is thesame as the original and itwas also possible to constructa footpath on the upstreamside, where previously therewas none. Unfortunately, itwas not possible to retain thebadly weathered capping fromthe original bridge,” the state-ment concluded.

DAA Clarifies AirportCity SpeculationAs reported in thenational press andradio over theweekend, a massivedevelopment isplanned by DublinAirport Authority (daa)to build a 3.2 millionsquare foot airportstyle city, adjacent tothe airport. Nationalmedia speculated thatthe project will beconstructed over a 15year period, in whatwill be one of Ireland’slargest ever buildingprojects.

The report says thatthe new development,to be called DublinAirport Central, willcost a whopping €1billion to build, will bemade up primarily ofnew offices, hotels, cafes and recreationalfacilities, creating ahigh-tech airport city. The size and scale ofthe new project isexpected to be approx-imately three timesthe size of DundrumShopping centre. However, when

contacted by theCounty Leader, a DAAspokesperson toldthis newspaper thatthe numbers specu-lated in the nationalmedia are completelyincorrect. “This is a 25-30 year project and ifwe delivered 60,000sq metres of develop-ment in the first 10years we would bedoing well.” The statementcontinued, “DAA hasstated since 2013 thatit intends to redevelop

a 70-acre site atDublin Airport over a25-30 year timeframe. The site in question, which has high tech-nology zoning, is notrequired for directairport operations. It istoo early at this stageto speculate on thequantum of develop-ment that may takeplace over the nextthree decades. Anydecision to proceedwith the commercialdevelopment of thissite is dependent on anumber of planningand commercialissues. Marketdemand over timewould be a key consid-eration for the poten-tial 30-year develop-ment programme.”

main problems is thatthere is no car parkingfacility here. Thismeans that cars haveto park on the side of avery busy road, just afew hundred yardsfrom a Dublin Bus andSwords Expressterminal. These buseshave to drive way outon to the other side ofthe road, to avoid theparked cars, making itvery hazardous forpeople and especiallychildren.”“I spoke with some ofthe bus drivers andthey confirmed that itis a very hazardouslocation to drivethrough,” he said.Lynam feels that theopening up of the oldpublic road beside thepitches could be usedby the club to accesspotential car parkingspaces. “What we’re

looking for is to getthe council to giveover some of the landthey own here, to facil-itate a parking spaceto get the kids off theroad.”“Lighting can beinstalled here, wherepeople can walk theirdogs. At night, thisarea was verysecluded and lonelyand fly tipping washappening regularlyunder the cover ofdarkness. Theroadway leads toWindmill cottages, andI will be pressing thecouncil to providelighting here. It canalso provide access toa possible car parkarea for Swords ManorFC.” he said.

Cllr. LynamMulville Wants To Safeguard ResidentialDwellings In Swords Paul Mulville, Independent councillorfor the Swords local electoral area, has signalled his intention to bringforward an amendment to the draftCounty Development to change thezoning of houses in St. Colmcille’sestate, Swords, located behind theCounty Hall, from “major town centre”to “residential”.

“I’ve received many representationsregarding the fact that a number ofresidential houses in and around St.Colmcille’s estate, in the middle ofSwords, appear empty. On lookinginto the matter, it appears that aportion of this estate was zoned“town centre” in the 2011-2017County Development Plan. This Ibelieve has led to a sense of uncer-tainty around the future of these resi-dential units,” he explained. “Approximately 28 residentialdwellings, mainly located along St.Colmcille’s Drive, but also alongSeatown Road and Chapel Lane, weregiven this “town centre” zoning bycouncillors in the 2011-2017 plan, asopposed to a normal residentialzoning. I intend to bring forward amotion at the appropriate phase ofthis new development plan, when thedraft plan is published, to address thematter and ensure that a residentialzoning is restored to this location,” headded.Mulville believes if the estate wasrenamed, there would be certaintyrestored and a greater chance to fillthe empty houses. “I believe that this“town centre” zoning has led to a situ-

ation where residential houses in theheart of Swords have been left empty, and at the same time, so many fami-lies in this locality are crying out forhouses to rent,” he continued.“People cannot believe it when theysee boarded up houses, and so nearto the County Hall. I fully agree withthe need to provide for the future ofSwords as a major town, but we mustalso ensure the protection of residen-tial dwellings close to the towncentre.”“In particular I have been informed byCouncil management that the Councilitself part owns one of these residen-tial units, and I am calling for everypossible step to be taken to ensurethis unit is brought in to the Council’shousing stock, given the very highnumber of people awaiting councilhousing,” he concluded.

In a recent report, one-third of pensioners havenot made a will. Haveyou ever thought whatwould happen to yourhome and assets if youdie? If you are parentingalone, have you everthought what wouldhappen to your childrenif you die? Have youthought to whom youwould like to leave yourbelongings if you die?How has the lawchanged now regardingwills for new civil part-ners and for potentialgay married couples?Well now is your chanceto find out more andease your concerns. TheFingal CitizensInformation Service withits four centres inSwords, Skerries,

Balbriggan and Malahideare delighted toannounce a special willsmonth (9th September2015 - 9th October 2015)during which free willsinformation packs areavailable from eachcentre. A will is probablyone of the most impor-tant documents duringyour lifetime, especiallyif you want to leave someof your inheritance to aspecial person or organi-sation. In conjunction with solic-itors in the North County, the Citizens InformationService has negotiated aspecial “reduced” ratefor wills written withsolicitors during thismonth. DevelopmentManager, AndrewMcCann said, “I believe it

is our role to ensure thepublic can make aninformed decision on thewishes of their inheri-tance, and to whom theywish to leave it. Bypromoting this issue you

can gain valuable infor-mation and / or seekindependent legalopinion (from local solici-tors), at a speciallyreduced rate during thismonth only. For some, this may provide peaceof mind and clarify anymisunderstandings,” hesaid. So what is a will, andwhat is required? A willis a simple documentwhich must be in writing(not on CD or DVD)clearly stating the wishesof that person regardingtheir estate / assets inthe case of their death. The document must besigned and witnessed by2 people. It is advisablethat the witnesses beindependent. If thewitnesses are beneficia-ries, the will is still valid, although the beneficia-ries may lose out if theyare to gain from the will. You may decide tochange your will as manytimes as you like, but it isvery important to eitherdestroy the old one, oramend the original(codicil). So when should youchange your will? If youmarry or register a civilpartnership, and you hada will when you weresingle, this will automati-cally become void. If youlegally separate (subjectto your separation agree-ment), you may need tochange your will, or ifdivorce, you are nolonger spouses / civilpartners for the purpose

of inheritance. So why should I make awill? If you do not makea will, your estate isdivided automaticallyunder the rules of intes-tacy (natural succession

rights). In some cases, people may be happy forthis to happen. What thismeans is that if you aremarried or have a civilpartnership, and have nochildren, your spouse /civil partner will receiveyour full assets. If youhave children, a spouse /civil partner is entitled to2/3 of the estate, and theremaining childrenreceive 1/3 equallybetween them. If youmake a will, you maydecide not to leaveanything to your children(which you have a legalright to do, if you sowish), and at minimumyou must leave yourspouse / civil partnerhalf of your estate. Youmay decide to leave yourestate to a favouritechild, grandchild etc. orto a charity or organisa-tion. It is important ifleaving it to charity toclearly state the correctbusiness name and theiraddress and the amount(if specified) in the will. Ifthere are no survivingrelatives, and you haveno will, your inheritancegoes to the State. All questions pertainingto wills including gaymarriage, civil partner-ships and tax implica-tions are answered alongwith a list of solicitors inyour area providing adiscounted “special”rate for the wills monthonly. Copies of the packare available from yourlocal Citizens InformationCentre.

Country Crest is very proud to sponsor theInternational Employer of the Year CorporateResponsibility Award this year. This was aneasy category for us to choose, as it’s anarea that we place great emphasis on in ourown business. We appreciate that we make aliving from the land and that we need to giveback in whatever way we can - in our case,by way of involvement in various sustainableagricultural projects. Ireland has tremen-dous agricultural advantages, but othercountr ies can lack water, proper soi l ,

cl imate, infrastruc-ture and the know-how to benefit fromfarming in the way that Ireland does. Ouraim is to improve people’s lives. We areachieving this by facilitating farming enter-prises, promoting food sustainability andcontributing to raising the standard of livingfor those participating in deserving projectsin less developed communities. We wish allthe participants in this year’s awards thevery best of luck.

awards certainlybenefits your busi-ness, where you arerecognised for the quality and profession-alism of your work. This gives people moreconfidence to come to you, thus creatingnew customers. All companies that arenominated for awards are special, but thewinners maybe have a small edge over theirrivals. We are delighted to be part of theChamber of Commerce and to be able tosponsor this award,” he said.

Transplant Team Irelandarrived home from theWorld TransplantGames in Argentina toDublin airport recently. The four person teambrought with them ahaul of 13 medals, including seven gold, four silver and twobronze. After a longjourney home whichstarted on Sunday, thekidney and liver trans-plant recipients weregreeted at Dublinairport’s Terminal 1 by alarge gathering ofsupporters includingfamily, friends, andfellow transplant recipi-ents. Despite theteam’s small size,Ireland was placed 15thon the medals table outof 44 countries at theGames, which involved

just under 800 (799)organ transplant partici-pants. Peter Heffernan, from Skerries was oneof the stand outperformers on the Irishteam. Peter received akidney transplant in2011 and is a keenswimmer. He won twogold medals, in the 50mbackstroke, and 100mbackstroke, as well as abronze medal for the100m freestyle event inhis 50-59 year old agecategory.Speaking to the CountyLeader, Peter, who is acivil engineer based inSkerries, was clearlydelighted with hiswonderful achievement, when he said, “TheGames gave me an over-whelming sense of thegift I have received from

my donor and family. The hundreds ofathletes who haveparticipated in thesegames all testify to thissense of gratitude. Oneof the highlights of theweek for me was whenErica, who is fromArgentina, said thatattending these Gameshas changed her, asthey have opened hereyes to the importanceof organ donation andshe will talk to all herfamily and friends aboutcarrying a donor card. She said that all theathletes were inspiring.”He continued, “As acountry, we punchedway above our weight, with only four athletes,as well as our teammanager, Colin Whitefrom Balbriggan. Youare always consciousabout your donor andtheir family and the

overwhelming feeling ofgratitude to them, eventhough you do not knowtheir identity. It’sremarkable that, even intheir darkest hour, theystill think of others. Thisis a second chance forme and the Games are away of promotingpeople to carry donorcards to help others, like me, by providing agift of life.” “Somebodyhas given me a gift oflife and it’s very impor-tant to do my best withthis gift. I chose to do itthrough sport, espe-cially swimming. I usedto swim and play waterpolo for ClontarfSwimming Club, beforemy transplant, now Iswim for SkerriesSwimming Club,” saidPeter, who received agreat welcome on hisreturn to his home townof Skerries.

We Must All ShareWe, if we have anyfeeling or sense ofhumanity, must be ashamed of the poorresponse right across Europe to the refugeecr is is . Indeed that shame must be fe l tacross the world. Action is needed not justto provide shelter and hope to thosew h o a r e f o r c e d t o f l e e t h e i rcountry. The disregard for life, heritage and culture calls foraction by the great nations ofinfluence to intervene to stopthese wars. The UN has issued a state-ment recognising that this isnot just a migrant crisis butthat it is also a refugee crisis. They go on to say that Europec a n n o t g o o n r e s p o n d i n g t o t h eproblem in a piecemeal or incrementalfashion. They rightly call for courageousmeasures to stabilise the situation and thatall EU member states must participate in a

mass relocation programme. They also pointout that the only ones to benefit from adisjointed response in Europe are the smug-glers and traffickers who are profiting frompeople’s desperation. All very true, but the EU is at the receivingend of th is problem. With some statestaking a massive hit in trying to cope withthe inf lux of re fuges and migrants . In

Greece’s case that country is in themiddle of economic and political

September has arrivedand that means thatyou have plenty oftime to startrevamping your homefor the new season. Itdoesn’t have to be amassive job (thoughan overhaul is alwaysan option too), andyou’d be amazed athow much you can doby adding a fresh coatof paint, some newaccessories or newautumnal plants forthe garden. And anysupplies you need canbe found right here inthe north county.

Bathroom

The same tricks canwork wonders as well inthe bathroom as in anyother room of the house,so start off by trying torefresh with little things. So, get your towelsupdated and see if it’dbe about time to getsome new, differentcoloured ones. Findsome matching storageboxes as that’s the onesure way to keep yourbathroom clean.Organise the thick andheavy toiletries behindthe shelves. If there’s alittle window in your

bathroom, try changingto a new type of glass ifyou feel this is needed,or even just place someornaments close to thewindow ledge.

Living Room

The colder season defi-nitely brings peopletogether, so make sureyour living room is verywelcoming to family andfriends. Get rid of thethick and heavy cush-ions and replace themwith some smaller, lighter ones. Place largeplants on the corners ofthe room and by the

window and get somesmaller ones to fill theplace elsewhere.Otherwise, keep thedecoration spacious andlight, even minimalistic,as well as all the fabricand colour choices. Thatincludes the curtains, blinds and such but alsoin furniture. If you haveno need to buy a totallynew sofa, you canalways get a new coverfor it to make it lookbrand new. You can alsoupdate the wall picturesand other picturesaround the winter to suitthe new season of theyear.

Bedroom

Scrutinise the room forobjects that you feelneed to be changed orupdated for the newseason. Get rid of allkinds of clutter that youknow won’t see the lightof day for ages, espe-cially as you’ll be fillingthe house withHalloween andChristmas stuff soonenough! Now is also agood time to changeyour cushion covers forsomething slightlywarmer so these oh-so-cosy ones can get put togood use.

Just AnotherElection Promise?Continued from page 1submissions provided. The three GovernmentTDs in the area have gonevery silent on Metro andlight rail. Are they going to

accept an enhanced busservice to the city, giventhat the southside isserved by a DART and twoLuas systems?,” heasked.O’Brien continued, “Thelonger the Minister leavesthis, the more people willsee it as a pre-electionploy. My colleague, CllrDarragh Butler and I havebeen calling for this lightrail solution for manyyears now. So it’s acommitment for us to seeit delivered as soon aspossible,” he concluded.Cllr Darragh Butler (FF)said, “We have beenconcerned for a long timethat we were going to belumbered with a bendybus service, while thesouthside gets two newLuas lines. Getting rid ofthe pinch point inDrumcondra is verywelcome, but it hasbecome obvious that abendy bus will not servethe needs of the people ofSwords. It is even ques-tionable that the light railsystem is sufficient andthat the heavier Metrosystem may be theanswer. Whatever thesystem, it will beannounced by a lameduck government, withonly a few months torun.”He continued, “Five yearsago, we were promisedMetro North, left, rightand centre. The minutethe government tookpower, they postponed it,so that they could re-announce it as anotherelection promise and tryto fool us again in 2015.I’m hopeful of positivenews in the next fewweeks, but I’m aware thatthis is an outgoinggovernment and I wantMetro North delivered –not election promises,” he

said. Another local coun-cillor, Justin Sinnott (NP)said, “The road frombeyond Fagan’s pub pastthe Cat and Cage, through to Santryrequired widening, regardless of the bendybuses or any transportstrategy for the NorthCounty. It is a major arterywith a large third levelcollege. At peak times itwas chock a block withcommuters stuck intraffic.”“I would be appalled if amuch needed project likethis is being used as atrojan horse for pushingthe bendy bus option, over a more sustainabletransport solution likeMetro North or a Luasstyle system,” he said.Should Minister Donohoedecide that the bendy busbecomes the preferredtransport option for thearea, it would fly in theface of a plea from hisFine Gael party colleagueand MEP, Brian Hayes. Itwould appear that Hayessees the bigger picturefrom Brussels, when hehighlighted the opportu-nities for Ireland fromEuropean CommissionPresident, Jean-ClaudeJuncker’s €315 billioninvestment plan forEurope. Hayes said he willseek a meeting with theEuropean InvestmentBank (EIB) to promoteIreland’s projects.Hayes said, “I believe thefocus should be on bigticket items, which couldtransform the economy. The Government shouldplace emphasis onprojects, such as MetroNorth and the delivery ofa significant number ofsocial housing units. Timeis of the essence andproject approval willdevelop rapidly,” he said.

“The financing mecha-nism which underpins theJuncker plan (EuropeanFund for StrategicInvestments (EFSI)) hasalready been agreed inJune between theEuropean Parliament andthe European Council. Iam informed that the fundwill become operationalin September,” concludedHayes.Perhaps MinisterDonohoe would be betterserved by having a longdiscussion with his partycolleague, with a distinctpossibility of Metro Northbeing delivered at last.
