“Prayer of the Voyageur” Maggie Jones

Each summer after college, I worked at Camp Hiawatha and Camp Vermilion through Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry. These camps paired with a Canoe Country program, where guides would take groups of campers and adult leaders up to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for weekend or week-long trips, much like the Camp Wapo/Wilderness Canoe Base pairing in our upcoming summer trip. I was fortunate to attend a few of these trips, as a camper, a staff member, and an adult leader. At the beginning of each trip, one of my favorite campfire worship services would take place. Each canoe group would gather at the campfire ring right next to the lake, where we would sing songs, talk about the beauty of creation, and end by praying the same prayer all together; the Prayer of the Voyageur.

The prayer goes like this:

Help me, Lord, to leave my hurried life behind. Help me know the quiet life within Thy templed lakes and trees to find.

Give me eyes to see each task upon the trail.Give me faith to know Thy eyes will never fail.

Grant me patience when the portage paths seem long.Grant me grace to share with friends in word and song.

Plant clean wings upon my feet which now with laden shoes are shod.

Silence me, O Christ, I would be still and know that Thou are God.

When asked to write about a spiritual practice of mine, my mind kept coming back to this prayer. This is a time of new be-ginnings for me, a new job, new apartment, new faces, and new connections. In the midst of all of this newness, it seems appro-priate that it is the season of Lent. Lent teaches us to refocus and to reflect on our relationships with Christ. The last line of the prayer, reflected in Psalm 46:10, is one that I have been focusing on: Silence me, O Christ, I would be still and know that Thou are God.

I am a classic over-booker. I love making plans and staying active, so often that many times I forget to be still, silent, and to appreciate quiet moments, the moments that aren’t filled with ‘to-do’ lists or getting ready for the ‘next thing.’ The moments in which my heart craves reflection. Looking back on the Prayer of the Voyageur and trying to think of what it means for me to be still and know, I recently began to end each day in a time of devotion and reflection. I began to journal before going to sleep each night: something that I am grateful for, something that I am praying for, and some way that I saw, felt, or experienced God during the day.

Page 4: Normandale News March 2016

Doing this has already become a favorite spiritual practice of mine and has helped me slow down and leave my hurried life behind, if only for a little while. During this Lenten sea-son, I am reminded of the Prayer of the Voyageur. I am also reminded of the feelings that accompany being on camping and canoe trips with youth; connectedness, authenticity, and a sense of peace.

Maggie Jones serves as Normandale’s Director of Youth & Family Ministry. Learn more about her on page 11.

God provides more than enough resources to carry out the mission and ministry to which we are called. As disciples, our calling is share our gifts with gratitude, in proportion to what we have been given. When we do so, we rediscover the joy of giving and our faith is strengthened, individually and collectively.

This past year, my focus at NLC has been on our All Together in One Place Comprehensive Campaign, as well as our annual shared ministry support. In addition, my responsibilities as part-time interim Business Administrator included serving as liaison between staff and OPUS for Phase 1 Construction and oversight of finances and property. Now with the completion of Phase 1, and Wendy Reynolds ably filling the position as Business Administrator, my focus in the coming months will be on financial resource development: short-term (our 2016 stretch budget for our shared ministry), ATOP campaign (funding for Phase 2 in order to complete the chapel and fully fund our outreach ministries), and legacy giving (NLC Foundation and other estate planning).

Together, we will reflect on how we can be faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us, and how our shared mission at NLC is constantly making a difference in the lives of people we know, and with those we may never meet in person. Together, we will learn from one another, as we consider that we may have varied reasons and motivations for giving, as well as different preferences in how our gifts are made. Together, we will again celebrate the abundance of God’s grace and the joy that comes in offering the very gifts we have been given!

With gratitude,Pastor Steve Olson

Normandale Center for Healing & Wholeness

We’d like to get to know you! If you’d like to learn more about the work of the Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness (NCHW), we welcome you to drop in anytime to chat with staff or grab an informational brochure. Our office hours are between 9:00 am-4:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, or you can call the Center directly at 952.977.9373.

Caregiver Support GroupsFred Arndt has been attending the Saturday Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group, offered by Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness, for over a year now. Fred attends the Caregiver support group that meets the second Saturday of the month (see page 7 for more information). The group is primarily focused on providing support for those who are caregiving for those with dementia. There is also another group that meets the second Tuesday of the month.

Fred and his wife Sue have been members of Normandale Lutheran Church since 1992. In fact, Fred served on the Board of Directors of the Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness for over 6 years. That is how he learned about the many caregiver services provided by the Center, and these support groups, which are offered in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association of Minnesota/North Dakota.

The group meets monthly and provides members with an opportunity to talk, meet other caregivers, and develop mutual support systems, in order to help support the health and wellness of those providing caregiving to others.

Fred believes the group has provided support for him by providing the opportunity to hear from other people who are caregiving for others in their lives. According to Fred, “We talk through our experiences, and share ideas on how we each individually manage caregiving.” He adds, “It definitely provides an individual caregiver with ideas on how to handle the challenges that come along with it, and it provides a totally different view in acting as a caregiver, by helping us better under-stand what the individual you are caring for (the care receiver) is going through.”

Matter of Balance: Space still available in Edina and Bloomington!Concerned about falling? This 8-week program has been shown to help improve quality of life and increase independence! Participants learn to incorporate exercises that increase strength and balance, recognize fall hazards in the home, and be asser-tive about falls prevention. There are two workshops planned for the spring - contact the Center to register!

When: Wednesdays, March 9-April 27, 9:00-11:00 am When: Thursdays, April 21-June 9, 1:00-3:00 pmWhere: Creekside Community Center Where: Edina Senior Center 9801 Penn Ave S, Bloomington 5280 Grandview Square, Edina

Help Support Our Outreach EffortsWe are currently looking for a gently-used laptop. Outreach in the community means occasionally taking our show “on the road”. This frequently requires us to use a laptop for presentations, classes, and workshops (like the one listed above). Our current laptop does not have the current technology for us to be able to accomplish this. If you have a laptop that is less than 3 years old that you

wish to donate to the Center, please contact us at 952.977.9373. Thank you for supporting our mission!

Field Trip to the Theatre!Normandale Preschool students went on a field trip to see the World Premiere of Bear Snores On by Stages Theatre Company in the beautiful Hopkins Center for the Arts.

They were able to ride a school bus to the theater, which was another field trip of its own for children riding the bus for the first time. During the play, we met many animals as they ventured into Bear’s cave to warm up. Even after the tea had been brewed and the corn popped, Bear just snored on!

Teachers prepared the students to attend the show using a study guide provided by Stages Theatre. They talked about the play with students on the bus as we traveled home and later in the classroom.

What a wonderful learning experience for everyone involved in this fun event!

Life at NLCMeet Maggie Jones, Director of Youth & Family Ministry: Hello! I’m Maggie Jones, and I am SO excited to join you as the Director of Youth and Family Ministry. I have been warmly welcomed into this community by many of you so far, and it is a blessing and honor for me to walk with Normandale’s youth.

I grew up in Roseville, Minnesota and graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College (go Gusties!) with a degree in Sociology/An-thropology and Religion. I grew up attending St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, but began becoming involved with Roseville Lutheran Church in high school. After graduation, I spent a year serving with Americorps through the organization College Possible. My passion for youth ministry grew from my experiences working through Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry Summer Camps for four summers and serving as an adult volunteer leader and chaperone with the Roseville Lutheran’s Senior High Youth Group. I love music (listening and creating) and enjoy hiking, photography, and exploring new places (especially in-volving food) in the Twin Cities. I also love traveling and lived in Ireland for a semester in college, and just spent three months during the fall backpacking through 13 countries in the UK and Europe.

I have many ideas for Normandale’s youth programs (both Confirmation and High School Hangout), and my main goal is for each program to serve as a loving and supportive community for the youth, a way to connect to the congregation and to the wider community in fellowship and service, and as a place where youth can grow together and live out faith in an active way.

Meet Jenny Bock, Director of Connections: Greetings! My name is Jenny Emery Bock. My husband, Tom, and I have been members at Normandale for almost 20 years. We live in Eden Prairie and have three children: Callan (freshman at St. Olaf ), Anna (sophomore at EPHS), and Lucy (6th grade). I have a BA in English Literature from St. Olaf College and an MA in Library and Information Science from St. Catherine’s University.

Over the last 19 years, as a stay-at-home mom, I have been blessed with many volunteer roles at NLC. Some include preschool board and director search committee, stewardship committee, Vision 40 task force, call committee and church council. I also volunteer with the Eden Prairie School District and St. Olaf College. I have loved all of these experiences and the wonderful people I have worked with! Now, I am excited for my new adventure as the Director of Connections and the opportunity to focus on nurturing community relationships and engagement at Normandale.

Meet Wendy Reynolds, Business Administrator: Hi! My name is Wendy Reynolds. I am married to Roy, and we have two boys, Robby and Joey, who are currently in college. I enjoy family time, playing golf, traveling in the motorhome to the race track to watch Roy race, and pool time. We have been members of Normandale for about 20 years. I graduated from Luther College with a BA in Business Management. Before and after graduation, I worked in the car business for 20+ years. For 15 years, I was the controller overseeing multiple stores and en-tities. In 2007, I was a volunteer with Normandale House doing the monthly bookkeeping. I served on the board as Treasurer for 7 years, and was also on the Finance Committee for 6 years. After a year off, I came back in December 2014 to Normandale House and worked with Donna on audit preparation.

I am thrilled to be taking on new responsibilities as Normandale’s Business Administrator along with oversight on the facility, as I continue working with Normandale House.

exceeded $4.3 million.

90% We’re 90% in gifts and pledges to fully fund all that was envisioned in our comprehensive campaign!

Thank you for your gifts and commitments that have brought us to where we are today... It’s hardto believe that only one year ago, we voted to move forward on this venture. And, since thattime, gifts and five year pledges have

Funding Our Outreach Ministries.Due to generous contributions to ATOP and to our shared Operating Fund in 2016,

Your Gifts Are Already Being Put To Use. Phase One of construction is complete (with a few odds and ends to tie up) and came in under budget. We have a beautifully enhanced tool for hospitality, accessibility, connections, and ser-vice. And, we have been able to continue to fund needed deferred maintenance on our facilities and grounds as well.

How Can We Fully Realize Our Goals and Dreams at NLC Through ATOP?

Additional Hopes, Dreams, and Investments at NLC

With a total of $500,000 in new or increased pledges over the next four years (that’s $125,000 per year from 2016-2019), combined with our $2 million mortgage, we will fully fund all ini-tiatives outlined in the All Together in One Place Comprehensive Campaign plans, including the construction of a multi-purpose chapel. The start of chapel construction will be based on the timing of additional gifts and pledges received.

With an additional $200,000, above and beyond our original anticipated goal of $4.8 million, we will provide A/V for the multi-purpose chapel and meeting rooms, roof replacement on the sections that are needed and have not yet been replaced during Phase One construction, and addi-tional furnishings for our renovated spaces.

A Chapel For AllPeople have gathered in sacred spaces, both large and small, throughout human history. From ancient burial grounds to majestic cathedrals, human beings mark spaces for the purpose of giving some material definition to the presence of God. Though we know God exists everywhere, we set aside spaces as reminders of that truth.

Imagine even more light streaming into our beautifully transformed Fireside Room! New skylight, glass wall infill near coffee bar, and the existing closets are removed, allowing light to stream through. A glass railing with a thin wood cap will create a new bridge walkway into the chapel.

Inside the chapel, beautiful walnut wood veneer, limestone glacier buff colored honed and rock face stone. Floors will be acrylic-infused walnut wood veneer. Art glass to allow light to stream in… and out.

This multi-purpose chapel will provide a space for reflection and prayer, a small support group gathered in a circle, joyous music, a small wedding or funeral, and 100+ energetic children sitting on the floor.

Below the chapel, meeting and studio rooms will provide welcoming spaces for conversation or movement. The renovat-ed half-gym will be used for large motor activities.
