Keren KroulNormandale Art GallerySeptember 17 - October 15Interested in the process by which memories become places, Keren Kroul works with watercolor on paper to create large-scale structures of multi-layered colorful marks. These crystalline formations and lyrical land-scapes are inspired by fragmented memories, thought patterns, and living cells.

Kroul was born in Israel, grew up in Mexico and Costa Rica, and now lives in Minneapolis, MN. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Art Museum of the University of Memphis (TN), the Revolving Museum (MA), the Phipps Center for the Arts (WI), and TEOR/eTica (Costa Rica). Kroul was a semi-finalist for the 2010 Jerome Foundation Fellow-ship, and a semi-finalist for the 2012 and 2013 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Visual Artists.

This summer, her work is featured in the 2014 Biennial of the Minnesota Museum of American Art and in the 2014 Biennial Exhibition of the Minnetonka Center for the Arts.

During the drawing session, the model will move from short warm-up poses to extended poses. Sessions may include props and costumes. You may choose to concentrate on full figure drawings or portrai-ture. Skills developed from working exclusively from the figure will include improved anatomical understanding, skills in foreshortening, realistically rendering the human form and enhanced overall expressive concerns. Karen GustafsonRetinal Study Photo Painting

During the 2013-2014 academic year, Professor Karen Gustafson was on sabbatical to conduct research, develop a course, and complete artwork for exhibition. Here are a few highlights from her sabbatical.

In the fall semester she traveled to Oxford, England to complete ‘Art & Anatomy’ a short course at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford University. She additionally spent time studying drawings and paintings in print rooms, galleries, and museums including studying Michelangelo and Raphael drawings up close in the Western Print Room at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The research of artists and artwork in England and upon return has pro-vided additional course materials for her painting and drawings classes.

The Art Department will be offering a new course, ‘Color: Theory and Practice,’ a class Karen developed while on sabbatical. She completed over fifty paint and collage studies prior to writing the course curriculum. Karen exhibited work in exhibitions, including ‘NOISE and Whispers’ at GV Art in London, ‘About Space/Contemporary Abstraction’ at Gallery 101, University of Wisconsin, River Falls, and will be featured in Normandale’s Fine Arts Gallery in Novem-ber showing her current drawing series, ‘Raw to Processed.’

Over 40 Drawing 1 students from two sections attended a tour of this important exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts Thursday evening, September 11th. Students in Carol Joslin’s drawing classes fleshed out their “History of Draw-ing” experience by seeing original works of many of the artists they had viewed earlier in the day in class, and then spending time in the drawing room that is a component of the exhibit. There, they did their own studies with materials provided by the MIA.

A description of the exhibition, which closes the 21st of September, follows:“This exhibition celebrates the MIA’s splendid collection of drawings, watercolors, and pastels. Never before has the museum exhibited such a rich selection of important drawings. Since the MIA opened its doors in 1915, drawings have been a vital element of its holdings, and today there are more than twenty-six hundred sheets. However, because they are fragile and can be damaged by light, they are rarely displayed. Here you will see the cream of the collection. These works illuminate the fundamental and multifaceted role of drawing through the ages. Artists draw as a means of study, observation, and problem solving, as an outpouring of their imaginations and emotions, and as a method of real-izing a finished work of art. The works featured here—ranging from the size of a playing card to the dimensions of a ga-rage door—span six centuries (15th to 21st), come from two continents (Europe and North America), and are executed in a variety of media (chalk, charcoal, graphite, pen and ink, pastel, gouache, watercolor) on paper and parchment. The exhibition is organized around six themes: (1) the artist as observer, (2) a sense of place, (3) storytelling, (4) from imaginative spark to finished design, (5) imitation/emulation/appropriation, (6) abstraction: transcending experience. This arrangement of a multitude of diverse works is designed to reveal interesting and unexpected connections across time and cultures.”
