Well, we have hit another record here in NorthEast Ohio; this June is the 5th wettest June onrecord.

About 4.4 inches above normal, as you know itmakes for trying times to maintain a golf courseand for many of us tying to make revenue on top of

    everything else.

It sounds like Mark Connors impromptu gettogether on June 21 at the Winking Lizard in Fairlawn went well with severaSuperintendents and industry representatives in attendance. This is a regiogathering that the NOGCSA Board has been trying to get members out andmeet their peers and have some conversation along with a relaxingatmosphere. Stay tune for more of these gatherings, perhaps we will have oin your area.

On June 25 the monthly meeting was held at the beautiful Mohican Hills GoClub hosted by Kim Derr. A great day was had by everyone, thanks to Kim

and the staff at Mohican Hills. Coming in July 27, 2013 Night at the AkronAeros along with fireworks after the game, tickets are only $7.00 each, a gnight to take the entire family out for some fun. Dont forget the family picnicon August 3 & 4, at Clays park. Come and spend the night camping or justcome for the day, fun for all.

Keep in touch for more exciting events from your NOGCSA. Enjoy your July4th.

DIALED INBy Bob Vavrek, senior agronomist, North-Central Region

    June 24, 2013

I was in a rut. It seemed like every course I visited

was having issues with excessive organic matteraccumulation in the upper soil profile of 5- to 8-

year-old greens. Some were new, some were

completely rebuilt, some were fumigated then

regrassed, but all were seeded to an improved,

ultra-dense cultivar of bentgrass. Spongy, pitted ball

marks, black layer, moss, algaeyou name it, they

had it. The problem was easy to diagnose and the

cause was always some combination of too much

water, too much nitrogen, not enough cultivation

    and not enough topdressing.

You begin to wonder if thatch problems on new

greens are inevitable until you finally visit a course

where the superintendent gets it. They have the

    topdressing, cultivation, fertility and irrigation

practices dialed in from day one. The greens provide

golfers a superior putting surface with a minimal

buildup of organic matter. In fact, you cant even

find the grow-in layer that occurs during

establishment. Those visits always energize me and

I can make unpopular recommendations ofaggressive cultivation and topdressing to other

    courses with more confidence.

Need proof? Check out the soil profile of this over

5-year-old bentgrass greengreat surface and no

thatch. With the office being located in Milwaukee,

there was only one last statement to make at the

conclusion of this enjoyable visit; Its Miller time,

    and Im buying!

Samples from blighted turf with large or irregularareas of brown grass have been arriving in theclinic. Many of these are the result ofAscochytaleaf blight caused byAscochyta spp. The classicsymptoms of this disorder are individual leavesdying back from the tip and entire leaves becomebleached, a tan or brown color. At times there maybe tan/brown bands on the leaves and the declineof the turfgrass may occur quickly. Small blackflecks may be seen on the dead leaves with a handlens, these are the fruiting bodies of the fungus.Secondary saprophytic fungus may develop on thedead tissue and be confused with the pathogen.

This can occur on all grasses but Kentuckybluegrass seem to be especially prone.

This disease was triggered by the extremes in

temperatures experienced in May. Much of thestate experienced a 10 -14 day period of coolconditions in mid to late May followed by soaring

hot temperatures on the Memorial weekend.Turfgrass that was under moisture stress, mowed, used for sports etc. was often damaged and quicklyshowed browning. Even though the turfgrass maylook severely damaged the main injury is confinedto the leaf blades. The crowns of the plant, thegrowth point for turfgrass, are usually intact andhealthy. Check the affected areas by brushing thebrown grass with your hand. This will break off thedead material. Then look at the base of the plantsand often there will be new green shootsdeveloping.

Recovery should occur with milder weatherconditions. It is recommended to follow propermowing, irrigation and fertilization procedures toencourage new leaf growth. Fungicide applicationsare seldom needed. Growth of normal leaves to fillin damaged areas may take several weeks, depending on weather conditions. Remember thatcool season grasses recover and grow best undercool, moist, sunny and moderate conditions.

Effective immediately; it is no longer necessary

for Class C members and Associate categories to

be members of GCSAA in order to be a member

or apply for membership to NOGCSA. This

change to the bylaws was done to encourage

membership of individuals in these categories in

our local association. It was determined by the

board, that for these Classes, the requirement of

dual membership was too large a financial

burden. It is the hope of the Board that this

    Education Spotlight

An exciting and informative lineup of 13 new

seminars has been approved by GCSAA's ConferenceEducation Committee for the 2014 Education

Conference in Orlando. In this space, we'll feature a

sneak peak at these new seminars to get a jump start

on planning your 2014 Conference Education

    experience.

    As July 1st

approaches, pleasegive a friendly reminder to all

    of your superintendents that

per the new health care reform

act, your facility will now start

    counting employees and part

    time hours that will count

    toward next years health care

reform act. The new law states

that the last 6 months of 2013 will be used to

determine thresholds for 2014. These thresholds will

determine whether your club is a large business orsmall business. There are many resources being

made available to provide information about the

new health care law, if your members have

questions please have them contact myself or Chava

McKeel at GCSAA Headquarters and we can point

them in the right direction. Some of the Great Lakes

region chapters such as Northern Ohio and

Northwest Ohio have had educational sessions on

health care reform for their members. There is a lot

going on right now in the world of governmentrelations and GCSAA is here to help its members

work through them. I hope everyone has a great

summer and please let me know if I can help you

    with anything.
