It is where information to run the programmes that are being used currently my the proccessor, is held. It is a tempory type of memory which means it clears when you lose power or shut down the computer.This is known as volatile memory

This is why when you “accidently” turned my computer off yesterday, my work was lost forever!

I hadn’t saved my work so it was held in RAM, deleting it when you flipped the switch!

Examples of How it is Used

In hospitals, if a computer is running multiple applications at the same time for the doctor to use, such as a patient database, a video of an operation and other software, the computer would need lots of RAM to use to run all these programmes quickly and efficiently.

WHAT IS ROM?• ROM stands for Read only Memory.

• ROM is computer memory on which data has been pre-recorded. Once data has been written onto a ROM chip, it cannot be removed and can only be read.

• Unlike main memory (RAM), ROM retains its contents even when the computer is turned off. ROM is referred to as being non-volatile, whereas RAM is volatile.

• Volatile (vol•a•tile)- not retaining data when electrical power is turned off/ all data is kept when powered off.

• Non- Volatile- All information is stored and is unchanged even powered off.

• The operating system uses ROM so that the start up of a computer is the same each time it is turned on. This cannot be changed.

• Most personal computers contain a small amount of ROM that stores critical programs such as the program that boots the computer. In addition, ROMs are used extensively in calculators and peripheral devices such as laser printers, whose fonts are often stored in ROMs.

• Dishwashers

• Microwaves

• Televisions- Used in hospitals as entertainment for patients.

• Vending Machines- This is used in hospitals so people in hospitals can have a pick me up.

• Ticket Machines- This is used in hospital car parks.

• Electronic hospital beds- Used to alter position of bed for comfort of patient.

• Back up generators- Used in hospitals to sense whether power has been cut.

• Heart monitors

• MRI scans

• Electronic Scales used to measure people’s weight in hospitals.

• Wristwatch

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES• An advantage of ROM is once it is "written" to, it will be there forever. Roms are often

used in fixed situations like the chip that runs a dishwasher, an inexpensive wristwatch, etc. Also, it does not require constant source of electricity.

• A disadvantage of ROM is that it has limited use, for example if you wanted more functions on your washing machine, you’d have to buy a new washing machine because a ROM is unchangeable.

Data can be words, numbers, dates, images, sounds or anything without context.

BYTES & DATA.Bit each individual 1 or 0 is called a bit – short for binary digit.

Byte 8 bits is called a byte.

Kilobyte 1 kilobyte (1KB or simply 1K) is about a thousand bytes.

Megabyte 1 megabyte (1MB) is about a million bytes.

Gigabyte 1 gigabyte (1GB) is about a thousand million bytes. To be exact, 1 GB = 230 = 1073 741 824 Bytes. Terabyte 1 terabyte (1TB) is about 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.

Binary is a form of data which uses 0s and 1s to represent numbers and letters.

For example, a lower case a written as 01100001 in binary.

Computers use binary as it is more direct and requires minimal translation.

Input devices can collect data automatically, for example a barcode reader at a till.

The data collected will be read into a database for processing.
