Ugu Health District and its facilities attended MASEA Awards which was planned by the Office of the MEC, Dr SM Dhlomo on 02 June 2017 at the ICC Durban.
The MASEA recognizes districts and facilities for per-formance excellence in the delivery of healthcare ser-vices for individuals and teams in various categories.
Ugu health facilities and some individuals were amongst those who were congratulated by the MEC and Head of Health as they scooped their awards in this special event.
Port Shepstone Hospital: 3rd position in the Out-standing achievement for innovation category for their safe disposal of insulin needles and sy-ringes.
St Andrews Hospital receiving an award during MASEA Awards at ICC Durban
District Director Mrs NC Mkhize with other Managers during MASEA Awards at ICC Durban
Gamalakhe CHC: 1st position—Best perfor-mance in Ideal Clinic Realization and Mainte-nance.

Murchison Hospital: Special recognition for ser-vice excellence in maintaining consistently low maternal mortality rate over the last three years.
Murchison Hospital: Certificate of commenda-tion for Ms. J Balmith, Dietician in the category of Allied Health Professional of the Year.

On 24th March 2017 Ugu Health District commemo-rated TB day at Malangeni sport ground, Umdoni Ward 9. All facilities at Ugu District including clinics attended the event with more then 500 people from the community attending. The event, organized by TB Manager at the District Mr. Shane Naidoo, and the team was a success.
Cllr P Thabethe for Umdoni Municipality Ward 9 Malangeni area appreciated the community of Umdoni and health workers for working together. “This area was the most affected area at the District by TB. Peo-ple were not educated and the area was having many defaulters. Some of them were not traceable. With the help of health workers and the tracer teams the situa-tion have improved a lot.” said Cllr Thabethe. He en-couraged the community to support each and stand together to fight TB.
Giving the testimony Ms Rejoice Zuke and Mr Steven Nxumalo who were infected by TB thanked the De-partment of Health as they were able to take their

treatment successfully with the help of Umzinto clinic and CCGs who are working on the area. Their fami-lies were happy because they were able to work for their children.
Giving her keynote address, Mrs T Gumede from GJ Crookes Hospital, told the community that TB is cura-ble. She encouraged people to finish their treatment and visit their clinic when they have TB before they proceed to Drug-Resistance TB.
“ Drug-resistance TB is common in people who do not take their medicines regularly, who do not finish their TB treatment as told by nurses or doctors, develop active TB disease again after having taken TB medi-cine in the past and those who have spent time with someone who has Drug-resistance TB.” said Mrs Gumede.

OFFICE MANAGER FOR UGU DISTRICT OFFICE
Ugu Health District has been recently joined by Mrs. Vamisile Sakyiamah as an Office Manager after Mr. N. C. Nguza has retired.
Mrs. Sakyiamah started working at Bethesda Hospital as an Admin. Clerk. Few years later she was appoint-ed at Ngwelezane Hospital as Senior Admin Clerk , after that she went to Umzimkulu Psychiatric Hospital as an Administrator, which was in Eastern Cape.
In 2007, Umzimkulu was incorporated in KwaZulu-Natal. “In 2007, I was appointed as the first Corporate Services Manager at Harry Gwala which was known as Sisonke Health District. In 2009 I was then ap-pointed as a Chief Executive Officer for St. Apollinaris Hospital until 31 March 2017.”

NEW VEHICLES ISSUED BY PROVINCIAL HEAD OFFICE TO UGU DISRICT EMS

again received three new ambulances with equip-ment. One has been deployed to EMS Umzinto Sub-District, one to EMS Port Shepstone Sub-District and the other to EMS Harding Sub-District. All three are currently operational.
The 3 new ambulances compliment the existing fleet in the provision of an emergency medical service to the community of Ugu District as well as the provision of inter-health facility transfers within and outside the district for patients who need to be transported to a higher level of care.
On the 24th March 2017, Ugu District EMS received one new Patient Transport Services (PTS) bus. This vehicle is a first of its kind to be received by Ugu EMS. This PTS vehicle is capable of transporting 2 stretcher patients, 4 seated patients and 1 patient attendant. This will assist in transporting of non-emergency stretcher patients. The vehicle became operational by end of March and is used on a daily basis between Monday to Friday transporting pa-tients to Durban. The vehicle is based centrally in Port Shepstone. DISTRICT OFFICE COMMUNICATION INTERN Ugu Health District Communications Department welcomes. Miss Thubelihle Mqadi who is doing her internship for a period of a year. Thubelihle who is residing at uMthwalume area in Umzumbe Municipal-ity, will be with the District until 31 March 2018. she resumed her duties as an intern on 1 April 2017.
She did her in-service training for Public Relations Management in Murchison Hospital before she grad-uated at University Of Zululand.
“I am so excited to join Ugu team, I will be working with the District Office and also the Public Relations Officers for all the institutions under Ugu District. Thank you very much for the warm welcome from my mentor T Ngcobo and team. I hope I will enjoy my journey at the District.” said Miss Mqadi

TRANSFORMATION LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR THE DEPARTMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN RICHARDS BAY
…….introducing a new ambulance to the management
The Kwa-Zulu Natal Department of Health commissioned Spark Health to train the District Health Manage-ment Teams (DHMTs) and Sub District Health Management Teams in a team culture change and transforma-tional leadership programme. This training took place from 13-17 March 2017 in Richards Bay. It was focusing on strengthening District Health Systems and improve health outcomes by leveraging resources and igniting the power of health managers to drive their own system change. The intention was to enhance the capacity of the District and Sub District Team to identify, analyze, take ownership and resolve barriers to quality health care to reinforce health systems particularly in the context of MNCWH, 90 90 90 strategy, Ideal Clinics, NCD and sustainable community health programmes.
The Department of Health and the Department of Sports and Recreation organized a very success-ful event on the 20th May 2017. May is celebrated as move for your health month. These two Depart-ments usually plan together with the Municipalities for this event. The community and the youth were running 10km which is from Pennington to Emal-angeni Area and 5km. The main event was at Em-alangeni Sport ground where sponsors celebrated with the runners. Position number 1 to 10 will then be running Provincially with different Districts.
