IL PROFESSIONISTA DELLA MOUNTAINBIKE UWE HOCHENWARTER DICE DELLA REGIONE ... The Nassfeld-Pressegger See – Lesachtal – Weissensee bike region, my home, where I grew up, is the ideal place for me to build up my strength for my mountain bike races. I do it both before the season starts and between races. It doesn’t matter if it’s a long tour through the flats of the Gailtal valley or the many alpine pastures and summits in the region. I can recommend it for all bikers. The Karnische Dolomitenstraße (Carnic Dolomite Road, KDS for short) is 300 km long, with over 8,300 m in altitude difference, and is the most popular way to thread through the Carnic Alps. The eastern end lies at the border crossing point of Arnoldstein. The western end is in Innichen in South Tyrol. The KDS is a beautiful, romantic, almost always quiet, scenic tourist route with numerous viewpoints. Thanks to the two North-South connections, over the Nassfeld pass and the Plöcken pass, it can also be split naturally into more than one stage (Tour SR6). The people who live along the KDS have always been proud of their folklore and tradi- tions. The very diverse food cultures along the way offer cyclists Carinthian, Tyrolean and Italian culinary specialities. The challenge for racing cyclists and touring cyclists is to choose the best daily sections to suit them. Thanks to the boost of the electric motor to your own pedal-power, more and more people are able to enjoy cycling. Ascents, which used to seem impossible, are now easy to overcome with an eBike. Now even less athletic cyclists can reach their destination comfortably and in an environ- mentally-friendly way. If you and your partner are used to going at different speeds, then an eBike is the perfect solution for a joint cycling tour. Even longer tours are no problem with an electric motor! So that your eBike doesn’t run out of “juice”, look for the green spots with plug symbol in the map of the region or online, which indicate where you can recharge your bike’s battery. Feast your eyes on the views over the Carnic and Gailtal Alps from up high, dip your toes in the cool lakes or enjoy the thrill of whizzing downhill: the mountain and lake districts of the Nassfeld-Pressegger See, Lesachtal and Weissensee holiday regions are inspiring – for leisure cyclists just as much as free-riders and mountain bikers. There are 950 kilometres of first-class mountain bike routes and cycling paths in the entire region. Fairly flat bike routes lead along the Gail River or around the crystal clear lakes. For bikers still with power in their legs, a trip to one of the many alpine dairy farms is certainly recommended. At the top, your efforts will be rewarded with mild temperatures and hearty regional delicacies. The cross-border tours to Italy are an absolute highlight. Even a three-country tour to Slovenia is possible. A comprehensive network of hire and battery exchange stations makes eBiking a real pleasure. Biking across diverse terrain, with tough uphill sections and challenging downhills. All those who would rather reach the Naggler Alm without quite so much effort can use an eBike or the Weissensee chairlift with Mountainbike transport seat, which will take you and your bike up to the Naggler Alm in just 12 minutes, offering great views of Lake Weissensee on the way up. An absolute highlight for road cyclists is the tour to Lake Weissensee, including a trip across the lake by boat.
