Jim Schneider was a successful insurance underwriter who was looking for more of a purpose in his life. He and his wife, Amy, were happily ensconced in their family life in Sharon, Pennsylvania, but both still felt that something was missing. One night in bed Jim had a vision of starting an eyewear company that would somehow benefit people in third world countries. He excitedly woke his wife to share his news and she promptly told him to go back to sleep.
Although Amy had spent time as an opti-cian, Jim had no experience in this field, so she felt his idea was just a dream. But he felt he was being led by the hand of God and started exploring the idea in-depth. The very next day he booked a trip to a large eyewear show and was at Expo Vision in Las Vegas just a few days later. Of the 5000 brands on exhibit, there was nothing that represented faith, so Jim likes to say that the idea for Eyes of Faith was born in Sin City.
He wanted to start a company that would provide a quality product, and yet still help disadvantaged people in some way. He even-tually took a leap of faith, sold his interest in his insurance agency, and started Eyes of Faith. The literal vision for his company was to provide people with hope-inspired, design-er eyewear and the ability to share the gift of sight. He developed a logo, set up a corporate
structure and philosophy, and found a factory partner in New York City.
In another remarkable coincidence Jim had been looking for a Christian music fes-tival to attend and found the “Night of Joy” at Disney World, when he came up with the idea to launch his brand there. He happened to be playing golf when he got a phone call from an insurance friend in Kansas City who hooked him up with the sponsor coordinators for the event. Everything fell into place and the Beauty and the Beast stage was trans-formed into the Eyes of Faith stage for an amazing two nights.
Eyes of Faith creates fashionable eyewear and sunglasses for family members of all ages. Jim’s wife Amy eventually came on
board and is now Vice President of product development. She works to provide a medi-cal device that still makes a style statement. They want to provide a quality frame that tastefully communicates faith. Current col-lections include the Eyes of Faith® house brand, Not of This World®, and the first line of eyewear from VeggieTales®. Coming this fall is a Women of Faith® design.

When everything you know has been changed by the loss of financial support due to divorce, loss of loved one, or disability, you need someone to guide you through the process of rebuilding your financial future.
Contrary to popular belief, sometimes, life does give you a “do-over.” But the key to a “do-over,” is to do it over the right way. No matter what your stage in life, there are simple steps you need to follow to plan your financial future.
Adrienne Rothstein Grace CFP®, CLTC, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst ( CDFA™), can take the financial pitfalls out of this emotional and challenging time by offering valuable insight and practical solutions her years of practice have developed. Adrienne is your “do over” financial planner. With a few easy steps you can be back in control of your financial future.
Step One: REviEWOrganize and value your assets. Prepare a Statement of Net Worth and
prioritize your goals.
Step Two: PLANEstimate your immediate needs. Develop a budget for current expenses and
project a budget for future needs. This is the stage when you will start to build your picture of tomorrow.
Step three: ANALYzEUnderstand and analyze your liabilities, while also understanding your future
earning potential. Create “compare and contrast” scenarios to understand how one change could affect other things.
Step Four: REbUiLdNow it’s time to exercise your new-found control over your financial
future. It’s all about overseeing asset transfers, setting up budgeting and money management systems. It’s time to review your risk profile and reallocate investments to meet your current needs, and keep you on track with your goals.
With the right guidance, you can take the financial pitfalls out of this emotional and challenging time and take control of your finances.

professionals in over 600 locations throughout the United States. According to Jim, “God uses us to connect people. These frames are a vehicle for us to do his work.”
The best part is that for every Eyes of Faith purchase, they donate a complete pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses to a person in need through Wear & Share™. This program transforms a portion of each eyewear purchase into a donated pair of prescription glasses, readers, or sunglasses that reach people in need. Sight Ministries partners with missionaries and indigenous pastors to conduct multiple eye clinics in
communities where eye care providers and facilities are not readily available.
The latest Eyes of Faith contribution to Sight Ministries brought their total glasses and sunglasses donated to more than 10,000 pairs. They have also helped to contribute human resource support via doctor and optician grants in conjunc-tion with the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists Interna-tional. Jim has made two trips to Kenya with Sight Ministries to participate in the distribution process. Clinics are held at local churches where those in need receive free eye exams. If a vision problem is noted, the patient receives free prescrip-tion glasses on the spot. Many walk away with clear sight and able to read the Bible for the first time in their lives. If there is no vision problem, patients receive a free pair of sunglasses to protect against sun damage. All receive an ample dose of love and a message of hope.
The company also recently launched its “Eyes of Faith Storehouse” e-commerce website where consumers can Wear & Share with John 3:16 eye chart t-shirts. A reciprocal t-shirt is donated to missions for each purchase. Additional t-shirt designs and accessories complementary to the eyewear col-lections are slated for availability at the online store this sum-mer.
The Eyes of Faith vision is to be the leading designer of eyewear for Christ-followers, sought out for its style, quality, Wear & Share™ give-back program, and features that pro-vide an opportunity to proudly display and share faith. Ask your local independent optical dispenser if they carry the Eyes of Faith line.

There are few medical breakthroughs so amazing that they literally change the course of medicine. Just as LASIK surgery revolutionized vision care, and gastric bypass revolutionized weight loss, new technologies are revolutionizing how doctors treat pain and debilitating diseases such as degenerative joint conditions, migraines, arthritis, and neuropathy.
The newest technology called MLS Laser Therapy, originally developed in Italy, is now available in the United States, and Dr. Anthony J. Bianchi, D.C. in Cheektowaga is proud to be on the medical technological forefront by offering this brand new therapy to his patients.
MLS Laser Therapy is used to reduce pain, relieve inflammation, and restore mobility. It uses specific wavelengths of light that have a strong anti-inflammatory effect on tissues that are ex-posed to the laser. Photons of laser energy pen-etrate deeply into tissue and accelerate cellular reproduction and growth. As a result of exposure to the MLS laser, the cells of tendons, ligaments
and muscles repair themselves faster. As inflam-mation is reduced, pain subsides very quickly. Unlike some pharmacological solu- tions, there are no known negative side effects. Laser therapy is cleared by the FDA and proven successful as evidenced by extensive and credible studies con-ducted in our country’s finest institutions includ-ing Harvard University.
Moreover, MLS Laser Therapy is painless and treatments average only 10 minutes. Over 90% of patients experience positive results within the first few treatments, with treatment protocols ranging from 3 to 15 sessions, depending on the nature of the condition.
Another new technology is Whole body vi-bration (Wbv) which was initially used by the Russian aerospace industry and is now being used to reduce arthritic pain, increase muscle strength, flexibility, blood circulation, improve walk bal-ance, and increase bone density!
Finally disc Rehydration Therapy is the primary non-surgical safe and effective treatment
for patients with herniated disc, degenerative joint disease, facet arthritis, disc bulge, and spinal stenosis. This new therapy actually reduces the pressure inside the discs of the spine by drawing the bulging and herniated material back into the disc, relieving the pressure on the nerves of the spine, and eliminating pain. Unlike drugs or injections, this new therapy is natural and its effects are lasting and often permanent.
The best news is that these new therapies are suited for almost everyone. Regardless of the therapies you’ve tried in the past you still have a chance to relieve your chronic pain or other de-bilitating condition and regain a normal healthy lifestyle.
For more information about these therapies call 213-6824 or visit www.buffalopaindoctor.com. Mention this article when you call to qualify for a no-charge consultation with dr. bianchi. ✢

If you always wanted to go to the Holy Land, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tonawanda invites you to join their group going the end of next winter, Feb 21, - March 3, 2014. It should be cool and you might see some rain. People in Bibli-cal times experienced it, you can too. You’ll learn that, unlike what you see in movies, Israel is a land of milk and honey – and much of it is green, especially in the winter months. Almond trees should be blooming and the wild flowers abun-dant - “the lilies of the field
For Immanuel’s new pastor, Rev. Andrew James Abraham, this will be his 2nd trip to the Holy Land. He will accompany the group as chaplain and spiritual guide at appropriate times and places. The tour is scheduled to be led by the award win-ning Israeli tour guide, Liam Barkay.
You’ll be back in time for Ash Wednesday. Imagine how meaningful Lent and Easter will be, have just come back from visiting some real historical sights, and many traditional sights. The itinerary has been laid out by Jeff Keefe, (He writes the History Corner in this paper). Jeff has visited Israel, owned his own travel agency and is a student of Bib-lical History with “continuing education” credits earned at seminars sponsored by the Biblical Archaeology Society
We’ll start out with a night in the Judean wilderness. A place to escape, pray, meditate and if the Spirit is willing, perhaps you experience a new closeness to God. In some Christian traditions the Wilderness is a place or state of with-drawal from the world to face the reality of God, oneself and one’s neighbor, and to overcome the power of evil. We’ll be saying at the Ein Gedi oasis, one of the places David hid from King Saul. Ibex sometimes venture on to the property, which adjoins a desert botanical garden.
Still in the wilderness, we’ll travel along the Dead Sea to a place where the Essenes, a Jewish sect, that rejected the existing Jerusalem priesthood as illegitimate, evil and wrong about a lot of things, lived a communal life awaiting the final battles between the light and dark, good and evil, God and the Satanic. They hid their ancient scrolls in caves and wrote new ones before and during Jesus’ lifetime. Also experienc-ing the wilderness nearby was John the Baptist, only a few miles north of the Dead Sea.
Onto to Jericho, another oasis in the wilderness, fed by at least 7 springs and a walled city with a tower, that pre-dates the rise of cities in Egypt and Mesopotamia by thousands of years.
Then we’ll travel on to the “hill country of Ephraim”, to Shechem, which lies between Mt. Ebal and Mt Gerizim, the mountains of blessings and curses (Deuteronomy 11 and Joshua 24). A lot of things happen in or near Shechem; Abra-ham built an altar to God, his grandson Jacob dug a well and his favorite son, Joseph, may have been buried. Don’t forget, Jesus met a Samaritan woman at the well in Shechem. We’ll pass by Samaria, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Israel on our way to Galilee.
The tour will be in Galilee for four nights at a hotel overlooking the Sea of Galilee. Days will be spent visiting various sights known to Jesus and the disciples. A boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, a visit to Capernaum’s synagogue and a trip to Nazareth Village where you can see and learn about life in a small village in the time of Jesus are all included. We’ll take time to read the “Sermon on the Mount” while on a verdant hillside outside of Capernaum.
The last four days will be in Jerusalem, at a nice boutique hotel, about a 15 minute walk of the Old City’s Jaffa Gate. . We’ll visit where Luke says Jesus life started in Bethlehem. We visit the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane and walk the “way of Sorrows,” i.e. the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. We’ll visit the holy sights of Jews and Muslims, e.g. the Western Wall, the temple mount, and the Dome of the Rock
The tour is priced at $2769 a person twin and $3284 per person single. For more information about this unique opportunity call Jeff Keefe at 693-0795, Way To Go Tours in North Tonawanda or email Immanuel Lutheran in Tonawanda at [email protected].

The Rev. Robert Spilman, CPE SupervisorSamaritan Counseling Center,
North Tonawanda, NY How can pastors and lay ministers lead their congregations most effectively? What can help them to empower church members to be in ministry in the world? How can they relate to their congregations less anxiously and address problems and crises in the church without taking on the stress of others? Congregation-Based Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) helps ministers address these important questions that are at the heart of their calling. It is a unique continuing education program offered by the Samaritan Counseling Center, North Tonawanda, New York. Developed for pastors, lay ministers, and staff in local churches, the CPE program helps them to be the listeners and leaders that God calls them to be. Using reflection on faith with a family systems theory approach to ministry, Congregation-Based Clinical Pastoral Education provides a four to five-month long learning experience in a small group format. It helps ministers grow in their pastoral and leadership skills and deal more effectively with the challenges of ministry. When pastors work with families in crisis and lead their churches in times of stress and challenge, they can be most effective with the support and counsel of other peers in ministry under a trained coach. Congregation-Based CPE offers this dynamic opportunity for personal and pastoral growth. The Samaritan Counseling Center is committed to offer this unique learning approach to the church community in Western and Central New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania.
When CPE Classes Are Offered Three Congregation-Based CPE classes are offered per year:(1) Winter-Spring in the Buffalo, New York area.(2) Winter-Spring in the Rochester, New York area.(3) Summer-Fall in Binghamton, New York (2013) and Western Pennsylvania (2014).
A Personal Witness from a Pastorin the CPE Program
“Congregation-Based CPE is such a valuable program because it begins and ends with the individual student. All that we do—as clergy and lay ministers in a church, chaplains at a hospice, or pastoral care associates in an agency—is colored by our life experiences as parent, child, sibling, student, and staff member. Whenever we are in relationship with other people, we are in a system, and all of our experiences in other systems will affect our behavior in the current system.“Learning how we respond to anxiety, stress, and discord allows us to see how we are contributing to the action in the system. Congregation-Based CPE not only teaches these concepts, the program supervisor and peers walk with you as you learn and live these concepts. Identifying our own tendencies makes us, ultimately, much better clergy people and lay ministers.”
How it Works In a group of five to eight persons, CPE participants meet together with the CPE supervisor one day per week over a four-month period. The curriculum includes (1) case material from church ministry, (2) family of origin work, (3) presentations on systems theory and ministry, (4) reflection time in the group, and (5) individual coaching time with the
CPE supervisor.

History CornerThe oldest record of Shechem is
in the Elba Tablets, about 2300BC. Shechem was a commercial center on a trade route through the hill coun-try, separating the Plain of Sharon from the Jordan River and connecting Beersheba with Megiddo and Hazor. It lies between Mt. Ebal and Mt. Ger-izim. Centuries later “Abram went as far as the sanctuary at Shechem, the Terebinth tree of Moreh” Gen 12:6. There was a Canaanite sanctuary there. It was here that the Lord first told Abram he’d give the land to his descendants. Abram built an altar in Shechem before moving on.
Jacob and his family left Harran, Shechem is the place he chose to set-tle. He pitched his tent, bought some land from Hamor and built an altar. A local prince, named Shechem, was at-tracted to Jacob’s daughter Dinah. He was in love with her, sought to win her affection and lay with her. Shechem asked his father Hamor, to talk to Ja-cob and arrange a marriage. Jacob and his sons agreed to the wedding if the men of the town will get circum-cised. It was agreed and done. While the men of the town were in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simon and Levi killed all the men, took their sister Di-nah from Shechem’s home and stole anything of value. When Jacob told Simon and Levi that they had given
him a bad name, they replied, “Is our sister to be treated as a common whore?” God told Jacob to move to Bethel. Before he left Jacob collected the foreign gods in his family’s pos-session and buried them under a ter-ebinth tree. See Genesis 31
Joshua 8 tells us that Joshua built an altar on Mt. Ebal and with half the people facing Mt. Ebal and half fac-ing Mt. Gerizim, he read the list of blessings and curses to the Israelites (See also Deut. 11 and 17). In Joshua 24, Joshua again assembled all the tribes of Israel to appear before God at Shechem. The people made a cov-enant with God and Joshua set up a stone as a witness to the covenant “…under the terebinth in the sanctuary of the Lord” Joshua 24:26. We are also told that the bones of Jacob’s son Joseph were buried on the land Jacob had purchased.
When Gideon died he had 72 sons. In Judges 9, we are told one of them, Abimelech, killed 70 of his broth-ers, but the youngest one Jotham es-caped. The inhabitants of Shechem made Abimelech king next to “…the propped up terebinth at Shechem (v. 6). Abimelech had been “prince over Israel for three years” when the people of Shechem rebelled against him. When he attacked Shechem the people took refuge in the “temple of
El-Berith” or temple of the God of the Covenant. Abimelech destroyed the Temple and the city around 1100BC.
After King Solomon’s death, about 930BC “all Israel” was at Shechem and asked Rehoboam ,Solomon’s son and heir apparent ,to ease the burden imposed on them by Solomon. Re-hoboam told the people he would not ease the burden he’d make it worse. The people rebelled and made Je-roboam King of Israel. He built up Shechem as his residence and the first capital of his Kingdom but he set up golden calves at Bethel (only about 11 miles from Jerusalem’s temple) and at Dan (Israel’s far north) for people to worship as the gods who rescued them from Egypt. Rehoboam was King only of Judah.
Shechem was destroyed by the As-syrians in their destruction of the Kingdom of Israel. It was rebuilt and became a prominent city around 300BC. The Samaritans, believing they worshiped the Lord where he commanded them to, built a temple on the adjacent Mt Gerizim. After the successful Maccabean revolt against Antichous IV, John Hyrcanus, the prince, king, high priest of the Jews (135-104BC), destroyed the Samari-tan Temple and city in 129BC.
Jesus visited Shechem (Scholars debate wither Shechem and Sychar
are the same place or are separate vil-lages). They are both at the foot of Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal are a short walk from Jacob’s field and well. John 4:5 “So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wea-ried as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Sa-maria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)” Later she tells Jesus, our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews say God and only be worshipped in Jerusalem. The Samaritans in 2013 still worship and sacrifice on Mt. Gerizim above an-cient Shechem.

On a day when the sun was hidden by a storm cloud,
Another generation was chaotically; about to begin.
Though most lives are often plagued by great stress,
That motivates the defiant people to remain unbowed.
What is sonic about earth; is the cosmic vibrating din.
While billions of bipeds; make no realistic progress.
Because many seek comfort from the milling crowd,
Yet the wheel of misfortune will indiscriminately spin.
Just when it’ll stop; is any person’s unqualified guess.
Especially when the ill-informed walk around proud,
While thinking that there’s no such thing as wicked sin,
Then completely reject any blame for the sorry mess.
Where Saints aren’t all alone; due to the sacred shroud,
For anyone who’ll repent and confess will surely win.
