September? Already? Hope you’ve had as much fun Cruis’n as we have and God willing, it ain’t over yet.
The Cruis’n crew kinda feels like Johnny Cash, “We’ve been everywhere, man!” Our first summer
on the streets has been so rewarding. Getting the chance to meet and hang out with so many cool car people has been a blast and there’s still so much we need to see and do.
September offers so many great shows and events. The month, of course is highlighted by Frankenmuth and the Nationals North in Kalamazoo and we’ll be everywhere from Lake Orion to North Gratiot and in between. September isn’t a time to slow down, but to gear up for more Cruis’n fun.
This summer has taken us from Centerline to St. Ignace. We’ve stopped at Cruise nights in Canton, Lapeer, Holly and more. We’ve had coffee at Pasteiner’s and milkshakes at Culver’s. We’ve marveled at the turnout at Baker’s in Milford and got tuned up at Emmeet in Detroit. My only regret is we couldn’t be at everything, every time, but our team of scientists in the Cruis’n cloning lab are working overtime to correct that as we speak.
Such a busy summer has limited my seat time in the Impala, but I’ve gotten a few miles in. It would be no fun running Cruis’n without being able to do some cruising of my own, so I’ve tried to strike a balance when I can.
I still get asked about Oma’s SS. Trust me she still provides plenty of material to write about, but I’ve tried not to be so self-gratuitous. If you’ll indulge me, I’ll share a little story. You so enjoyed my misery during the restoration process, I’m sure you’ll appreciate knowing . . . it continues.
After finally licking a long-standing transmission leak, I was ready to roll. My focus became getting the car ready for my first ever trip to St. Ignace. Thanks to Cruis’n correspondent and car pal, Murray Pfaff I was able to hitch a ride up there with Pilot Transport. The car required some detailing before loading, so I went to work.
As I was pulling the car out of the garage to create some more room to work, I noticed the neglected, under-dash interior bulb wires I failed to fix. I thought, I can’t just leave those dangling, so I decided to tuck them up under the dash. Why fix what you can hide? As I did this, the car shut off. I turned the key. Dead, nothing, no power.
What the hell? Panic ensued – I only had a few hours to get the car ready and now I had a bigger problem. I called in my best/smartest car pals for help. We traced the

issue back to the fuse box, but the box was good. Time was ticking, the day job beckoned – I was a frantic mess.
Why me? Why now? And, a few other things unsuitable for print, crossed my mind, and may have passed my lips. With no time and no other options, I called my friends at Motor City Solutions. They came to the rescue, picked up the car and had it diagnosed within 24 hours.
A fried fusible link was the issue. We may have diagnosed this ourselves with more time, but its peculiar location, near the starter tucked between the headers, didn’t make it obvious. The exposed ground wire contacting the dash at the same time the car shut-off may have just been coincidence. The fact that it happened in my garage and not on the road was not. Grandma is always looking out for me in her car.
With time ticking, Motor City took the car directly to the Pilot Transport. The day job kept me from being any part of this transaction. The next time I would see the car would be in St. Ignace. My car was fixed and on its way thanks to nothing short of a Herculean effort by a bunch of caring car folks . . . and then it rained all weekend.
The car made it to St. Ignace, but I never got to drive it across the bridge. Two passes through town in the 15 minutes it was dry enough to do so was all I got. The rain cover and micro-soft towels got more mileage that weekend than the Impala.
See? I told you it was still giving me things to write about.
Now would be the time I wrap this up with some anecdote about cars, and life, and expecting the unexpected, but all I can come up with is, DAMN!
So, that’s the update on the Impala. I would like to tell you it will be the last – but we all know that’s not true.
Stay safe! Have fun and as always thanks for Cruis’n with us!

Hard To Get Spanning the Blue Water Bridge and the gateway to Lake Huron we get a rare glimpse of this Nissan GTR standing still. Perhaps it stopped to take in the views or enjoy a peaceful moment to itself, because keeping the peace isn’t its strong suit. With over 1,300 horses pounding the pavement this street beast is rarely tamed. Subtly seductive, you’re flexing muscle is lost on her. With a quick shift and wave of her wing she’ll be gone before you can deliver your opening pickup line . . . Sorry boys, she’s just hard to get.
