What is ‘Industrial Symbiosis’ ?

Modified from Chertow, Yale 2000

“Industrial symbiosis engages traditionally separate industries and other organisations in a collective approach to competitive advantage involving physical exchanges of materials, energy, water and/or by products together with collaboration on the shared use of assets, logistics, experts and knowledge transfer.”

What our members have said…

• “I know you will be keen to hear that one of your contacts presented us with the best solution, and would like to thank you for enabling the use of NISP resource to  help me arrive at this conclusion for our acrylic waste.”

Mike Walters, Operations Manager, John Lewis & Waitrose

• “NISP has recently put GLASSeco Limited in touch with several useful contacts.  The NISP team had an immediate grasp of our business and a practical understanding of the type of help we needed. We have dealt with numerous government-funded bodies recently but NISP was, by far, the most refreshing agency and the ONLY one that actually delivered what it said it could...

Donald Crawley, Joint Managing Director, GLASSeco Limited

How it works…

Really simple principle: it’s all about making matches!

• Everyone writes stuff they ‘HAVE’ and ‘WANT’ on the slips provided• These are circulated to all tables in the room and MATCHES made!• NISP facilitators on each table are there to drive the process

What do you ‘HAVE’?

Unwanted resources, services on offer etc.

What do you ‘WANT’?

Materials, space, services etc

Page 28: "NISP Waste Exchange Approach" - Robert Spencer, NISP

HAVES and WANTS

So what sort of stuff are we talking about?

‘Waste’ materials such as:– Plastic– Wood– Metal– Glass– Biodegradable – food & green waste– Textiles– Construction materials– Electrical equipment

Page 29: "NISP Waste Exchange Approach" - Robert Spencer, NISP

HAVES and WANTS

Solutions / new uses for ‘waste’:– Re-use– Segregation & dismantling– Recycling– Processing

• Composting• Anaerobic digestion• Thermal treatment

– Space / land / storage– Manufacturing– Expertise– Transport

Page 30: "NISP Waste Exchange Approach" - Robert Spencer, NISP

What happens now

First 15 minutes:

• Introductions & exchange business cards• Fill in your ‘HAVE’ slips (left hand side)

– please include as much detail as possible!• Then do the same for your ‘WANT’ slips

Following 10 minute slots:

• ‘HAVES’ are read out on your table – if you ‘WANT’ it, record your name & table no. on the right hand side of the slip…MATCH!

• ‘HAVES’ are circulated & read to each table – again, put your name & table no. on the slip if you WANT it.
