with Eli. Samuel studied and talkedwith the teachers at the temple.There he learned the Word of God.

One night Samuel had alreadygone to sleep, but he was awakened when he hearda voice calling him. Samuel thought it was Eli. Heran into Eli’s room. “Here I am,” said Samuel. Eli saidto young Samuel, “I did not call you. Go back tobed.”

Sauewent back to bed. Again he heard

someone call his name. He ran back to Eli’s room.“Here I am. You called me,” said Samuel. Once moreEli said, “No, I did not call you. Go back to bed.”Samuel was confused, but he obeyed Eli and wentback to bed.

No sooner was Samuel back in his bed whenhe heard the voice. Samuel went to Eli once more.Then Eli realized it was the voice of God callingSamuel. “My son,” Eli said, “Go and lie down. If thevoice calls you again, say, “Speak, God, for your

servant is listening.”

Saue returned to bed. Soon he heard thevoice calling him again. Samuel did as Eli told him.He said, “Speak, God, for your servant is listening.”God spoke to Samuel. The young boy listenedcarefully to everything that God had to say.

In the morningSamuel was afraid to tellEli what had happened. Elisaid to Samuel, “Do not beafraid. Tell me what Godsaid to you.” Eli knows itwas important to hear themessage God had givenSamuel. So Samuel told Elieverything God had said.

God often spoke toSamuel after that night.Samuel served as aprophet of God. After

God would speak to him,he would talk to God’speople.
