ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Untangling personal problems might take more time than the impatient Lamb expected. But it’s important to hang in there until all those knotty situations are straightened out.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You still need to work out last-minute snags in your dealings with a rival. Hold your ground de-spite a perceived lack of support. Things should turn around before you know it.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Best not to delay preparing for that upcoming family event. The sooner you get things started, the better chance you have of finding potential problems and making needed changes.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The roman-tic Moon Child might be reluctant to see the reality behind that “ideal” situation. But by midweek, the practical Crab emerges to help clear away the moonbeams.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Big Cat might be receptive to more “purr-sua-sion” to get you to agree to a workplace change, make sure you can distinguish the fine line between facts and flattery.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your positive attitude in the workplace helps to get you noticed by the right people. Now go ahead and use some of that new self-confi-dence to help shore up a personal relation-ship.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Al-though you might still have to work out some problems with a business partner, things go more smoothly on the home front. An investment opportunity might need more study.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t be reluctant to act on your suspicion. Even if others see nothing wrong, the astute Scorpio could sense an underlying problem that isn’t always obvious on the surface.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to Decem-ber 21) A new opportunity presents some obstacles that need to be dealt with as soon as possible. Delaying action in hopes that the problems will go away could be coun-terproductive.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A friend or family member’s request might carry some hidden factors that could later create problems. Be sure you know all the facts before you make your decision.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A setback in implementing a plan could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Use the downtime to rework your original concepts and see where changes could be made.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might not be consciously fishing for com-pliments, but admit it -- won’t you feel great when your efforts are noticed? So accept the praise gracefully. You earned it.

•It was noted British lexicographer Sam-uel Johnson who made the following sage observation: “The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him ab-solutely no good.”

•If an American black bear is pregnant when it goes into hibernation, she could give birth without ever awakening. While she is still in her torpor, her body will draw on reserves of fat to produce milk to nurse her young. However, if something that could be danger-ous to her young comes within 50 feet of the den, the mother bear’s heart rate will spike and she will wake to defend the cubs.

•If you happen to be fortunate enough to spot numerous bears together in the wild (or unfortunate enough, depending on the cir-cumstances), thanks to this column you’ll be able to call the group by its correct col-lective noun: It’s a sloth or sleuth of bears.

•If you’ve ever looked closely at a zipper, you may have noticed the letters YKK on the tab. The letters stand for Yoshida Ko-gyo Kabushikigaisha, which is Japanese for “Yoshida Manufacturing Shareholding Company,” which produces most of the zip-pers found in the U.S.

•A recent study by scientist Karl Berg sug-gests that an adult green-rumped parrotlet, a tiny bird native to Venezuela, will “name” its babies, assigning each a particular series of peeps to identify it. Not only that, other parrotlets then learn to associate that exact series of peeps with that particular bird, and actually use the sounds to get its attention.(c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

They Lived to be 100The U.S. Census Bureau has released a long-term research report on the differenc-es between centenarians and seniors who are age 65 and older.

Pulling in data from a previous report, Cen-tenarians 2010, this research is an overview of 2007 to 2011 and focuses on marital sta-tus, education, veteran status, income and poverty levels.

Here’s what it learned: •Women made up the majority of those who had lived a century or more, at 81 percent. In the over-65 group, women were at 57 percent.

•Marital status: Most centenarians (82 per-cent) were widowed. Because of age, the over-65 group had a lower rate of 29 per-cent widowed.

•Education: A surprising 43 percent of cen-tenarians did not finish high school. In the over 65 age group, 23 percent didn’t re-ceive a diploma. Of those who went on to college, 15 percent of centenarians earned a bachelor’s degree or higher, with 21 per-cent of the over-65 group earning a degree.

•Veterans: Only 0.5 percent of women cen-tenarians were veterans, but the number wasn’t much higher for women in the over-65 group, with 1.15 percent veterans.

•Income: Of the centenarians, 83 percent received Social Security, compared to 88 percent of the over-65 group. The amount of benefits was lower, of course, for the centenarians because Social Security is based on what you put into the system. Of the centenarians, 17 percent lived in pov-erty, compared to 9 percent of the over-65 group.

Want to live to be a centenarian? Dr. Thom-as Perls, co-author of “Living to 100: Les-sons in Living to Your Maximum Potential at Any Age,” has some tips: Be adaptable and flexible. Get rid of stress. Be optimis-tic. Exercise. Own a pet. Those are good goals for people of any age.

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot per-sonally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Please Send questions via email to [email protected].

Learn Why Millions ApplyOnline For Social Security

(NAPS)—For millions of people across Amer-ica, the concept of re-tirement has changed significantly. “Re-tiring” used to mean taking it easy. Today, it’s a more active time than ever; a time for new interests, being in-volved with family and friends, volunteering, and paying attention to being physically and mentally fit.

Retirees live healthier, work longer, and play harder. It’s the new normal. Even the momen-tous act of applying for retirement benefits—which used to require a visit to the Social Se-curity office—has become more convenient, easier, and faster for busy “retirees.”

Thinking about applying for your benefits? Begin at Social Security’s website, www.so-cialsecurity.gov. It offers a wealth of services, information, and tools to help you plan for a better retirement. When you are ready, you can apply for benefits online, from home. No ap-pointment, no travel to a busy government of-fice, no worry that you’ve brought all the right paperwork.

The online retirement application is easy to use. In most cases, it will take you less than 15 min-utes to complete. You also can save your unfin-ished work at any point and finish later. There are no forms to sign and usually no documen-tation is required. Social Security will process your application and contact you if any further information is needed.

Before you apply, you need to consider several factors. For people born in 1938 or later, “full retirement age” has gradually increased, and for people born after 1959, it is age 67. You can apply for reduced benefits as early as age 62. You also should consider whether you want to work in retirement, health issues, your family’s monetary needs, and future financial obliga-tions. Social Security offers several online tools to help you explore your retirement options.

Regardless of your age, there are advantages to creating a personal my Social Security account. It gives you complete access to your personal information, including your lifetime earnings and estimated retirement, disability, and survi-vor’s benefits for you and your family. There are advanced security features to protect your privacy. You can have unique text message codes sent to your cell phone each time you sign in.

There’s even an address bar at the top of your screen indicating the website has an extended validation certificate. This means your infor-mation will be encrypted and that the website has been verified by a certification authority.

When you receive Social Security benefits, your personal account will be the best way to manage them, enabling you to start or change direct deposit of your payments, get proof of benefits, and more.

More than 7 million people have chosen to re-tire the fast, convenient, and stress-free way—online. In fact, last year, almost 50 percent re-tired online.

Choose the most convenient option to retire by visiting www.socialsecurity.gov.

Applying for Social Security Benefits has

never been easier.

A Heat stroke is the most serious form of heat injury and is considered to be a medical emer-gency. If you know that someone has had a heat stroke, you should call 911 immediately and render first aid until help arrives.

A Heat stroke can kill or cause damage to the brain. Although studies show that a heat stroke mainly affects people over age 50, it can also have an adverse effect on the young folks too.

A Heat stroke often be-gins with milder heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, fainting, and heat exhaustion. But you can have a Heat Stroke even if you have no previous signs of heat injury.

The medical definition of a Heat Stroke is “a core body temperature greater than 105 degrees Fahrenheit, with complications involving the central nervous system that occur after expo-sure to high temperatures.” You may have other symptoms including nausea, seizures, confu-sion, disorientation, and sometimes loss of con-sciousness or you may even lapse into a coma.

Other symptoms may include:•Throbbing headache

•Dizziness and light-headedness•Lack of sweating despite the heat

•Red, hot, and dry skin•Muscle weakness or cramps

•Nausea and vomiting•Rapid heartbeat, which may be

either strong or weak•Rapid, shallow breathing

•Behavioral changes such as confusion, disori-entation, or staggering

•Seizures•Unconsciousness

If you even think that someone has had a Heat Stroke, immediately call 911 or take them to a hospital. Any delay seeking medical help could be fatal.

While waiting for help to arrive, begin per-forming first aid treatment. Try to move the person into an air-conditioned room, or a cool, shady area, and, if possible, remove any unnec-essary clothing. Other cooling methods include fanning air over them while wetting their skin with water, applying ice-packs to their armpits, groin, neck and back, or getting them into a shower or tub of cool water or even an ice bath. If help has not arrived quickly, you may call the Hospital Emergency Room for additional instructions.

After recovering from a Heat Stroke, you should avoid being in hot weather for a while. Take it easy until your doctor says that you can resume your normal activities.

Symptoms and Treatment

Did you know that your petcan have a Heat Stroke?

It’s true. They do not have an adequate cooling system so they are prone to having heat related emergencies. If you think your pet is experiencing a Heat Stroke, get them into a shady area or cool room as soon as possible. Pour some cool water over their head and body or even get them into a bath-tub. Never use ice water or ice as this can cause hypothermia or even lead to shock. As soon as the pet is cooled down, call a local emergency Vet Clinic and ask for assistance. Even if your pet is not showing signs of a Heat Stroke (after cool-ing them down), they may have experienced some internal damge. Get them to a Vet as soon as possible.

Is It A Light Bulbor A Darkness Absorber?

“Honey,” the estranged wife calls from the base-ment, “Another light bulb is blown down here.” Now the husband knows better. For one thing, it is not a light bulb. How many times must he explain it to her? It is called a DARKNESS ABSORBER. A darkness “WHAT” you may ask. A darkness ab-sorber... This is how it works. You take a darkness absorber (light bulb) and screw it into the socket. Then you flip the switch ‘UP’ or to the ‘ON’ position. At that moment you probably think the light bulb comes on. IT DOES NOT COME ON! The darkness absorber simply vacuums the darkness from the room and holds it there until you release it by flipping the switch

‘DOWN’ or to the ‘OFF’ position. Now you may ask, ‘How do you explain the light bulb being blown?’ There is a simple explanation for this, I assure you. Each time darkness is absorbed and then released, small particles of darkness remain inside the darkness absorber acting as a filter. Even-tually, the darkness absorber gets full of darkness and can hold no more. Therefore, when you flip the ‘absorber’ switch, nothing happens. You must then replace the darkness absorber. Still think this is silly, huh? OK, take the full darkness absorber (blown light bulb for the unbelievers), hold it to your ear and shake it. Did you hear that? That, my friend, is DARKNESS. Still not so sure? OK, look at the bottom of the darkness ab-sorber. It’s black isn’t it? Well there you go. You are holding a darkness absorber full of darkness. “HONEY!!!” Oops, gotta go change that light bulb.

Or Is It Really A Darkness Absorber?

My real name is Sheba Diamond but my daddy and granddaddy (both hu-man’s of course) call me Baby Girl. This could be because I am so pre-cious and I never get into any trou-ble. Well, that’s not true but they always tell me that they love me. I love them too and I like to show my affection by attacking their ears and toes. I also like to play fetch with old socks and my dog toys. It is so much fun. I also have a new Sister named Gracie. She is a miniature Schnauzer. Man is she so hyper. That girl is all over the place. But I really do love her.
