IIRR and EFA GOALS

Goal 1 Expanding and improving comprehensive early childhood care and education, especially for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

Goal 2Ensuring that by 2015 all children, particularly girls, children in difficult circumstances and those belonging to ethnic minorities, have access to, and complete, free and compulsory primary education of good quality.

According to the 2011 EFA Global Monitoring Report, Kenya has shown remarkable growth in

primary school enrolment with a GER of 110% and a NER of 82.6% (2009, UNDP), making it one of

the few countries in the region expected to achieve the EFA goals by 2015. This is attributed to the

introduction of Free Primary Education,

2. EDUCATION PROGRAM

Internationally, IIRR targets education for marginalized communities both rural and peri-urban areas.

IIRR believes that education is not only a basic human right but critical to human/community development.

Implementation strategy

Implements activities thru Local Partnerships-9 local community CBO’s

In 2006, IIRR initiated the Pastoralist Education Project (PEP) in Kenya,and 2006 initiated one in Ethiopia.

PEP has adapted flexible education approach that fits with pastoralists’ mobility patterns and lifestyle.

beneficiaries

Targets out of school children in pastoralist communities in the counties of Samburu, Isiolo and Marsabit.

Expanded education access through establishment and support of 36 learning centers. Currently, Supporting 24 primary schools and partnership with 7 secondary schools with total enrollment of 4,305 learners
