Designing decisions/functions

in actual non-NGN IPTV solutions

Aggregation – bringing together all the available content from where ever its available (satellite or terrestrial, direct from content providers)

Acquisition – authorization infrastructure for the acquired rights to distribute that content to your subscribers

Processing – processing the content into your defined format, MPEG2, MPEG4/H.264, VC-1, WM9 or combinations

Encryption – protect your revenue and the rights of your programmers

Middleware – include IPTV applications and services, web-like user interface, what your customer sees, their ability to personalize, navigate; their user experience

Distribution – making it available to your network – centrally or regionally

Network – multicast or unicast, and for how far

Delivery – your last mile into the home; utilize existing or a new deployment

CPE – choices, esthetics, marketability, delivery, installation, support

Personalization for Future Multimedia

Most of the end user usually really don’t care over which technology

we provide them the service, what they care: Price

Quality of service & reliability, support

Quality & Quantity of Content (TV channel portfolio, VoD assets, HD)

Usability (friendly UI) & feature and services

What they do not know yet but probably will want it when available: changing user experience – via personalization, quality, new services, mobility, user

interactions/networking, targeted services (Ad), multi-devices, more entertainment, tele(TV)

- services

The main goal of NGN based IPTV is standard based SP solution &

UE, integration with transport network, unified infrastructure for all

services (NGN & IPTV), user data for personalization,

NG-IPTV will provide new kind of services like integration with

communication services, user generated content, content

personalization, recommendation, personalized channels, FMC

continuation, etc. Source: IPTV World Forum 2009, Technical symposium

NGN based IPTV

General

characteristics

Non-NGN based IPTV

architecture

NGN/IMS based IPTV

architecture

Standardization Vendors & industry driven First NGN standards is in focus of standard bodies (ETSI TISPAN, ITU-T)

Modularity and

Open protocols

Low, alternative and proprietary protocols

Higher, standardized open protocols should be used (SIP, Diameter, …)

Media processing

and service

control separation

Functions are highly integrated in network elements and middleware

Separated service control from delivery and media control, should be more scalable, distribution on hierarchical base

Control functions Stream delivery control oriented Session control oriented – streams, communication sessions, ..

Transport control

functions

Missing specialized elements, less mechanisms to effect from application the transport control

Elements in the architecture for providing QoS (in TISPAN - NASS, RACS), IMS control resource mang.

non-NGN based vs. IMS based IPTV architecture

Page 19: NGN Based IPTV Tutorial 2011 v3-Final

NGN based IPTV

General

characteristics

Non-NGN based IPTV

architecture

NGN/IMS based IPTV

architecture

Network

convergence

Specialized architecture for fixed or mobile network (more fixed oriented)

Common service and control layer independent from multiple fixed, wireless and mobile access & delivery networks

Application &

Services

More-less limited to legacy IPTV, however, set of services may be extended by adding interfaces to middleware

Real converged services as described in ITU-T converged service framework (broadcasting & communication convergence)

Service

Capabilities and

Enablers

No common service capabilities or service enablers, usually should be used just those included in IPTV application server

Shareable service enablers to support a number of more complex applications should be also available for IPTV related applications (messaging, presence,..)

Service

integration

Limited to each IPTV service platform

Possible across service layer of IMS based NGN architecture

Security Security covered more by CA nor DRM systems, different proprietary AAA mechanisms per solutions

Specialized border and security functions incorporate in standards, Security covered also on transport layer as well as content protection

End devices Limited number of STBs interworking with IPTV soultions

More standardized devices - integrated & compatible with IMS based IPTV

IPTV Use Cases selected in Netlab

Use Case 3: DVB-H and IMS interconnection

The interconnection allows:

Enable to combine DVB-H broadcast delivery with

unicast delivery over mobile IP access (UMTS, LTE)

IPTV related streaming content and file based content

delivery

Service discovery and service announcement,

through unicast network, metadata delivery

QoS monitoring allows handover from unicast delivery

to broadcast delivery

Hybrid IPTV service with IMS

Prototype and standardization of hybrid models using

IMS and DVB-H (contributions to ETSI TR 182 030 )

Interconnection of IMS based IPTV systems and

roaming scenarios have been evaluated and advanced

use cases have been presented

Benefits

Vertical handover on different access networks, e.g. when point-

to-point access network is congested

More flexibility in service creation and delivery, e.g. user

generated content, interactivity features

Integrated Authentication, Authorizing and Accounting

mechanisms with NGN technologies

Hybrid IPTV service with IMS

Goals: Hybrid IPTV with IMS and DVB-H

Summary of benefits of standardized NGN based TV

1. Single architecture for Fixed IPTV, Mobile TV, hybrid SAT products

2. More TV services as any existing non-NGN middleware solution

3. Integration of NGN (converged voice, rich communication) with TV

services

4. Multi vendor, open environment, open interfaces, vendor-lock

prevention, interoperability/test

5. Integration to NGN transport control (QoS, resource reservation, lower

cost for network), common user profiles, integration to OSS/BSS

6. Application development, standardized browser

7. Standardized end devices and integration with home network

8. Content protection and service protection for FMC environment

9. Cost savings – CAPEX/OPEX for middleware, end devices, apps

development

10. Regulatory requirements

Service and architecture achievements by TISPAN

1. Most comprehensive set of services and features (over 40) – best state of art

2. Most simple architecture (compare to ITU-T, OIPF) with well defined interfaces,

functions

3. Most detailed protocol specification and implementation guidance for IPTV

4. Full chain of consistent IPTV specifications – architecture, protocols, security,

test spec, end devices

5. Most of the deployed NGN architecture for PSTN/ISDN replacement is based

on ETSI TISPAN R2

6. Fully compatible with DVB IPTV (non-IMS) or ETSI TISPAN NGN architecture

7. Show mapping of other standards to TISPAN (ITU-T, OIPF, 3GPP MBMS/PSS,

ATIS)

8. Support for mobile and hybrid scenarios, interconnection and roaming for IPTV

9. Integrated with user profile, transport control, content delivery infrastructure

10. ETSI special task force STF413 deliver TISPAN R3 test specification for

interoperability testing in June 2011

52 3rd Int NGN Workshop ngnlab.eu Eugen Mikoczy, 02.11.2011, Delft, Nederland

IPTV standards achieve required level needed for first implementation (2-3Y)

NGN/IMS became mature solution/standard mainly deployed for fixed voice

(replacement/innovation) but mobile and enhanced multimedia can coming

soon/later … (RCS, VoLTE, NG-IPTV)

NGN based IPTV can provide converged platform to deliver advance IPTV

services (not fully available in current solutions) but just time will show us if

TISPAN or other standards will be implemented (mainly because complexity)

New multimedia services like MMTel, RCS or NG-IPTV can leveraging of IMS

investment and previous operators experience

NGN/ IMS is only telco converged and standardized architecture for common

service control platform in transition period to Future Networks architecture

(beyond 2020)

Unmanaged networks and OTT technology will be extensively growing with

better and faster access networks (Internet of X)

Telco’s and Telco vendors should focus on industry advantages and provide

environment for new converged multimedia services
