Reports

The Student End of Year Reports are now in the final stage of review and these will be ready for release on Friday, 14th

of December. Each student’s report provides great detail about their individual learning growth throughout the year.

Please take time to share the many successes in the report with you child.

Classes for 2019

Thank you to all parents who took the opportunity to notify me of any concerns regarding student placement for 2019.

From these communications I created a brief summary and directions for the teachers to use when they formed the

classes for next year. The teaching teams take into account student academic achievement, friendship, compatibility

specific needs and then use the ‘Classmaker’ software to carefully formulate class groups. These class groups are now

being reviewed by teaching teams, specialists and school leadership prior publication on Monday, 17th of December.

Staffing News

The end of each school year is a time of significant staff movements in all schools as teachers seek promotion, relocation

or a new challenge. For some teachers, the movement is related to their growing family. While the movement out of

Mount View will be seen by some parents as a concern I believe that movement brings opportunity for renewal and

invigoration. As new teachers come into Mount View they bring their enthusiasm and experience to our school. This

enables the school to continue to innovate and improve while building on the established and highly regarded

International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.

On behalf of the Mount View community I would like to thank the following people for their wonderful contribution to

our school over many years. Congratulations to those who have gained promotion positions in government schools.

Alison Rees has been promoted to the Principal position at Templestowe Valley PS. Alison has been an Assistant

Principal at MVPS for nearly ten years and she can be very proud of her work leading the school to becoming an IB

World School. I am certain that Templestowe Valley will thrive under Alison’s leadership.

Kellie Stewart will be taking twelve months leave to be the Acting Assistant Principal at Jells Park PS. Kellie has been

teaching at MVPS for eighteen years in a wide range of roles. Since taking on a Learning Specialist/Team Leader role

this year Kellie has sought and achieved a significant advancement in responsibility in education. This is a wonderful

opportunity for Kellie to build her leadership skill set to benefit government education.

A number of teachers have been recruited to other IB schools in recognition of their high level expertise in IB PYP

pedagogy. I have granted twelve months leave for each of these teachers to experience teaching in other school

settings.

Eamon Halliday and Kate Osborn will take up opportunities to teach at Caulfield Grammar in Malvern. Brianna Lee will

take up a teaching position at St Leonard’s College. Each of these teachers have been valued and highly effective

teachers at MVPS and we wish them every success as they broaden their experiences in education within the IB PYP

network. Tracey Diedrich will take up a classroom teaching position at Wesley College. Tracey has made a wonderful

contribution to MVPS as both a classroom and PE teacher.

A number of teachers will be taking the opportunity to craft their specialist teaching expertise in other government

schools. Jude Insole will be taking up the Visual Arts position at Hartwell PS. Jude can be very proud of the manner in

which she has taught and inspired the students to do their very best in Visual Arts. The high quality of work displayed

by students at all levels is testament to Jude’s great work. Simon Orenshaw has completed a very successful first year

in teaching and he will take up the Physical Education role at Bayswater PS. Rebecca Lim will take up an opportunity to

extend her time fraction teaching Mandarin at Waverley Christian College. We thank Rebecca for her enthusiasm and

energy in teaching Mandarin at MVPS over many years.

Teachers who will each commence a period of family leave from Mount View include Kayleigh McCabe and Vanessa

Ng. We wish them both all the very best as they begin a new phase of family life. Their contribution to MVPS has been

of great benefit to so many students and we look forward to seeing them with their babies during 2019.

Some teachers will be leaving Mount View having completed the 2018 school year in order to take up a range of

teaching opportunities as they arise in 2019. On behalf of the Mount View community I thank you for a fine year as

part of the MVPS team and wish you all the very best as your careers develop through a range of schools and

experiences. Teachers leaving Mount View to take up a range of roles include Kate Kenna, Helena Gong, Monica Liang

and Mark Coulston.

New Teachers

Those teachers who are beginning their teaching careers are supported in a number of ways in order that they are able

to readily meet the high professional standards required at our school. Each of the graduate teachers are supported

through:

Assignment to a Year Level Team

Provision of an ongoing mentor

Participation in the Victorian Institute of Teaching registration program

Dedicated weekly planning time

Collegiate coaching provided by John Kennedy

Annual Review of School Goals

Each year schools are guided by their Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). This plan reflects the goals of the school for one year of an overarching four year Strategic Plan. 2018 was the first year of our new Strategic Plan. Over the past month staff have been reflecting on our successes and collaboratively forming the next steps in each of our endeavours.

Some of the highlights from our year have included:

Strengthening of student engagement via:

o learning through Play in the Junior School,

o enhanced use of digital technologies and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM) in the classroom,

o enhanced Sensory Motor Program in Physical Education,

o greater connection to classroom learning in Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Mandarin,

o consolidating the use of Circle Solutions and Discussion Circles to provide more voice and

empowerment to students.

Remodelling the school’s approach to behaviour management with a focus on supporting students

who make inappropriate choices, as opposed to punitive punishments.

The establishment of a whole school approach to Writing.

Improved student outcomes in English - Speaking and Listening, represented by greater breadth in

cohort student achievement data.

Increased integration of STEM in our classroom Units of Inquiry.

Enriching the Transition Program to provide students transitioning from K – P, 6 – 7 and through the

year levels a supportive pathway to ‘Step-Up’.

Remodelling and resourcing the leadership team to strengthen the distributive leadership structure of

the school.

Enhancing Professional Learning to provide staff with ongoing capacity building via a Collegiate

Coaching Program.

A greater focus on differentiation and ‘Point of Need Teaching’ through improved use of student

assessment data and purposeful teaching (not teaching a student something they already know).

As we enter the 2019 school year the Strategic Plan Team will celebrate these successes in our Annual Report and formulate our 2019 AIP. These will be shared with the school community early in 2019.

Student Behaviour Management @ MVPS

Recently concerns have been raised within our community about behaviour incidents happening

at our school. As a school we take behavioural issues seriously and have the wellbeing and welfare

of our students as a priority.

Our aim is that all students need to feel that school is a safe place where:

- People care about them

- Their needs for support, respect and friendship are met

- They are able to get help to work out problem.

Bullying is not acceptable. Bullying is a repeated form of harassment. A

person is bullied when one or more other people expose them regularly

and over time to negative or harmful actions. Bullies are people who

deliberately set out to intimidate, exclude, threaten and/or hurt others

repeatedly.

We ask parents to work with us, firstly making making contact with the

classroom teacher so that all concerns can be readily addressed. Our

teachers are available to discuss issues by face-to –face conversation,

email or a phone call.

When addressing behaviour incidents, the teacher involved speaks with

both the victim and perpetrator. For the victim we support them with

empathy and understanding. The use of strategies such five finger and

programs such as Mpower girls and revved up boys are implemented.

For the perpetrator, restorative conversations occur with teacher and

further sessions with our Health and Wellbeing co-ordinators are

conducted to discuss the students’ goals to support positive behaviours.

Parents are contacted to brief them on the details of the incident and any

follow up meetings (where needed) are organised.

Please see flow chart of our Student Behaviour Management at Mount

View Primary school.

If you have any other concerns, please contact Bianca Gatherum, Assistant Principal (Student

Behaviour) [email protected]

Fruit Smoothie Fundraiser- Friday 23rd November

The weather was not kind to us for our Fruit Smoothie fundraiser but it didn’t dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of

the Green Team. They all pitched in making smoothies, taking orders, counting money, washing and drying cups,

running raffles and cleaning up. A huge thank-you to all of the Green Team for donating milk and fruit to our stall.

Also a very big thank-you to Rebecca (Jessica’s mum) for making smoothies with the Year 5 and 6 students. Thanks

also to Mr Blyth and Ms Tran for all their help on the day and the use of their middle room between their classrooms.

Thank-you also to Nigel for the tables.

A massive thank-you to all students who bought a cup (or borrowed a cup) and bought a smoothie. Thanks to you we

raised $276. The Green Team plan to donate $130 to the Amari Project and the remaining money will be used to

purchase new buckets and tongs to clean up our yard.

Congratulations to Alex O (4JB), Nysa (3SK), Elodie (0KS) and Austin (0KH) who won the raffle. Each student who

purchased a smoothie went into the draw to win a handmade recycled sock creature. Thank-you to Freya (4JB) who

made the creations and ran the raffle.
