o Camp 2 - 4EH, 4AO, 4JT, 4KK from Wednesday August 22nd to Friday August 24th

Year 1 & 2 students have their 10 day swimming program starting on Monday August 27th and running until Friday September 7th

Year 5 students will be being very creative and musical as they prepare for the Year 5 production to be performed at Wesley College on Tuesday September 18th and Wednesday September 19th

We get to meet our 2019 Preps as they take part in the first 3 sessions of their Transition program. It’s great to see some of our “experienced” Prep students taking the lead and mentoring the younger children as they take part in the 6 session program.

To top it all off, our Year 6 students will be inviting the entire Mount View community to join them in the last week of term as they “show off” their understandings, talents, knowledge, thinking, creativity – everything they’ve learnt and developed over their 7 years of primary schooling - at their Exhibition celebrating the transdisciplinary theme of Where We Are in Place and Time.

Keep an eye out on Compass for more information about all of these events and more!!

Exhibition – A Beginning

Every year in Term 3 we celebrate the success of our Year 6 students with the annual PYP Exhibition. Arguably the most important assessment-based event of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), the Exhibition represents over ten weeks' work for the students who have each chosen their own subject area to investigate.

The Exhibition requires students to engage in a collaborative inquiry process that involves them identifying, investigating and offering solutions to real-life issues or problems in the context of their local and global communities. It provides the platform for students to display the skills, attitudes and behaviours developed throughout their schooling experience in the IB PYP. This year the transdisciplinary theme being investigated is Where We Are in Place and Time.

Every year we see a vast collection of print, multimedia, concept and interactive work be produced by the students and displayed in the school's Senior Learning Centre culminating in an evening when all members of the community can come and share in the learning.

On Wednesday it was my pleasure to be invited by the Year 6 team to work with all their students on revisiting and reflecting on their understandings of the IB Primary Years Programme. I had the BEST time. Our current Year 6 students are AMAZING and I can’t wait to see what they achieve over the next 10 weeks of independent learning. Their questions and conversations were of an extremely high level; showing a real depth of knowledge and understanding (also remembering that they are 11 and 12 year olds!) Their comments were insightful as they tackled a task that I often get teachers to do when learning about the PYP. It was my honour and pleasure to work with our students and the Year 6 teachers and if the 100 minutes that I spent with them is an example of their commitment and enthusiasm for Exhibition – we are in for an absolute treat at the end of term.

Being at School ~ The Importance of Full Time Attendance

We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. School participation helps students to develop important skills, knowledge and values which set them up for further learning and participation in their community. Research tells us that children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives.

There is no safe number of days for missing school. Your child is expected at school each day. Every Day Counts

Schooling is compulsory for children and young people aged from 6 – 17 years unless an exemption from attendance or enrolment has been granted. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future. One of the most common misconceptions when it comes to school attendance is the theory that it matters least of all in the first few years. In fact the opposite is true. Evidence shows that if attendance rates can be improved from pre-school to Year 1, then greater benefits will accrue in later years of schooling. We know that developing a culture of regular attendance patterns in the early years is a strong predictor of learning and life opportunities. Each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. A student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

Late Arrivals Process

We understand that sometimes students arrive late to school and this can be for a variety of reasons. Parents need to be aware of the process for late arrivals and the fact that this is recorded on the student’s record.

Start of school at Mount View is at 8:50am. At that time, teachers mark rolls for the morning and students begin learning. Yard duty teachers are in their areas from 8:35 – 8:50am. After that, they head to classes to begin learning sessions.

Any student who arrives from 9:00am onwards is considered late, and MUST sign in at the Office.

At that time, parents of Prep and Year 1 students need to escort their child to the Office, complete the paperwork and take them to class.

Last week there was a very luck near miss when one of our late arriving Preps turned and ran back out to the car as it was driving off. It was only through the very quick actions of another parent that he wasn’t hit by the car.

To all parents – PLEASE:

ensure that your child is at school on time for an 8:50am start.

discuss the Late Sign In process for those rare times when this might happen

discuss road safety with your child and how they are not to leave the safety of the footpath or approach moving vehicles.

ICAS – Bianca Gatherum

ICAS – Digital Technologies Awards

Students in Years 3-6 had the opportunity at Mount View to take part in the international competitions (ICAS) run by the University of New South Wales. ICAS provides an opportunity for all students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation. They also provide schools and teachers with comprehensive reporting of results and give parents helpful information regarding their child’s performance in the areas of Computer Skills, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. Mount View teachers use this information for planning learning and assessing students.

All students will receive a certificate and an individual student results letter including information on which questions they answered correctly as well as the average mark for the state. The student results letter is useful for highlighting students’ areas of strength or weakness. Certificates are awarded for High Distinction (Top 1%), Distinction (next 10%), Credit (next 25%) and Merit (next 10%) of achievements, as well as for Participation.

Students ICAS Digital Technologies certificates will be sent home with students on Monday 23rd July.

We will be recognising and presenting ICAS Digital Technologies - High Distinction awards at our whole school assembly on Monday 23rd July @ 2:50pm. The students receiving these awards are:

• Year 4 – Siddharth M, Marcus L, Andy W, Vivienne H, Jian-Yu

• Year 6 – Daniel C, Garv S

Parents may log on to www.eaa.unsw.edu.au to obtain students results, using the students TAP-ID and PIN which is outlined in the student’s results letter.

Staff Professional Learning Program

The start of the term started with two intense days of learning for our teachers and Education Support Officers (ESO). There were five workshops held on-site over these two days. All teachers and leaders were involved in a 2-day IB PYP workshop and the ESO were looking at Foundations for Teaching Literacy. The four IB PYP workshops focused on different aspects of learning which included:

the pedagogy of inquiry and how this engages the learner and allows them to transfer their new learning across disciplines and how this is such a transdisciplinary approach

concept-based learning. Teachers explored the impact that concepts have on learning and teaching and the importance of a conceptually rich curriculum.

the concept of Action and how we get children to take authentic action in order to demonstrate their understanding of their new learning

transdisciplinary learning. Teachers discussed constructivism and how learners make meaning through inquiry and making connections across and between disciplines.

The PYP workshop leaders were exceptionally experienced practitioners who came from across Asia Pacific – Adelaide, New Zealand and Singapore. We were incredibly fortunate to be able to share in their knowledge and to have them leading the development of our understandings. All of them complimented our staff on their understandings and commitment to learning and

A very big “Thank You” to our own Debbie Brewster. Debbie is Mount View’s resident speech pathologist and she developed and led the 2-day program for our ESO. We are extremely fortunate to have Debbie working with our MVPS students and teachers. Her knowledge and expertise in the development of language and literacy development is extensive, the manner in which she presents and guides learning is gentle and inviting and everyone walks away feeling valued and enriched. Thank you very much Debbie.

Parenting Ideas ~ Children’s eSafety

Technology is a wonderful thing as long as it is used safely and responsibly. We take safeguarding and on-line safety very seriously at Mount View PS. We want to work with you to keep your children safe. Please be aware that if we have any concerns about children accessing inappropriate computer games or social media sites, we will contact you to discuss our concerns.

No doubt that over the holiday period your children have spent more time using technology than what they might during the school term. It is important that parents are aware of the different social media that children begin to access/want to access during this time, and to be prepared before it’s too late. Whilst the legal age is 13 to sign up to various online accounts, we know that children are likely to sign up to these things with or without parent consent before they are of the legal age.

We know that parents have continuing issues in regard to children participating safely online and she thought this link may be useful. Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner:

It’s a brilliant website with a lot of useful information.

The poster below has come from another school and very simply lays out some guidelines for keeping yourself – your children – safe on the internet. You might like to spend some time discussing these with your children.

STATE Cross Country These 7 superstars headed off on a road trip to Bundoora Park on Thursday to compete amongst the “Best of the Best” at the State Cross Country Championships. It was a fantastic day and the girls were outstanding ambassadors for our school. Emily K competed in her age group and finished the race with a strong finish. She is to be commended on her cross country success this year. Emily showed dedicated to training as she ran up and down stairs on a cruise during her holidays.

Liyana, Cynthia, Elissa, Saskia, Asmi and Aanya competed as multi class athletes and all have shown huge improvements in their stamina over the course of the cross country season. A highlight has been the connections they’ve made with each other and also with other multi class athletes from various schools across Victoria.

Special congratulations goes to Saskia who was the Multi Class State Champion for her age. Elissa and Cynthia ran personal bests and both finished 2nd in their age groups! The girls finished using every last bit of energy they had! Well done girls!!

Special mention to the wonderful families who came along to support the team throughout the cross country season. We couldn’t do it without you!

Girls Division Soccer Tournament On the 19th of July, 24 girls went to Gardiners Creek to play in a Division Tournament with other schools.

Mount View had two teams: one blue team, and one gold team. The Gold team’s first game was against Huntingtower. Unfortunately, Mount View Gold lost one goal to 0. On our second game, we played and won! The scores were 1 to 0. After a win and a draw, we played Mount View Blue. During that game, everyone was defending well, made good goals and Gold beat Mount View Blue 4 to 0. Mount View Blue did a great job on defending even though they lost.

After all the competitions, the supervisors were counting the scores. There was a draw between three schools. When all the teams were back on the bus and we were heading home, Mr. Schultz told us that MOUNT VIEW GOLD HAD WON THE TOURNAMENT!!!!

We are so happy because we are now going to Regionals Soccer.

Children ENTER FOR FREE!

We need your help to get the word out about our Art Show. Every dollar raised through this major fundraiser benefits every child at Mount View.

How can you help? What is your support of our school? This week every eldest child was given:

One (1) book of 5 raffle tickets @ $5.00 each to sell. (Additional books can be collected from the Office once the first book has been sold.) Has your child brought this home? Has your family started selling tickets? There are more books available at school of you would like to take them to work to sell. Every dollar helps!

Next week every eldest child will be given:

One (1) Mount View Art Show flyer to distribute either to non-MVPS relatives or friends or to have displayed within their local area, e.g. milk bars, etc. Can you do this please?

We ask that you take it to a shop, business or community noticeboard and ask to have it displayed until August 26th. This will greatly extend our advertising of the show to the wider community.

Also, if you are able to collect a few more Art Show flyers from the school office and put them in your neighbour’s letterboxes, we would greatly appreciate it.

Just imagine what we might do for our school with that money!

Please remember to sell ALL your Art Show raffle tickets (5 in total @ $5.00 = $25.00) There are great prizes to be won. The raffle ticket books were sent home with your eldest child this week.
