Become a Shelter Provider: 25 Dollars for 25 years Over the course of a year, what can $25 per month do?
• Provide one month of childcare for a homeless infant.
• Provide 5 months of transportation for a homeless job seeker.
• Provide 3 months of diapers for a sheltered child.

AAHS is so happy to welcome new members to our team! We have four new interns from the UGA Social Work Program, a new Volunteer Coordinator (Brittany Loggins), a new JobTREC case manager (Greg Purser) and a new executive director (Shea Post). AAHS is excited to move forward with our new team!
Dear friends and family of the Athens Area Homeless Shelter,
I’d like to introduce myself as the new Executive Director of the shelter. My name is Shea Post, and my professional background is heavily steeped in victim services and client centered, trauma informed care. I am very excited to be in Athens and at the Shelter; every single day I continue to be impressed by the competence and dedication of our staff, as well as the welcoming reception that Athens has offered. Though I was born and raised in Atlanta, I’ve not lived in the South for over 15 years, and it’s good to be home.
Within my first two weeks, I’ve already become enamored with the residents of our shelter. It is difficult not to smile and feel happy when encountering a mischievous little kiddo, and in the early evenings at the shelter, the laughter and activity easily sweeps one up. I feel fortunate to be a part of this place.
Many of you are likely aware that our annual fundraiser, Harvest for the Homeless, is rapidly approaching (November 10th!). I am so looking forward to this – what an opportunity to meet the many, many community members who support our work. We have such a fun evening planned, with wonderful local music and excellent cuisine. Activities include a silent auction and an unbeatable raffle – the grand prize is 52 gift certificates to local Athens restaurants!
Roughly one third of our total budget is provided through the generosity of the community, and we depend on this for everything from diapers to milk to childcare. Your donations have a direct, positive impact on the lives of our residents, assisting them to transition into successful, independent lives. Thank you so very much, and I truly look forward to meeting you at Harvest!

Learn The 2011 Athens-Clarke County point-
in-time count of homeless individuals revealed that there are 407 people in Athens that reported experiencing homelessness at the time of the count.
Athens-Clarke County, Georgia has the highest rate of poverty in counties with a population of more than 100,000 across the United States, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The National Alliance to End Homelessness reports that from 2008 to 2009, the largest increase in homeless subpopulations nationwide was in the number of family households, which increased by over 3,200 households (4% increase).

The Harvest for the Homeless Festival is a meaningful tradition here at the AAHS, when we ask the Athens community to come together in support of the families that our organization serves. This year we will be hosting Harvest in the Rialto Room at the beautiful Hotel Indigo in downtown Athens. Please come join us on Thursday, November 10th, from 7-10PM.
The night will feature local live music, delicious hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, a cash bar, and a raffle with a grand prize of 52 gift certificates to Athens’ restaurants! Raffle tickets are on sale now and are a bargain at only $5 per ticket! Event tickets are $20 and both can be purchased online at www.helpathenshomeless.org. Tickets are also available at the door the night of the event.
Harvest provides essential funding that keeps the shelter running throughout the year. Without the help of the Athens community, we would be unable to provide our residents with the safe and clean environment they need in order to rebuild their lives and become independent.
