It is hard to believe that Christmas is less than a month away. It seems like we just finished handing out Halloween candy and now we are getting ready to hand out Christmas gifts. As I write this Pastor's Note, I find myself looking outside and watching the snow falling. It makes me realize how important snow is for

me especially when it comes to Christmas. If there is no snow, it doesn’t really feel like Christmas. When I was a child, I always remember coming home after our church’s Family Christmas Eve Service with snow falling in the air. Ever since then I have always assumed that it should be snowing on Christmas Eve, especially at night after the worship services. You can imagine how hard it was for me to live in Arizona during Christmas time.

How about you? What do you need to make it feel like Christmas? Is it snow, gifts, or Christmas cookies (especially peanut butter and chocolate)? Or is it a Christmas tree or attending the Christmas Cantata? These things and others shape our Christmas and make it what it is.

Here at St. John’s, we are getting ready to start a new sermon series this Advent and Christmas entitled, "Shaped by the Cross." I know this is a weird title for a sermon series, especially in light of Christmas, but at the same time I think it is the most appropriate. As we read in Hebrews 2:14-15,

"Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he (Christ) himself likewise shared the same things (coming into this world as an infant), so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death."

It was not just Christmas that was shaped by the cross, but Christ himself.

Because of the cross we see the birth of Christ differently. The cross shapes the way we understand the Christmas story since we realize that Christ came into the world not to live, but to die so that through His death we may live. And the beauty is that the cross shapes both our perspective of Christmas and our whole life. It shapes how we live and how we act. It shapes who we are.

This Advent and Christmas season, we invite you to join us to learn more about what it means to be shaped by the cross by attending our Sunday morning worship services; our adult forum entitled, “The Purpose of Christmas,” or our Advent Soup and Song events. Journey with us as we remember Christ’s birth during the Christmas Cantata entitled, "Love Came Down at Christmas" and the Christmas Eve services.

Come and journey with us as we are shaped by the cross this Advent and Christmas season.

St. John’s Christmas Cantata “Love Came Down at Christmas” – Christmas Cantata presented by St. John’s Chancel Choir and OrchestraOur 2014 Christmas Cantata is by Joel Raney, a well-known contemporary composer. Raney’s inspiration for this piece came from Christina Rossetti’s poem, Love Came Down at Christmas, written in 1885. This year’s cantata celebrates the four prominent themes of Advent: God’s Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love.

Among the tunes you will recognize in the cantata are: Silent Night, Holy Night; Love Divine, All Love Excelling; Angels We Have Heard on High; On Christmas Night All Christians Sing; He is Born the Divine Christ Child; O Come, All Ye Faithful; Once In Royal David’s City; Hark the Herald Angels Sing; Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming; O Come, O Come Emmanuel; Away in a Manger and other well-known Christmas songs. Raney skillfully weaves these familiar Christmas songs into a meaningful message of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. In addition to these familiar tunes, you will also hear some original music which Raney composed just for this cantata.

As last year, the cantata will include not only the Chancel Choir and orchestra, but also our St. John’s youth who will join in singing one of the pieces in the cantata, Dona Nobis Pacem, Grant us Peace. The cantata will be presented on December 13 at the 5 p.m. Sanctuary service and on Sunday, December 14 at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sanctuary services. We hope you will join us as we celebrate with great joy the birth of Christ our Savior.

We've been learning the Faith 5 and working to incorporate it into our nightly schedules.

The first step is to SHARE your highs and lows. Everyone shares and when their turn is over, they listen.

The second step is to READ a verse of scripture. You can use the key verse from Sunday School, scripture from Taking Faith Home, Daily Devotions from St. John's, or verses from your own devotional. Not a book, not a chapter - just a verse or two.

The third step is to TALK. Talk about how the passage from scripture might relate to your highs and lows. Ask, "What is God trying to say to us with these words?"

THE FOURTH STEP IS TO PRAY. Thank and praise Jesus for the highs; ask the Holy Spirit's help with the lows; close in Jesus' name.

Group Loyal The annual Christmas party will be held at Panther Creek Country Club on December 9th. The social hour will start at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. For more information, please contact Wendell Hahn at 546-2672 as reservations are necessary.

Dinner Nite Out This month we will be meeting at Mariah’s at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome. Please call Becky Smith if you have any questions at 793-0099.

Men And Women’s Bible Study There will be no Bible Study the 23rd or the 30th of December. Classes will resume on January 6th.

Pre-School Christmas Gift Wrapping As a way to strengthen connections with the pre-school families, the Adult Ministry will be offering Christmas gift wrapping services to the parents of the pre-school students again this year. If you would like to donate gift wrapping paper, there will be a box in the narthex for you to put it in. The dates for the gift wrapping are Monday, December 8th - Thursday, December 11th, morning and afternoon shifts are available. If you would like to help, please sign up at the welcome center or call Mary Ann DeFend at 546-5941.

Knitting and Crocheting Ministries These ministries continue to meet on Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. in the Parish Life Center Lobby; as well as, the 2nd and 4th Tuesday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. so those wanting to attend Women’s Bible Study may do so. In December, they will not be meeting on Tuesday the 23rd. There is a real need for prayer shawls at this time. These are given to those in a special need of comfort. They have yarn if you don’t have any and they are willing to help you if you are wanting to learn. If you have any questions, please call Lynn Ewan at 546-9632.

New Adult Forum Class this Advent SeasonAre you wanting Christmas to be different this year? Do you want the purpose of Christmas not to just be about food, gifts, and family gatherings? If this is you then join us starting on November 30th for our three week Adult Forum entitled, The Purpose of Christmas. These three sessions are taught by Rick Warren on why we celebrate Christmas and how it can change our lives forever. At the very first Christmas, the birth of Jesus, an angel announced three things. In those three statements of the angel, we find the three purposes of Christmas. The three sessions on this DVD looks at each of those purposes: 1. Christmas is a time for celebration, 2. Christmas is a time for salvation, and 3. Christmas is a time for reconciliation. You won't want to miss out on this!

Trunk or TreatSt. John's Trunk or Treat event had 3 roasters of chili, 275 hotdogs, 35 car trunks decorated, games, fire truck, pumpkin painting, 300 plus children and their parents, plus tons and tons of candy; all of these things made the event a great success! Thanks for all everyone did to make this possible!

Grief Support Group Grief…a life altering event that changes your lives forever that is out of our control. If you or someone you care about is struggling with a grief issue, please join our Grief Support Group that is starting at St John’s Lutheran Church on December 15, 2014 in the church parlor from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This group will meet every third Monday of each month at the same time. It will be hosted by Heidi Atkins MA LCPC. She has been practicing Christian counseling in the Springfield area for 18 years. She helps families with solution based God centered therapy to deal with life events and stressors. Heidi would welcome any thoughts, concerns, or questions you may have for her regarding this new support group. She can be reached at 483-7104. To RSVP please contact the church office.

Blue Christmas Worship ServiceSunday, December 21st starting at 4 p.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church, 2800 West Jefferson Street Springfield, IL 62702. St. John's Lutheran Church along with the other surrounding ELCA churches are offering a "Blue Christmas" Worship Service. This service is for anyone who is hurting, whether it be because of the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a marriage. The service is low key and centered around music, prayers, scripture readings, short reflections, meditation, candle lighting, and communion. The hope of this service is to bring hope and comfort to all those in need.

BREAKFASTWITHSANTASt. John’s Global Missions Committee, in partnership with the Springfield Committee for Children, is hosting its first ever Breakfast with Santa Event on Saturday, December 6 from 9-11:30 a.m. in the Parish Life Center and Lobby. In addition to a delicious, homemade breakfast with Santa, the event will include pictures with Santa, a real live reindeer, Christmas crafts, the story of St. Nicholas, and more! Tickets are $10 per person or $5 for ages 3 and under, and are available in the church office and before and after worship services. All proceeds benefit the Springfield Committee for Children as they provide funding for extracurricular activities for children and youth in need around our community.

The Situation: In the last several months, the Ebola outbreak has claimed thousands of lives. The virus has spread rapidly, and with no approved vaccine and a high fatality rate, the World Health Organization is now calling it “one of the world’s most lethal diseases.” Ebola has spread to multiple countries, the hardest hit being Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. In addition to health care, one of the most urgent needs is food. As people in affected areas are quarantined to their homes, towns are being shut down to limit the spread of the virus and people are not able to work, harvest crops, or purchase food. The shipment of

food has also stopped because people from other countries fear contracting the virus. “We need food,” says the Rev. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, bishop of the

Lutheran Church in Liberia. “There is a saying now: ‘If we don’t die of

Ebola, we will die of starvation.’”

Our Response: Lutheran Disaster Response is committed to walking with our brothers and sisters affected by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Operating through our partners and companion churches, together we are: Supplying and shipping essential protective gear and supplies to protect medical workers at Phebe Hospital and Curran Lutheran Hospital in Liberia. Providing food assistance to the

Lutheran Church in Liberia and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sierra Leone. Raising awareness and providing sensitization messages on the symptoms and prevention methods of Ebola. Completing construction of an isolation center at Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing that meets World Health Organization standards.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and its predecessor church have walked with the people of Liberia for more than 150 years. Our long-standing relationship with our companions in Liberia and Sierra Leone provides a strong foundation to respond holistically to the needs of those who are suffering and living with the threat of Ebola. What Can You Do?

Pray: Pray for those affected or threatened by the virus that they may be granted healing and hope. Give: Your gifts designated for Ebola Outbreak Response will be used in full (100 percent) to assist those directly impacted by this crisis. Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree"Oh Christmas Tree! Oh Christmas Tree! Thy leaves are so unchanged..." Why are we singing O Christmas Tree? Because, "IT" will be here before you know it! What is "IT?" "IT" is the opportunity to help someone else have a blessed Christmas through buying gifts for one of the residents of United Cerebral Palsy. (you can pick up an individual's name and wish list starting November 29th and then return them back to the church wrapped no later than December 14) or donating mittens, gloves, hats, scarves and socks for people in need around our community. There will be Christmas trees (Mitten Trees) throughout the church where you will be able to drop off any new mittens, hats, or gloves. If you also have good used children's coats or boots, those are always needed too. You can also stop by the UCP table and pick up a name.

Thank YouA humungous THANK YOU to everyone who helped out by donating time, food, and money this past month to the St. John's Breadline for Breadline Sunday and to Grace Food Pantry for our Thanksgiving Food Drive. We have collected over 2,525 food items for Grace Food Pantry and money is still coming in for the St. John's Breadline. Once again you heard the call and acted upon it with generosity. It is for that reason there will be many who will have a hot meal this Thanksgiving. Thank you for letting the light of Christ shine through you!

Cross-Shaped Gift Ideas for ChristmasLooking for a way to give a gift in the shape of the cross this Christmas? Instead of stressing out at the mall trying to figure out what to buy for your loved ones, consider giving a gift in their honor to one of your favorite ministries, e.g. LSSI, Grace Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, ELCA World Hunger, St. John’s Youth, St. John’s Preschool Scholarship Fund, Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, etc. Another idea is to invite that hard-to-shop-for person on your list to join you in a service project serving others for the holidays, instead of the usual gift exchange. What better gift is there than spending time with a family member, friend, or co-worker serving those who are in need? Don’t stress! Give a cross-shaped gift this Christmas and see how good it feels!
