BIKE TOUR 2015 Tour de Alpine

Well we’re home! 43 students, 9 staff, 5 days, 322km, 2 states, 10 punctures, 1 stack! This year, we added a 4th Tour location, heading to the High Country in what we named “Tour de Alpine”. Wangaratta to Myrtleford, Bright, Mongans Bridge, Tallangatta and Albury. The Tour was simply amazing. The scenery was spectacular, the roads were excellent, we had hardly any traffic to contend with and we stayed in some beautiful locations. Some of the highlights were: the view from the top of Mt Buffalo and Tawonga gap (on the way to Mt Beauty), both of which were the rewards for two of the most significant hill climbs we have had on any Bike Tour; the food was

awesome (and plentiful), and the standard of slice along the way was fantastic; the countryside around the Hume Dam leading to Albury on our last day; and Mongans Bridge campsite positioned idyllically beside the Kiewa River. A few less flies would have been nice! The staff were really pleased with the way students embraced the Tour and op-erated as a group on what was a very tiring but rewarding week.

Glenn Unmack – on behalf of the Bike Tour Staff.

YEAR 7 ORIENTATION DAY Orientation is a fantastic day for staff at Newcomb Secondary College. We were looking forward to meeting our Class of 2016. It is an exciting day for Grade 6 students who meet many new faces and experience a taste of their new secondary school. This Year’s Orientation Day was a great success. Students started the day by meeting the College Principal, Mr Honeywell, in the Language Centre. They then worked with English and Indonesian staff until recess, meeting their class mates and learning their names. During recess students explored the school grounds and made new friends.

The next classes were Art and Technology where students participated in a selection of Drama, Metal, Food and Art. By the end of lunch students could confidently find their way around the school. The afternoon started with a focus on healthy living with a range of games organised by our Physical Education staff. It was then off to Maths and Science. Our busy day ended with a Year Level Assembly.

ORIENTATION DAY: IN THE CLASSROOM This morning, 71 and 72 spent time with their 2016 EASE teachers, getting to know each other with games and activities. 73 went to Indonesian before all three classes went to the library to complete a reading survey and questionnaire to give

their EASE teachers some ideas about our new students' skills, likes and interests. The students found their favourite book in the library and photocopied the cover, to display on their reader's notebooks. They are now all ready to start their reading program in 2016.

During much of period 4, you could hear a watch tick, such was the

concentration on the task of painting ‘Sponge Bob Santa’. 73 took

on the task of being a painter just like their expert Mr Davis. 73

were really accurate in their painting and super engaged in being

their best.

Students mixed secondary and tertiary colours as part of

painting their ‘Sponge Bob’ Christmas card. With assistance of

Mrs Mahr, Mrs Kestle and Mr Kellett once they settled into the

task they chatted quietly about their lives with new friends.

All ‘new Year 7 students’ arrived at the hall after lunch to

participate in a 50 minute Physical

Education session with Mr. Currie, Mr.

Unmack and Mr. George. Given the

temperature had risen to the mid 30’s,

the aim was to give students an insight into the core values of the schools Physical Education

program such as participation, enjoyment and teamwork rather than ask them to over-exert

themselves physically!! The 3 year 7 2016 classes were able to interact with other students

in a meaningful where they focussed upon strategy, ideas and co-operation in a series of

minor games such as ‘Sprouts’ and ‘Statues’. It was great to see that all students developed

their relationships with each other and staff alike and can now look forward to being a

participant in our program next year.

VCAL 2016 As part of our orientation program for year 10s heading into year 11 next year, our future VCAL students under-took an integrated project that required them to design, market, construct and cook a pizza. Six pizzas were pro-duced and judged and the winner was the 'Dibeatus' which was half dinner, half dessert. Well done guys.

Newcomb Secondary College is hosting a Bethany Giving Tree again this year to help support the annual appeal that helps families across Geelong. We ask you to please bring an unwrapped present to leave under our tree in the front entry to the office area. Bethany will collect these gifts and allocate them to suitable recipients who would otherwise miss out on a Christmas present.

The BayFM Bethany Giving Tree Appeal has been successfully spreading Christmas cheer for the past 15 years, col-lecting presents from generous individuals, businesses & community groups and distributing them to those in need via local welfare agencies across Geelong. This year the appeal will run from Friday 13 November and finish on Friday 11 December and we encourage people to leave their presents early so we can distribute to families in need before Christmas. So when you’re writing that list of what to buy for the family, add an extra name to your list and put a smile a child’s face this Christmas. Thank you and we hope you have a happy Christmas - from all at BayFM and Bethany. Source: http://www.bayfm.com.au/2015-10-23-02-19-30/bethany-giving-tree-appeal Giving Tree Appeal
