Our Active Culture…

Hororata Swimming Sports… After the success of 2015, the annual Hororata Swimming Sports will again be split between two venues this year on Friday 11 (PP14) March 2016. The programme once again be divided into two sections i.e., Recreation (Beginners) and Competitive. The Beginners section will be held at Greendale School utilising their smaller pool from 9.30 – 11.00am, after which we will return to Hororata for the Competitive section, from 11.30am onwards.

An entry form has been attached to this newsletter and is due back at school by Friday 4 March 2016. Students have the choice of a variety of strokes in both sections. The Under Water Plunge will be limited to c competitive swimmers, while the fun pool activities like walking, starfish etc will be limited to the recreation swimmers. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about their choice of events to ensure the maximum enjoyment and participation. A swimming programme, including rules, race times etc will be available to school families in the week leading up to this event.

Hororata Harriers… The Hororata Harriers will begin in full force next week, with a focus on preparing children for the upcoming local and regional multisport events. We are currently preparing for the upcoming Weet-Bix TRYathlon, Canterbury Triathlon, MacDonalds Duathlon and City 2 Surf fun run/walk. We welcome parents to run with the kids… many legs make light work! We will be running between 12.40 – 1.00pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (all ages).

Our Learning Culture…

Maths Buddy… As part of our strategy to provide remedial and enrichment opportunities for our young mathematicians we offered students and families access to Maths Buddy in 2015. This online resource was provided to all students at the school’s expense. Acknowledging the many issues that surround accessing online resources for families and the poor uptake, we have decided not to continue with this programme at a school level this year. Students and families however can continue to use the resource at their expense. We recommend all parents take the time to explore the resource at www.mathsbuddy.co.nz. This may well be your best spent 30 minutes in support of your child’s mathematics future.

Celebration Assembly... Every Friday afternoon from 1:50pm our school comes together for our School Assembly. Our Assemblies included values education, awards and presentations and performances from by our talented students.. all welcome. Twice a term we hold a Celebration Assembly, including presentations from all classes, special awards and an opportunity to celebrate the success we have achieved up to that point in the school year. Our first Celebration Assembly this year will be held on Friday 4 March, at 1:30pm… please come along a see a snap shot of what our awesome kids have been up to this year.

Finally, regular and enjoyable physical activity benefits everyone. It can improve physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being and, for New Zealand students and young people everywhere, it should be part of daily life. Schools, in particular, play a critical role in fostering young people’s physical activity, in teaching the skills and attitudes needed to participate, and in providing a safe venue for the activity to take place.

In the past few years our school has worked hard to develop an Active Culture whereby students and adults are encouraged to make active choices about how they use their recreation time. Our Active Culture is part of our special character and is promoted as our point of difference within the education community.

Once again our Active School Programme will be sponsored by Min Cookson and PGG Wrightsons. Min’s support, coupled with support from Canterbury Plains Water Limited (CPWL), KiwiSport funding provided by the Government and fundraising from the PTA allows us to provide Hororata students with a large array of activities, without hitting on parent pockets every week.

Thanks for supporting our school

Marty Gameson (Principal)

Ps. Has anyone seen our school bus which, was stolen on Thursday last week?

Piwakawaka (Yrs 0-2) Miss Raybould

Hi everyone.

Just a couple of things to help the day run smoothly. The children need to bring their book bag to school every day with their reading book and notebook inside it. Sometimes the children tell me “Mum took it out and didn’t put it back”, so I usually remind them that they come to school, not mum, so it is their job to do it.

Also, at the end of last year many children took their publishing folder home so they could take out last year’s stories. Please send this back to school empty so we can add our new stories.

Many thanks Julia

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all,

Well everything is well under way now. We are starting to put up some of our work on the walls so please come in and have a look at our amazing talent. We have officially started homework this week and already have at least two pictures up on our Homework Wall Of Fame!

We also have a making table in our class this year and are looking for small sized cardboard boxes so we have something to work with for our creations.

It has been great to catch up with so many of you over the last few days. If you haven’t been able to make a time please just drop in after school or send me an e-mail.

Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

Hello Everyone.

it is great to be back at school. Thank you to Mrs Baker for looking after Tui in my absence.

This week we have been busy re-establishing routines, homework was sent home on Monday along with spelling and reading books. Please encourage your child to read every night.

Swimming continues to happen every day – well done to the children who bring their togs every day.

Good luck to all those who are going to Canterbury Triathlon next week.

Cheers Jenni

BOARD OF TRUSTEES Thanks to Amanda for attending this week’s Board of Trustee meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 31 March 2016 so please mark it down in your calendar now. Reminder to visit www.trustee-election.co.nz because we need a great board of trustees to lead our great school. We need informed people from the parent and wider community with a balance of skills and experiences on our board to step forward. Potential trustees may be in the school parent community, or, in the wider community, but everyone needs information to make the choice to stand and noters need information to exercise their vote. If you can share your skills you can be a trustee. Step forward. Piki ake

Swimming Baths

Sir John Hall bequeathed a sum of money in 1907 for school baths.

An attempt to obtain Government subsidy in commemoration of the Coronation of King George V in 1911 was not successful. In the 1920’s further efforts were made and the funds raised.

The school baths were built and officially opened with a Carnival on 20 December 1924. The ladies wore their new regulation neck-to-knee costumes. Thereafter bathing was segregated with special hours and days for ladies and gentlemen. No record has been kept of when these rules were relaxed!

The water for filling the baths was obtained from a Council water race. The filters did not remove all the foreign matter hidden in the cloudy water, so one would swim with cockabullies' and tadpoles.

In November 1955, after using the services of local water diviners, a well was dug in the old horse paddock (is still there today although we do not have a horse paddock any more).

Many hours of voluntary hard labour were needed before the under-ground stream was reached at 30 feet.

Now we can bathe in sparkling clear water! And everyone looks at the daily temperature!

Keep your eye out for our next instalment!
