Welcome back to the boarders anda belated Happy Easter to you all.We are pleased to say that all ofchildren had fun on their holidaysand made it back to school safely.Unfortunately the same cannot besaid for the staff team! BothMaureen and Haydn sustainedinjuries during the holiday and as aresult neither have yet been able toreturn to Northbourne. We wishthem both a speedy recovery andkeenly await their return to school. In the absence of Maureen, Jennyand Jules will fully manage theboarders’ medication and First AiderJo Smith will be on hand during theschool day for both boarders andday children.

In other staff news, we are very pleased to announce a newmember of our team, Vicky Kent. Vicky joins us as a GraduateAssistant for this term and for the next school year and hasalready made a great impression on staff and pupils!

As always, boarding life has been non-stop since the childrenreturned. Last Thursday they quickly dropped back into theirdaily routine and lessons. We decided on Thursday evening toput the unpacking on hold and let the children enjoy the goodweather and one another's company and after three weeks ofseparation. It seems there was lots of catching up to do!

As the evenings are now lighter and we have made slightalterations to our supper time, the boarders have plenty oftime to play outside! In school we have seen the start of boththe rounders season (girls) and cricket season (boys), and, especially after the visit from the 11th Wicket cricket shop, these have been popular games.

At the weekend some of our senior boarders joined their peerson a Night Walk completing missions as they hiked fromSchool to Dover in the darkness. They had a great time hidingfrom 'guards', splashing through muddy puddles and slurpingon hard-earned hot chocolate when they reached theirdestination.

We followed this with a relaxed day on Sunday; playingoutside, gaming and watching movies. In the afternoon wewent to church for a very unusual service, an animal blessing, where members of the congregation were invited to bringalong their pets to be blessed. Very kindly the boarders wereable to 'adopt' some pets during the service as they weresitting amongst their classmates who had brought along theiranimals. We also took along Mocca the Girls' House hamsterand Obama the goldfish who lives in the Boys' House. Theservice was very enjoyable and perhaps unintentionallyentertaining with dogs howling to the hymns and yelping during the sermon!

All in all we're having a great start to the summer term and look forward to the next few weeks.

As ever, please do get in touch with the boarding team with any questions or queries.

1st XI Cricket vs Wellesley House (Home)

Thankfully, the sun made a marvellous and most welcome appearance to allow us to complete our first cricket match of theseason. The format of the game was 20 overs for each side but with a draw option included.

We won the toss and decided to bowl first, not really knowing how the pitch would play due to the damp conditions. BothPaddy Jackaman and Felix Dont both bowled with great accuracy and this limited the opposition to scoring barely 2 runs anover. They were both ably backed up by some consistent bowling from Joly Presland. As a team, we bowled and fielded verywell for our first outing and this was highlighted by the superb airborne catch that Ferdinand Plessix pulled off to dismiss theirkey batsman. We eventually bowled Wellesley all out on the very last ball of their innings, with them having amassed a total of81 runs.

The boys set about with instructions of chasing down this very achievable target, but alas too many ill-disciplined shots resultedin us falling short of Wellesley’s total. We eventually drew the match having scored 38 for 8. The lads must learn that you haveto play straight to deliveries that are on the stumps and not look to keep playing across the line. The fact that 7 of our dismissalswere a result of being bowled, suggests that our shot selection wasn’t as disciplined as it should have been.

Quality practise is the key ingredient for us to improve, so get out there and perfect those straight drives!

Colt’s Cricket v Wellesley (Away)

The first match in a cricket season is always difficult and expectations are best described as ‘realistic’. It was a pleasant surprise, then, to see so much go right.

On a beautiful afternoon, Wellesley opted to bat. They have a number of very competent batsmen, especially their openingpair. Charlie Scholfield and Roshan Aiyagari bowled well enough to keep the score down to 40 off the first 8 overs and then JackShipton dismissed their number one. The next Wellesley pair piled on the runs when our weaker bowlers came on but we keptour discipline and manage to get a run out and Patrick Davies got the wicket of their number 5. Wellesley finished on 153 for 3.If we had been a little more aggressive in our fielding, especially in our catching, we could have knocked 30 runs off that.

Charlie and Roshan opened the batting and kept the Wellesley bowlers at bay for 8 overs when Charlie was bowled. Our nextbatsmen decided to lose their heads and 3 run outs later we were in a bit of trouble. But cometh the hour, cometh the man andin came Thomas Mead who not only stayed in for 12 overs but hit 9 fours in his total of 37. Marcus Yanni made a decentcontribution as did Roshan; Jack Shipton and Oliver Martin saw out the remaining overs. We finished on 110 for 6. MatchDrawn.

ROUNDERS

Wednesday 30th April 2014

U13 Rounders v Wellesley House (Away)

The first match of the rounders season was quite a wake up call for our team. Wellesley were very strong in the field and hadsome very good batters. If our girls failed to make contact with the ball when batting they were regularly stumped out at firstbase. In the second half our team were all out before the end of the innings. We misfielded the ball a number of times in thedeep allowing Wellesley to score freely. The most positive aspect of the match for Northbourne was Carla’s excellent battingand some very good link play between her and Honor in the field.

The final score was 21 – 6 to Wellesley.

Rounders is a relatively simple sport that involves throwing, catching and hitting a small ball. Without these basic skills wecannot hope to compete effectively in matches and at the moment they are sadly lacking. The girls must spend more of theirfree time practising and improving the accuracy and strength of their overarm throws and get used to catching and stoppingthe harder ball if they are to develop as players.

Player of the Match - Carla Ruiz de la Prada

U11 A Rounders v Wellesley House (Away)

The game began with NPS batting and though the intention was there, unfortunately we were not getting big hits and theWellesley girls were able to field the ball quickly and prevent us from reaching 2nd base. Their backstop to 2nd base passeswere precise and accurate, as were ours, but this prevented us passing 1st base on a number of occasions. We alsotook some risks in an attempt to push for the ball and got stumped out unnecessarily. Most of our points for this >

Sports Newsinnings came from no balls but it is fair to say the girls were putting in a lot of effort.

We then changed positions and were fielding the Wellesley House balls. The Wellesley girls were making more contact with theballs than we had managed and kept our fielders on their toes. Some inexperience in our team led to a couple of poor throwsand fielding decisions at times, however, there were some moments of lovely, controlled fielding as well as direct catchestaking out several of Wellesley’s batters. At the halfway point the score was 3.5 to NPS- 6 to WH.

In our second innings our play was noticeably improved with Harriet starting us of strongly scoring a full rounder from a strongball. Maria soon followed suit with a second full rounder. This prompted the girls to push harder for points but unfortunatelythis lead to many of our team being stumped out! The effort and the willing to score was there, we now need to improve onthe judgement and decision making required to take those risks. Harriet went on score a second rounder, judging theopposition’s fielding well. In this innings we scored 5 rounders, a clear improvement.

However, the Wellesley girls also improved during their second innings scoring 7.5 rounders. Credit must be given here to EvieJackaman who played very well as backstop sending strong, clean passed to both bowler and 2nd base and thus preventingfurther half rounders being scored.

Final score 8.5 to NPS, 14 to Wellesley House.

Player of the match Harriet Balfour but well done to the whole team on a promising first game.
